I received my 1/200 Yamato on Friday. My hands are over-flowing with "I can't wait to get past the manual-reading part"...smiles. And...this book has been in my hands for about a week now. LOVE it.

Thank you for providing valuable information on both of these ships. I built Tamiya 1/350 years ago, before the release of 78025. I plan on building these magnificent ships again.

Awesome book mate. When I was in the Navy, I would take Janes World of Warships to my rack for the first few nights at sea. Now they are amazing books. Especially the newest editions. If only they werent so expensive.

Great tutorial as usual Nigel. My last visit to Japan I visited the Yamato Museum and I must say it was worth the visit. Apparently the blueprints were done on wax paper and after the war they found some of the drawings which are in the Museum. There is also a 1/10 scale model of the ship which you can walk round and look down on. I was told they had to sale the model up the river to the Museum. There is a spare searchlights of the yamato there which is so interesting. If you get a chance to visit Jaoan it is worth a look

Excellent book Nigel and a definite must for my Tamiya Yamato build.

To quote my late grandfather who was an Admiralty Inspector, (Warspite was one of his), what left the shipyard often bore little resemblance to what they started to build. By and large the drawings were a general guide and circumstances at the time shaped the final product.

Thank you so much Nigel, Anyone planning to build Yamato really must have this book. The images drawing and information is really the best you will find anywhere. I am jumping online and ordering mine today. Again, thanks Nigel your the best. 👍

You are very welcome Peter. I have since seen the book in the UK for around £22 now. I have just noticed that the single float Bi-plane on the stern of your mammoth was referred to as "Pete". The double float monoplane was referred to as "Jake".

I own this, and Janusz Skulski's previous book on Yamato, I actually pre ordered this in 2016, and received it in May, or March 2017. I own Tamiya's 1/350 scale Musashi, and have Fujimi's 1/700 Next Yamato, as well as Aoshima's 1/700 Yamato. I have been aware that Pontos's 1/700 Yamato, and seems the least wastefull, since you don't have to sand a lot of the detail off just to put any photo etch metal parts on. Stefan Draminski has done a supurb job on the cg renderings. I also have a few other books on both of them, such as two Steve Wiper's books, from Warship Pictorial series, and his Shipcraft book as well. I also have Model Art's Super Illustration on Yamato, and have Carlo Cestra's book on Musashi from the Polish publication, Kagero, from their Super Drawing's in 3D series, however, it would seem he used Janusz's first book, and also didn't seem to watch the livestream of Musashi's discovery, and is pretty outdated. However it is still a nice edition to my collection. I also have Intrepid Aviators, the author's father was an aviator on Intrepid, who helped sink Musashi. I also own Akira Yoshimura's Build The Musashi, and a book about Yamato's half sistership, Shinano: The Sinking of Japan's Secret Supership. Sorry for being long winded, this is a great review. Take care, and all the best.

Hi Nigel are you going to pick up this monster of kit? I just built the Moebius 2001 Discovery XD-1 my biggest kit to date. I know for sure I would not attempt this kit, but I look forward to watching someone build it. From watching you build the Lancaster kit I believe you would really do this kit justice! Thanks for sharing this video.

The chequer plate on the bow and aircraft deck were to provide grip in the wet on what would otherwise be a very slippery surface. I believe that the USN used a high grip painted coating on their ships instead like you'd see on an aircraft carrier deck today.
@NigelsModellingBench2 жыл бұрын
I guessed that was what the chequer plate was for, but each bar of "Chequer plate" must be 4 feet long??
@jdmodels19682 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench Ah sorry, misunderstood. I did build the 1/350 Yukikaze a few years ago and the chequer plate was very pronounced on that as well so perhaps it was a Japanese thing to have the large bars...

A great review and very timely as my 1/200 Yamato arrives next week. I'd just recently finished building the Tamiya 1/350 Premium edition when I watched a review on the 1/200 - and inevitably my resistance crumbled within moments. Anyway, your review has convinced me that this book will be very handy for the 1/200 build. Just one comment, and you may have already discovered this yourself after recording the review, regarding your brief confusion over the rocket launchers on page 246 - around the 15:22 mark in the video. The description at the top of that page explains that they are indeed rocket launchers, but only fitted to the Musashi. Again, you may have already realised this yourself, so apologies if that's the case.

Yes I think the diamond plate (that's what they called it) is out of scale . where I used to work at Newport News ship building in Virginia USA. water blasting military ships they had the diamond plate on some of the decks it was only an inch by an inch in diameter it looked like little X 's it was there for non-slip purposes. I've seen it on other plastic model ships 1/350 scale and I thought it was way out of scale I don't know if they make photo etch parts to replace it or not I hope they do. how did your 24th scale Hellcat come out it was looking pretty good the last time I seen it . nice job on that so far and all of your other modeling projects. I'm planning on getting the 200 scale Yamoto I already have the 200 scale Iowa I hope they come out with a 200 scale Essex class . the Lexington CV 16 I hope you build the 200 scale Yamamoto so I can get some good tips from you you're a great model builder thanks for all of your videos they've helped me and I would imagine others a lot thank you and have a great day and be safe⚓

It's great book, I have it as well as the ones for the Bismark and the Iowa. There is one for the Hood as well but it is, as far as I know, a much earlier book and is a much smaller paperback, I wish they'd update it to the same standard as this one...
@NigelsModellingBench2 жыл бұрын
I have Bismarck, Scharnhorst, Iowa and this one, along with the old Hood. As you say, the old blue books are much thinner than these but are still bloody good modellers aids.
@jdmodels19682 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench I may pick up the Scharnhorst book if I get the 1/200 kit but as I already have a 1/200 Iowa, Hornet and Hood (I finally got my hands on the Pontos set to go with the extra fret and the resin funnel you sent me last year) it may be a while before I get another 200 scale ship although I have to say, I'm struggling to think of a reason not to get the Yamato...
@NigelsModellingBench2 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to help you NOT get the Yamato here... it is on Ebay for £288 in Germany plus £15 shipping. You may or may not get VAT on top of that?? Search "Glow2b 1/200" Ebay will show you a load of glow plugs, but at the top of the page it will say, in blue, "search for Glow2b instead" Click that and you will see cheap Yamato!!
@jdmodels19682 жыл бұрын
@@NigelsModellingBench Thanks a lot, that's a great help. 😂 I've seen it on 1001hobbies site for 415 including postage which I though was a pretty good deal but even allowing for VAT that looks like it might be slightly cheaper. Of course the inevitable KA/MK1/Pontos set will likely be another £300+ on top of that, starting to make the Border Lancaster look cheap.
