The more I listen to Yuja Wang, the more I'm awed by her. She's both a master world class pianist and a force of nature. To me, Yuja Wang is the most exciting classical pianist performing today. She's brilliant in both her technical proficiency, as well as expressive, creative interpretations. She's also obviously charming, charismatic, with sincere respect for her music and the great composers she admires. At 68 years of age, I've heard a lot of great musicians. To me, Yuja Wang has an intangible quality that breaks down all the cultural barriers, unifies people, world wide, and touches our hearts and souls. She's my favorite, all time! Bravo, Ms. Wang, Bravo, indeed! Blessings always to Yuja Wang and her family.

Yuja Wang just amazes me more and more each time I hear her. This is IMHO the best performance of this concerto I've heard. The tempi are spot on and the music is expressive throughout the entire work. Her fingerwork and articulation are dazzling and each note is played with crystalline purity. I love her facial and vocal expressions as well - she is clearly feeling the music as part of her and not just as another gig - she is loving every minute. And kudos to the orchestra as well under Maestro Masur's inspired direction - he knows Mendelssohn's music inside out as he was the director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig which has a great Mendelssohn tradition as he himself was the orchestra's founder.

I admire so many of the extraordinarily fine pianists we have the privilege of hearing today. It is a great time to be alive to hear such wonderful artists, and I have several special favorites. BUT, Yuja Wang is sui generis. She is simply off by herself in her own class. The precision of her technique is so often praised ( someone once said it is "frightening ). She plays with such passion. However, I think it is the "clarity" of her playing that is enchanting. There is no muddiness here, which you find somewhere in the playing of everyone else. Therefore, you have the feeling that, no matter how complex the music, you are hearing it all, hearing everything that is there - Yuja hears it, and therefore, so do you.

Bravo Yuja, this concerto is really a war horse in your repertoire!
@christophmuller900910 жыл бұрын
***** Schon gut.
@PeterFritzWalter10 жыл бұрын

"Leaving the orchestra in the dust" reminds me of the great racehorse Secretariat in his 1973 win of the Triple Crown, in which he outran the pack and kept speeding up so that he was ahead by 34 lengths when he crossed the finish line! So Ms Wang outpaces the orchestral pack because her artistic destiny is to express her inner energy and vision of this concerto, not just to limp along with the orchestral pack! It is a glimpse into the future of how reality will be experienced by humans , with greater energy, greater talent and capacities, and we see this glimpse into the future with Ms Wangs performance. 500 years from now artists will consider Yuja Wang a fore- runner of the class of pianistic talents that will be considered normal and constant. By the way, no great race horse has as yet broken Secretariats world record for the New York Triple Crown race in Saratoga and it still stands on its divine pedestal 38 years later (from 1973 win). These "personages" are the future showing up in our present to highlight the way to our eventual divine destiny.

yes, I also find him as good or at least as comparable as other romantic composers. Although, he was very popular in his time. Liszt was also a great admirer of Mendelssohn. I think one of the (probably) many reasons that he isn't as regarded as all other composers might has to do with Chopin's popularity. Liszt was as well known as Chopin back in the day but on this day not as much of course. So did that happen to Mendelssohn's fame to this day. Same thing happened to Schubert, only Schubert wasn't even popular in his time. (Sorry for a not so good English vocabulary, I'm still working on my grammer, so writing something detailed is hell for me LOL)

@Sahasrarasmi-Sancodite Жыл бұрын
Yes, Yuja Wang is a true "enigma" in terms of emotional artistic expression Allied to an almost "robotic/AI" technique pianists consider virtuosity. See my comment up above where I consider Yuja to be an earthly manifestation of a "LILA AVATAR", an "expression" of the Divine Krishna the Supreme Personality of the Godhead, who manifests in various human personalities to teach us Something, which we can only discern as time evolves and passes on in our lives. WHAT message a Lila Avatar is bringing in this century as an expression Known as Yuja Wang remains to be found out and understood!

Another note on tempo differences. There is a recent KZbin interview with Yuja were she talks about her father who is a percussionist from Beijing. She explains how he was very particular about her rhythm during her early days. In this opening of this performance I believe that the orchestra slowed either under the direction of Kurt or on its own. Yuja maintains her rock solid tempo thus they are out of sync for a few phrases until Kurt gave a verbal instruction. I don't sense Yuja slowing one bit until the second theme. The piano is a percussion instrument and I think Yuja embraces it as such which is why this performance sparkles like the sun on fresh fallen snow.
@johnsterman772 жыл бұрын
I think Mazur was actually telling Yuja to slow down, not the orchestra.
@johnsterman772 жыл бұрын
I think not. Mazur could hardly be telling the orchestra to speed up. If it had slowed, it would have been under his direction n the first place. No, his exhortation was directed at Yuja, who was simply running away solo.

@@stanleyshelmire Well, I suppose we’ll never know, but I think the odds of twenty-five musicians spontaneously slowing down, or Mazur’s allowing them to do so (versus Yuja’s getting a little over-excited and speeding up) are pretty slim. And no one loves her any more than I do. Cheers!

Yuja is a surprising mix as an artist. Technique brilliant. Attack exact almost all of the time. Great delicacy in lyrical passages. Sometimes too much oomph in others. She has a lot to offer us lesser mortals even now. She'll be intriguing to watch as she matures, so long as she doesn't burn out. Pace yourself Yuja. Thank you for this. Cathy

All you have to hear her play is the first solo passage, and you know this is a definitive performance. Her playing is magnificent, nearly perfect. Her tempos are perfect (unlike Masur's, who drags them to irritating effect during the orchestra's first exposition of the main subject), and her touch is incomparable. I'll be watching this many, many times over. Thanks so much for posting this.

Listened to Yuja again today. Best performance of a concerto I have watched and listened! There is this deity of youth energy in it, alive, pure, sublime, full of adrenaline, with uttermost ease and splendor. Played organically fast and fearless in force, the youth orchestra kept up amazingly well with Yuja. Was't Mendelssonhn in his prime youth when he wrote this piece? Everything is right in place, even the brief shout of Masur seemed just add a flavor in it and did not affect the totality of the piece. Finally, kudos and RIP to master Masur. ...Definitely a keeper for ages.
@creandoCOSASdiy3 жыл бұрын
The brief shout you mention, i always had this doubt. It was for the orchestra? Or it was for yuja? They lost synchronization for some seconds, but im not sure who is to blame there. The soloist? The concertmaster? Anyway this is by far my favorite performance and favorite concerto. You cant play better than this

If by "in his prime youth" you mean "not yet the Mendelssohn who wrote religious kitsch like Elijah" (yeah, I said it), then yes, he was in his prime when he wrote this (1830-31, when he was about 21). But I think only the first movement of this concerto is great. The third reminds me of whipped cream.

Estoy harto de esta especie de suprema islas en música clásica, que solo consideran que una composición es de gran calidad cuando aburre a las ovejas.

I have indeed. To me, they are not his best works. Still excellent, though, being Mendelssohn, after all. ;) Like other great composers, he never actually wrote anything less than great. However, I particularly like his concertos (his Violin Concerto is the best ever written, imo), symphonies (his fourth and first in particular), his Paulus (simply divine!), and his late organ sonatas.

A wonderful concert with such joy and spirit, made ever more possible with the impeccable clarity and decisive lyrism! The notes were just dancing on and bouncing off the keyboard!! Another thing I notice about Yuja from watching many of her performances is how relaxed her body is when she plays and that really carries her playing a long way. It seems kinesthetically she plays from her core, engaging back muscles rather than just relying solely on the arms and hands. Just watch another pianist playing the same piece and I saw how the tensed muscles cut her phrasing short and flattened the tone produced.

Everytime I watch this performance, she connects with my brain... mesmerising. Imagine what a vivacious young man Mendelssohn must have been to compose this at age 24. He must have been bursting with youthful vigour and intensity. He died at only 38.

Please never take Yuja's pianistry for granted! One day you will see that her best performances, as this one of a Mendelssohn jewel with the great Kurt Masur is a World Première in its own kind, for all pianists who played this before totally missed the point. And then please you ask me how a Chinese pianist could play this so well while it's composed by a German Jew, who was not loved at his time because of his Jewish heritage, and we are in the field, we are in the zone, as it's said in sports. Yuga is a genius, and she represents for me the Genius of China. There will never be no second Yuja Wang, for her personality is transcending China and embraces, deeply embraces Western culture as well, and here especially German, European, and American musical culture. I love you, Yuja, even though you do not respond to my emails. I love you as my Goddess! For that's what you are. And you need to be worshipped!
