That was an excellent conversation, so thank you for putting it together. The format could do with a little tweaking, as it looks rather 'formal'. A more 'fire-side' chat would make for easier exchange of views, not just for the participants but also the audience. Mention of Scindia Shipyard in Vizag, that was eventually handed over to the GoI as Hindustan Shipyard, reminds me of Mr. Wankawala. He was retained as an Advisor to the new owners, to facilitate the transition. Mr. W. had during his time as Manager of the Calcutta Office, two very able assistants. One was AT Joseph, the Engineer Suptd. and the other was JC Anand, the Marine Suptd. Listening to Mr. W. recount tales of his days in SSNC (during my formative days as a cadet in DMET) remain etched in my mind forever. Mention of a professional knowledge society (Nautical Institute) and a 'cocktail club' like the 'Company of Master Mariners' raises a relevant issue worthy of consideration. Most members of the former land up in the latter. In an international setting, the latter does not attempt to replace the 'knowledge' platform of the former. Perhaps Master Mariners in India can look at forming an indeginous knowledge society, drawing inspiration from how the erstwhile Institute of Marine Engineers (India Division) of IMaE (UK) branched off and became IME (I) while the UK-based entity transformed to become IMarEST.
