Hey, thanks for the video, I just got mine earlier this week and I love It. I love how you set everything up, obviously I know you have a lot of practice with customizing devices and android devices which i personally don’t, I’m still quite the noob. Im curious how did you change the theme/appearance for Daijisho from the default? It’s a darker theme that looks so great. Also when you were going through Retroarch, the background was like a reddish black color. How did you get that on there? Just curious how to change those things and what the themes are called. As you said, you got It looking “all pretty” and after spending $200 on this one compared to under $80 for a Miyoo or 35XX, I obviously want to make this device as clean and awesome as possible. Hopefully you see my question, thanks in advance!

Hi Russ, great review as always. I am some kind of a product designer myself, and i can assure you that Anbernic doesn't make inline shoulder buttons in order to make the device more pocketable. This way is much more cost effective and they want to maximize their profit while keeping the price tag as affordable as it can get. And i want to tell that nothing wrong with that, i just wanted to emphasize their true intentions about this matter.

First of all thank you so much for all the work you put in your videos. If you don’t mind, I would like I would like to share my complete dilemma over which (first) handheld to get. I am mainly and purely looking to play retro (RPGs/Platformers) games for consoles such as the Nintendo NES/SNES/64, Sega Mega Drive/Genesis/Game Gear, GB/GBC/GBA. Not exactly interested in anything 3D really so PS, Wii, Switch, 3DS aren’t necessarily what I want, but would be a slight “plus”. I am really confused with all the screen aspect ratios when deciding which is best for my needs. If I had to choose two main consoles it would be the SNES and Gameboy (color and advance). So far I am considering (my pros/cons): RG405M - not psyched about the screen density/lack of HDMI out. I heard GarlicOS may be coming to the 405M which is fantastic and a huge plus for me RG552 - may be too big/heavy but love both the screen and having HDMI out RP3+ - leaning towards this one the most atm but it may not be supported when GarlicOS comes out for the 405M. I am really torn on this one I would really appreciate any input you can throw my way. Thank you again.
@RetroGameCorps Жыл бұрын
Hi Halsten, thanks for the support! In regards to your question, that's a tough one. The RP3+ or the Retroid Pocket Flip might be the best fit, its video out capability is great and will comfortably play your primary systems plus quite a few bonuses. Plus the higher resolution screen will give you more room to work with when it comes to accurately scaling pixel systems. The RG552 unfortunately isn't a great first handheld -- the battery life, diminishing community support, and lack of performance power only really makes it a good fit for diehard 16-bit-eta enthusiasts at this point.

@joshuasuarez2370 I mean, the Retroid Pocket 3+ can do it for a bit cheaper ($150) but is a little hit and miss on some games, and requires tinkering with settings to get working well. I have one, and it does work for Melee, but I had to fiddle with settings a bit. The good news is that it can use Bluetooth controllers and the HDMI out to play with family - it's a good time! This device is a little more expensive, partly due to the metal shell if that matters for you, but same chip and generally same performance as the cheaper RP3+. If you want decently good performance without the tinkering for Gamecube, the Ayn Odin Lite will probably just work out of the box, with a bigger screen/size, at $199. Hope that helps! I had a Retroid Pocket 2 and wasn't really happy with the device. The d-pad made my thumb sore after a while, and I didn't enjoy playing N64 games (which was the reason I had got it) without c-buttons. I thought the digital slider would have worked. The ZL button broke, and the joystick drifted, so I figured I'd wait and get a handheld that could do N64 no problem. When the 3 came out and it was close to doing GameCube, I figured I'd wait. I ended up with the 3+. The D-pad and buttons are fine but not perfect. Seeing this makes me want to try an Anbernic device. And now I understand the collectors. No device is perfect, and you keep wanting to get something that has one thing you like or does better than your other device(s), or has a different size. Like the 3+ with grip fits fine in my jacket pocket. What will I do when the summer comes? Get an Anbernic? Lol. I've been waiting for this video to come out and I'm really glad I did. This video convinced me to wait. I love my RP2+ and it' the perfect size for me, but would like a bigger screen with a more powerful chipset. I was hoping this was it, but I guess I'll keep waiting.

3:55 I really like how you show the portability factor by displaying it on hand, getting it in and out of pocket etc, the only missing part was comparing it to a phone and maybe other common devices like a Nintendo Switch, etc.

Good stuff. The 4:3 aspect ratio is nice but maybe the 405M's biggest shortcoming is that, as Russ mentioned, both the RP3+ and the Odin Lite are more vfm. The RG353M on a discount on the other hand would be very tempting to me.

My modded PS Vita 2K model is my favorite dedicated gaming device of all-time. It contains many of my all-time favorite games... Final Fantasy VII Tekken 3 Ridge Racer (PSP) Final Fantasy X Sonic the Hedgehog 1 & 2 Super Mario World Super Mario All-Stars Super Mario Kart Street Fighter II: Turbo Mortal Kombat II Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, & 3 God of War I & II I got my Vita second-hand back in May 13, 2017 and battery life hasn't degraded much if at all! I love that it's smaller and lighter than my Switch Lite. I put my music and some movies on it. Vita is the GOAT to me. Then Switch Lite. But I'll eventually get a Steam Deck. It lacks the personality of the Switch though. Valve doesn't release its own exclusive games like Sony and Nintendo do. I hope Russ releases more Steam Deck videos. Like what are his dislikes about it? What are his favorite games he's playing from it? What are his daily carries?

This video along with all of your others have helped me determine that the pocket 3+ is what I am going to order. You point out so many things that I did not think of. I was really considering a 4:3 for retro gaming but I'm realizing I want to do more with my device than I thought. The pocket 3+ seems to be the most versitile device for the money right now.

This one should be, it’s definitely their best unless you specifically want to focus on 8 and 16 bit games. If that is the case then look up last years m device 353m However I wouldn’t get a ambernic device at all. The retroid devices are just superior at this point

Same, and those “similar handhelds” in my cases included Nintendo Switch and Analogue Pocket. The 405M has a better form factor than the Switch, and better 32-bit gaming support than the Pocket. Additionally, the Pocket doesn’t have Bluetooth support (for headphones), which is super annoying as good quality wired earbuds are really hard to find.

The lack of dual boot is the deal breaker for me. Between my RG351v and Steam Deck I've become very accustomed to having a little more flex and choice in operating system and front end. Android certainly comes with its own advantages, and at one point I DID want an Android-based device, but I've ultimately decided it's not something I'm interested in right now. If I'm buying a device today, it's probably still the 353m.

Great video as always Russ. I am not getting this as I have the Retroid Pocket Flip pre-ordered and intend to make that my pocketable/portable android retro device. I have a video topic suggestion for you that I don't think has been covered. What do you recommend in terms of save game backups and transfer between devices? I am going to fully transition to the Steam Deck for retrogaming but when I can't take it with me or if the battery dies I plan to use the Pocket Flip because of its portability and battery life (compared to Miyoo Mini). I think that since EmuDeck uses retroarch and Emulation Station that I should be ok as long as I use the same method on the Pocket Flip (except substituting Daijisho for the Emulation Station frontend since it isn't on the Play store). I heard that retroarch on the Steam Deck makes use of cloud saves as well so that is encouraging.

I've been waiting for this one all week! Your videos helped me decide on my trusty 351M as an intro machine last year but I've noticed my eye wandering to things that might be able to run Dreamcast and maybe PS2 better. Haven't watched the review yet though, but fingers crossed :)
@davekidd9719 Жыл бұрын
Nice. Scored +5 at the end. Had hoped for better PS2 performance but I'm happy to tinker to get the couple of games I really want to play going. PS1 and Dreamcast are my real love though and it's the spotty Dreamcast performance on my 351M that I want an upgrade for (the bigger screen is definitelya bonus though ;p)

I recently got my 353m (love it!) after watching this review. I really like the look of this device, the screen is a decent upgrade for my degrading vision lol. But I don't know if I'm ready for an Android only experience. I've become spoiled by how streamlined the batocera interface is. I know Android can run all these systems and more, sometimes better, but it just seems so clunky in comparison. Even on my rg552 I typically run Linux. If that had the option to reboot into Android I might use it a little more often but having to eject the sd card is a headache
