I watched this just recently and today found my great-grandfather at age 5 with his family in the 1895 Minnesota census! The first immigrants in my family are thought to have arrived in the US in 1882, so the lack of an 1890 census is very unfortunate. But the 1885 and 1895 Minnesota censuses might be very helpful.

Sadly no Pennsylvania state census on there. 1890 is such a critical year for my research :-(

Thanks for the reminder that city directories are useful. i traced great grandparents business with another person, they eventually had their own business. Filled in gaps for working and living locations.

5:45 "Any Event: 1885 Exact" doesn't work any more. There is a new box at the bottom labeled Census Year and you can enter 1885 there to narrow it down.

This gap is a hug wall for a part of my family because it was right when the parents got divorced and the daughters turned 20. Since there are only female ancestors and they have a very common last name I can't find mom and the oldest daughters. They all fall off the face of the earth in 1890.

Small towns also published city directories. Newspapers are also a great resource for the late 1800s. They were like the Facebook of their day. The comings and goings of everyone was published for all to see.

Ancestry has a few million records specific to the state of Maryland. Is there something specific you are looking for?

@@AncestryUS I realize you do have a lot of records for Maryland and I have found, mostly US Census records where I got the names and birth dates for my GGGrand Parents and their family. I found this info years ago. What I cannot find is any in formation of the immigration or Naturlization. So I cannot make the Irish connection. I also cannot find any info of a presumed 5th child. My GGGrand Parents , through the taking of the 1880 census, had 4 children. As the 1890 census for both the US and Maryland is non-existent, the next is the 1900 Census. In the 1900 census, it is asked "How many living children do you have?". My GGGrandmother states 5. Now tell me, how do I find this 5th child? They are not in the 1900 census. I've looked everywhere in and outside of Ancestry and only found one person that could be the 5th child as she had the same surname and worked as a nurse in the hospital my GGGrand Father died. One problem is her given name is the same as my GGGrand Mother. This is a problem because there already is a child in the family with this given name. That's about it, after years of research through State, county and US records. Do you have an answer for this? Can you understand the frustration when searching for birth records. for your surname. in Baltimore Maryland and finding no one from your family in the results? And YES they are all born in Baltimore (info from Census records)

@@rjb6327 Have you considered that the birth records for the county where your family was living may not have made all of their records available online? Have you contacted the county records office and asked them to search their records for you? Have you considered that the surname have been misspelled in the original records or in the transcription? Have you used some creative search parameters including searching without a name? Have you considered that for the twenty years between 1880 and 1900 that the family may have lived elsewhere? Have you located obituaries for both parents and all of the known children in the family to see who they list as surviving children/siblings? Those are just a few ideas off the top of my head.
