I'd like to spend more time on Internet Archives. I've found a couple books that have info on ancestors, and I'd like to see if there are more in other counties for other branches. I've seen older books on Amazon. It looked like a reprint of books that are no longer copywrited, but people might want for research/ genealogy reasons. But I'd want to make sure it's something I'd want before buying. Looking at the books on sites like Archives, The National Archives, state historical societies, etc. would be good for that.

I just finished a degree in family history research. The last several classes we spent a lot of time learning about “lost counties” the Map of the US site would have been so helpful I wish I had known about it sooner.

Thanks so much. Doing family research for the Shenandoah Valley can be a nightmare with records and courthouses being burned in the 1860s. Did not know about a lot of these.

What happened to the census after the 1900's? Do they not do them anymore?

No. They do them every 10 years but we only have access to the 1950 census and earlier. The more recent census records are held for privacy reasons.

What about wiki tree? I use wiki tree as much as a used family search for the global tree

I’m also a big fan of wikitree. Seeing your name, I think you could possibly have a good bit of Canadian French or something similar. I’m from Louisiana and familiar with the surname, although it’s spelled differently here than in Canada. I could be wrong. But I have that surname in my tree.

Thank you for the insight. My situation is tricky. How do I check my ex husband's marriage information from his first wife? I only know his information. I do not know where they got married nor her name. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you again!

More recent documents can be tricky for privacy purposes - each state has different laws. You need to figure out where he married and then contact that county and ask about the availability of those records. Usually marriage records are publicly available, but you may need to get it from the county.

I usually just drive through Albemarle Co on the way to Nelson Co and the weatger men say it here a lot because albemarke sound nc isn't far from va state line. They say it a little more southern in NC or in the mountains. HR doesn't sound as southern because of the melting pot that the navy brings. You don't otherwise have an accent. I could place you from speaking anyway. You're just not from albemarle or hampton roads, is all.

@@AncestryAimee doing Hungary, Austria, and Slovenia , when visiting and what records they have are sparce. How do I find the parents who were not married. I checked their death information and parents were not listed. Beside using them is there another option for me to search. I have blocks on all 4 ,, each parent generally. The priest records over there don’t know or won’t look. If you need lower Austria, when I was visiting the Kukmirn parish had the most records. He even has a memorial of most of the people who came to America. A lovely minister and wife if they are still around. Thank you for answering me. Victoria Weninger.

I see what you mean. Yes it’s true and the language barrier makes it more so. I specialize in U.S. research and don’t have good thoughts for you there. I’m sure you have been on the FamilySearch wiki pages for the country and local areas. Sometimes I find good suggestions or record sets there but some of those issues you mention are true regardless. Also check MyHeritage. They are obtaining records too in Europe.

Europe has lots of sites that are very good, Filae for French, Archion for German, wiewaswie for Netherlands etc. use the Familysearch wiki to find access. So it depends which country.

My list would be very similar except I would swap US sites for UK, Ireland and Australia. Trove - online Australian newspapers free BNA British Newspaper Archive - online British papers $ but can be accessed thru FMP Vital records - in Australia by state $, Scotlands People $, Irish Church Records (civil and church) free, GRO for England and Wales $ Freereg - civil and church records free
