Frequently Asked Questions Thank you to the 98% of you who are so kind, funny, and respectful. You all are so awesome! Thank you so much for supporting the channel! We encourage nice/respectful comments. Disrespectful comments will be removed (either by me or KZbin). Yes, KZbin often gets to those before I do (for instance, the comment that addressed us as monkeys and our children as hybrids. A comment like that obviously goes against KZbin's policies. 1. We are aware of how red hair is inherited. The question about where the red hair comes from is not ours but the numerous people who stop and ask us this on a regular basis (almost daily). genetics.thetech.org/ask-a-geneticist/what-are-my-chances-having-red-haired-child 2. Is red hair really that rare? What about Black people with red hair? Yes. Red hair is the rarest hair color in the world. Worldwide, red hair only represents 1-2% of the entire population (regardless of race). There is very limited data regarding Black people with red hair. However, limited studies have shown red hair is not common in Africa as the environment historically required dark hair/dark skin. Remember, the gene for dark hair is dominant, whereas the gene for lighter color hair is recessive. The majority of Black Americans are mixed with up to 25% European ancestry. genetics.thetech.org/ask/ask67 3. Does our daughter with red hair have albinism? No. I think children with albinism are absolutely adorable. Our daughter, however, does not have albinism. Her doctor did check her for this. Her grandfather and great uncle also do not have albinism. There are many forms of albinism, and some people with albinism do have red hair. However, that is not where our family members got red hair. medlineplus.gov/genetics/condition/oculocutaneous-albinism/ 4. Why do we call ourselves Black and not mixed when we have mixed ancestry? I think being mixed or biracial is cool! If one of my parents was of another race, for sure I would call myself mixed. However, my closest ancestor of full European descent was 4-6 generations ago (during the slavery era). My foremothers and fathers have been labeled as Black/Negro since before the end of slavery. About 14% of the US population identifies as Black (over 48 million people). The average Black American has up to 25% European ancestry (just like me). It is unreasonable to suggest that roughly 85% of Black Americans (about 40 mill people) should reclassify themselves as mixed instead of Black due to their mixed ancestry that may be from hundreds of years ago. In addition, how would you assign a cut off? How much mixed ancestry would a person need to be considered mixed? How will you determine this? Will you require every American to take a DNA test? See my point? Studies also have shown that European Americans with up to 27% of African DNA still call themselves white and not mixed. Remember also that race is a social construct and not a biological one. www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/jefferson/mixed/onedrop.html www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/genetic-study-reveals-surprising-ancestry-many-americans 5. Were Black people really slaves? Perhaps free blacks married free whites and produced children out of love. It is possible but less likely. Studies have used DNA tests to trace American ancestry and migration (for instance, migrating from the South to the North). While the average African American has about 25% European ancestry, only 4% of European Americans show African ancestry (1% African ancestry or higher). That's a significant difference and indicates that there wasn't a lot of consensual mixing back then as some would suggest. I'm so glad things are different now! I believe we are all God's creation and are beautifully made! In the study discussed in the article listed below, researchers were able to track how many of a person's (of African or Native descent) ancestors were male versus female. They discovered that European ancestors tended to be male while African and Native American ancestors tended to be female (i.e. in most cases, the relationship was white male and African woman or white male and Native woman). www.sciencemag.org/news/2014/12/genetic-study-reveals-surprising-ancestry-many-americans 6. Do you favor one child over the other based upon hair color/skin color? Ridiculous. We obviously love all of our children and do whatever we can to give them the best opportunities. 7. Why do you use your children to get attention? Another funny question lol. We are well established in our careers and our lives and definitely don't "use" our children nor do we have to. There are thousands of families on KZbin who share their family lives with the world. Remember also that every family is different. You have a right to decide what is acceptable for your family, and we have the right to decide what is good for our family. 8. Were there Irish and Scottish slaveowners in America? Yes. Many historians have shown there were indeed Irish and Scottish slaveowners in America. I'm also aware that some Scottish/Irish came over as indentured servants. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKiwpZ6qbtqpi9E kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZpvNlmxjerulmbs kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKq5iIGnnbR2fKc 9. Do we think Vlad inherited his Eastern European/Russian ancestry from slavery? NO! In fact, we believe he inherited that ancestry from his father well after slavery. We are on a journey to discover more about his real grandfather. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqrcmqipqaqEh7s Trish's Ancestry DNA results: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmbOcmtunZKdoZY Vlad's Ancestry DNA results: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmbOcmtunZKdoZY Payton's Ancestry DNA results: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d2PSan5obK6Irtk Trish's dad's ancestry results: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpqYn5ehhqmUhdE Ancestry Playlist: kzbin.info/aero/PLX38ShvQ65LgtaMxJDavopJk-1qxq7Epr

Red-haired, Irish American here. A lot of people don't realize that if a child has red hair, they have to inherit the gene from *both* sides (both parents), as you mentioned. You guys both have large percentages of ancestry from countries with sizable redhead populations (Ireland, Scotland, Russia, Poland). Of course, red hair is found in populations all over the globe (incl China), as you now know. You will almost always be different than everyone else in the room as a redhead (no matter your skin color). It really does impact how you develop your personality & approach to others. Your daughter is a beautiful little girl with gorgeous, amazing hair! She'll be a credit to "our kind"!😉💓 *Red hair Power!!*

@UC1KvIFoJjqZ_n8J39mqTRtA sorry, I wasn't making light of your heritage, but many don't realize that. I thought the same thing also, many years ago, until I was disenchanted by a close friend of mine. We were talking about slavery and I made a comment about his family being slaves, and he straight out told me, that even though his family was here before the civil war, his family had never been slaves. I was actually put back on that, because I knew him well enough that I knew he wasn't lying to me. He actually told me to do my research into the history of American slavery, and that's when I found out that schools had been lying to people for decades. I learned about the civil war in the 1970's and 1980's, so I thought I knew about it. So, when I got a chance, I started doing my own research into what my friend had told me, and became disillusioned with what the schools had been teaching me and others. So, I apologize for any slight that I may have given to you and your family. One other thing, don't let your little darling change her hair color. She's going to grow up to be a heart breaker, just the way she is. I'm surprised that she doesn't have green eyes also, because the few ladies I've seen, with dark skin and red hair, have had emerald green eyes. But she is a beautiful young lady, and she will light up any room she walks into with that smile.

This same misconception about red hair happens even with two white parents. My husband and I both have brown hair and out of 5 kids only our youngest, the only one we share together, has red hair. Everyone always looks at him then side eyes me asking where he got it. I’m like, seriously? We both have red heads in our family and it just came out with only one kid. They act like red hair is some smoking gun or something. No, it’s called genetic roulette.

As a child, I attended a church where one of the members, a black woman (who had attended this church since her childhood), had freckles and auburn hair; a beautiful deep, obviously, red color (this was her natural hair color). - Her eyebrows, her eyelashes, her hair - all auburn in color. - When she got married, she married a black man, with brown eyes, and of medium brown complexion. - When they had their first baby, a little boy, the little boy was very pale (at about 2 years-old, he was still at least a shade lighter than his mother) and had red hair. - This woman was/is the only person who I have EVER met, black or white, that had natural auburn hair.

My brother had gorgeous, natural auburn hair, freckles, and fawn colored eyes. My kids' Grandma on their Dad's side had natural Auburn hair and hazel eyes, until her hair turned gray. She will be 100 years old soon. My Maternal side are almost all blue eyed, strawberry blonde or auburn haired. My hair was what they used to call "Dishwater Blonde". Not very pretty.. So, I started coloring my hair when I was 12 and in 7th grade. My Mom and Granny were thrilled. I used to hear them say, "Thank goodness for Clairol" throughout my childhood. My Dad and his family were 100% Ashkenazi Jewish, black haired, black eyed, with Olive skin. Out of 15 first cousins on his side, I am the only one with blue eyes. My Dad was the only one of his siblings to leave the East Coast and marry a Gentile in Los Angeles, CA. On my Mom's side I am a 4th generation Southern Californian. Her family has been in America since before 1600. I am a 1st generation Southern Californian and a 3rd Generation American on my Dad's side. Both sides came to America to escape religious persecution. Both the Jews and the Protestants were chased, killed, had their homes, property, and anything they owned stolen or destroyed.

I will never, ever, EVER understand why redheads always have such a bad reputation. It's like the more rare and unique the trait, the more it is frowned upon. Even as a child, I was always enamored with red hair- and I've never grown out of it. It still stops me in my tracks for a second and I just have to take it in. I have a lot of red and light brown streaks in my hair, but I would never be able to call myself a true redhead like this gorgeous little beauty. I guess people forget that the cradle civilization is in the heart of Africa, soooooo what do people expect? We (melanin people) produce every kind of traits under the sun. She was chosen to reflect the amazing powers that we have as a people, and I am soooooooo happy that she embraces herself!! It's time to stop the redhead hate- I don't care what skin color, but especially in my culture- it is GORGEOUS.

Your daughter is very special and such a beautiful little girl! I was adopted by a black family my ... my mother(adopted mother who is the only mother I have ever known) my sister had red hair and people called her redbone (which she hated by the way) our older siblings teased us as kids calling us "White Girl" which is funny now but hurtful at the time. My mother saved my life as a child and loved me unconditionally as well as my siblings who would take a bullet for me and I for them. I was jealous that my mother spent so much time on my sister's hair..she started putting on conditioner and a cap to make me feel better. My sister who was only two months older than me was profoundly affected by being relentlessly teased by kids at school she died her hair dark and put braids or a weave in when we were young. Now my sister has natural curly red hair and embraces how special her red hair is and wears it proudly!

People always think 2 Brown-skin biological parents cannot produce a light-skin or pale-skin child. But both my grandparents on both my mom & dad side had about 10 children. And all my uncles & aunts came in various colors from the darkest skin tone to the lightest skin tone. Growing up seeing this, I always thought the more kids u have, the further it would reach back to the bi-racial ancestors from slave times and reproduce a lighter skin child. Of course, this was before we had access to DNA. Now that I, and some of my family members have taken the DNA TEST; it just somewhat confirmed what I was thinking back then. Most Black people have now discovered we are all mixed with European or some other ethnicities.

I did enjoy this video! Being a redhead myself I HAD to watch this video! And let me just say your wee redhead is ADORABLE! The story of her birth was so familiar to me because I spent my whole nursing career as a neonatal nurse and I have lived that story so many times, both from the white baby surprising the the African American parents and the red headed baby surprising the white parents who didn’t know until the birth of their child there was a red hair gene on either side let alone both sides and a few times the daddy was a little tiny bit suspicious about where this awesome little redhead came from nor that white baby to the black parents. Having spent my working life in neonatal nursing it gives you a keen interest in genetics, it’s never a dull moment. Thank you for sharing your story, you both are lovely. P.S. it was always an understood rule in the nursery where I worked ALL redheaded babies were mine! Not that I ever got to take any home. 😮❤They really are such a happy little surprise!

I’m “white”, but really, really pale-even for someone who’s “white”. I don’t actually like the language of using “white” and “black” to describe race, as I feel like it’s automatically polarizing by definition. In my experience, people are actually shades of brown. What a lovely couple, and very special of you to share the events of your daughter's birth. I am learning so much through these videos about the social culture of the USA coming from Australia. What it shows of the legacy of slavery is that we are all human beings and have so much to give and share. All the very best to you and family.

Loling over the hair, in Ireland some of our red heads have red afro hair and I remember the difference it made when afro hairdressers started to open up here and they found that it was possible to actually grow their hair and manage it ! Red hair is also common amongst the berber people of North Africa it would be interesting to see which of the different mutations you carry to allow you to be able to see what specific tribes and clans you inherited them from !

Enjoyed this, Dr. Trish! Y'all are funny! First of all, Peyton looks exactly like Daddy. Secondly, this brings back memories of a family in my neighborhood (mid 50s through mid-sixties), African American, light skinned but not pale, every single one of them red heads! I think there were about 10 of them. Not, "in the sun their hair looks red," no, it was RED. Just found your channel a few days ago and I love it! I don't think YT likes links, but have you watched, "Why are Africans Shocked at Their DNA Results," the channel is "History on the Go," by Leonard Guy, a historian. It's excellent and makes the important point that identification with human-created political entities called countries is misleading when exploring one's ancestry. Both your daughters are beautiful! God Bless you all! 1-9-22

@@codechtapia3411 it only works if by chance other family members have done the DNA specifically with the same company. I just got lucky with mine. So in brief I found out at 36 the person named as my dad on my birth certificate wasnt my dad! I then at 40 decided to try and see and did Ancestory dna. Oddly enough my estranged half sister (who I was meant to share the same dad as), had also done the same, so I had clear defined mum vs dad DNA. Luckily I did get a match with whom turns out to be a Great Aunty.....who has alzheimer's. So my questions got odd answers. I then recieved a message from another member of my biological dads side by chance. With a who are you, urm well haha. So through working out who was my closest link, searching people in UK, finding addresses based on old family information of areas, some letter writing, with mixed responses. Eventually a second cousin read my letter at his dads and contacted me. At first I was denied by the Head of my new found Scottish clan, now I'm accepted. Yet to meet due to covid as we had only just met through social media and phone calls. I finally found my kin, we all so far got on. My great uncle was blown away about how alike we are. Unfortunately my dad was already dead. That's the sad part. The ? That was over my head my whole life has gone. You know when you're being lied to and treated differently.

@@jennahcollings1174 Similar story here. Found out at 38 dad on birth certificate is not my bio dad. I tested on 4 different sites and with the help of a DNA detective, have found my paternal grandfather. Meeting his “outside”daughter this weekend and she agreed to test. Hopefully she comes back as a half aunt and I will know one of her half brothers is my dad. Oh I’m 41 now.

Thank you so much Dr Varner, this is a great video (your husband is hilarious). I guessed Nigerian for you and Senegal/Mali for your husband. When I got my ancestry genetics tested I was not surprised, as a White person from the South, that I have a small amount of African and an equally small amount of Indigenous ancestry. I would never have known if I hadn't done the test. Our genes, more than our faces, tell the much of the story of our country and I find it fascinating, as well as liberating in a sense.
