Τhat's very nice and true! This is the herritage of ancient Greeks to the world, not only for the Greeks, for anyone can feel it. So that makes us all spiritual brothers. As an Athenian that is born, grown up and educated below the sacred hill of Acropolis, I consider my self as a citisen of the world, like my ancestors. Try next time to watch a performance in the ancient theater of Herod of Atticus below Acropolis or in the ancient theater of Epidaurus. Ι once watched Shakespeare's ''Τhe Τempest'' outside a medieval castle in Wales, UK and was enchanted. Imagine how much stronger this feeling is watching tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides or comedies by Aristophanesis in an ancient theater in Greece, especially in Athens where the theater was born! My regards from Athens, Flora.

I am going to contact the parents of my 5th graders and have them screen this and decide as a family of it is okay for their child to watch it. We study Ancient Greece and I think this would be fascinating for the students to see, but some of the images and ideas may make parents pause if shown in school. But I do hope they have a good conversation with their children and watch it first without them and decide if they decide their children are mature enough to understand and appreciate this wonderful documentary. I hope they end up watching together and have good discussions as a family.

Thanks so much for this refreshing documentary. As a part of an arts course in 1998, we visited a couple of the places in Athens and between them were the Acropolis, the Parthenon & The Museum of Delphi. In the evening, I visited along with friends Plaka. Greece is one of the most magical countries on this Earth. And, very interesting as stated in this documentary that back then they had openly slavery including accountants and bankers. Today, happens the same. A grand slavery they don't notice nor intend to accept it but they are slaves. Follow orders. They submit to abuses just for money.

About the slave comments i saw = Slavs came much later and the Romans made them Slaves, a word that Latin languages kept. The Ancient Greek word was 'Doulos' and meant servant/follower but in Byzantine times became 'Sklavlos' from the Roman word. (today both used in Greece) There are still Greek names with DOULOS inside, like Christodoulos = 'the servant of Christ', that prove the real meaning. When baptized in Greece the priest says exactly : 'Baptized is the Doulos of God', the servant/follower of God.

I'm reminded of my high school days; history is the best sedative. I think I'd fall asleep at the parthenon in the middle of summer. does Greece have anything not 3,000 years old? Or maybe something more geological in nature? 9,000 ya and even farther back, it was humid, wet and hotter than today - like a jungle. How about a documentary about "Greece" before it was just one large historical site? lol.

Maybe somewhere on the fringes of the interwebs that you find some outright nonsense like alien conspiracy, but in the actual archaeological and scientific world Greece is one of the by far most researched established pieces of history in the world. We know exacttly who made it, with what, were the marble came from, who gave the orders, how many years it took, why they do it. We may even know who made who pregnant while building the parthenon. So no worries about aliens.

@sundromos9456
@sundromos9456 2 жыл бұрын
@@nikhtose In the video it is stated that the Parthenon was erected in honor of Athene, "the Goddess of Victory". This is simply not true. You have some broad strokes correct but things as always are much more complicated: (*READ ON*)...The Parthenon was meant to house both the Treasury of the League of Delos, as well as the large ivory statue of Athena Parthenos, the "virgin" Athena, (perhaps you could say, the Athena of unbroken integrity-the "inviolable" virgin-but that's not the Athena of victory)...and this statue was a gift of the polis to Athena. Athena Parthenos was one of the many epithets, or "roles" associated with the goddess. Athena Promachos was another, describing her association with battle, war and strategy, which you have alluded to. In ancient, pre-classical Athens, a huge bronze statue of this Athena Promachos stood for a thousand years about midway between the present-day site of the Propylaea and that of the Parthenon. More to the point, southwest of the Propylaea sits the recently renovated temple of Athena Nike. Nike is well known as the goddess of victory...this is documented, in art and myth. But because Athena, was so often also associated with the attributes of the victorious Nike, over time the epithet "Athena Nike", arose- melding the traits of Nike and Athena as pertaining to success in battle, or defensive strategizing. Again, the attribute of "Athena-as-Nike" or Athena as "victory" was not a focus of the construction of the Parthenon. The Parthenon was meant (in addition to housing the treasury) solely to honor and house the statue representing Athena Parthenos...and you might say more broadly, "Pallas Athena"-the umbrella epithet from which all the others stem...wisdom, war, protectress of the polis, arts, esp. craft-making the home, cooking, etc.

"No other culture has left as much written evidence as Athens?" I'm thinking Egypt and China left more written evidence. All citizens had to read and write, but citizens didn't include women and slave for example. Keep up the good archaeological work, but no need to exaggerate.

There are not much in Egypt, that is wrong. and most of that was only read after Roseta stone. The Greek ones were read continuously for 2500 years and based the West Civ. @@damnyourpasswords I think the Egyptian empire lasted a few thousand years more than Athens, and there is more that we continue to learn from archaeology. It was easier to study the Greek and Roman ruins/remains because of easier access to western areas. But, we knew and keep learning about Egyptian medicine, science, religion, literature, poetry. We know that it was ok for historians to value the multiple gods of Greece and Rome, but not of Egypt for example. Part of the applause for Greece is because of their supposedly early attempt at a type of democracy. I still have an ancient history textbook from the 1950s, and it's quite evident that there were many omissions about Egypt and other civilizations also. I'm not as knowledgeable about China, but do know we have multiple writings.

@@lucillejerome5511 I said there are not much in Egypt = not evidence, not scriptures, not much survived. bits and pieces of an ephemeral puzzle that changes now and then. Compare this to a continuous flow of information for centuries that were Re-tranlated and super-studied for 2 millenia : no comparison. Ancient Egyptian knowledge mystified Greeks, they ADORED Egypt. But = 1. when they conquered Egypt, we learned nothing more about it , no revelations etc, so the old knowledge was lost maybe earlier? 2. as all other older civs, knowledge of anything was the prerogative of ... the priesthood, kept in secret. In Greece, knowledge was TAUGHT in public schools, unbelievable, as they had types of Democracy around. That is what the West Civ adopted and surpassed Asia/Africa whatever, and is still today number 1 in everything.

@@damnyourpasswords Actually, we were taught that many Greek mathematicians and philosophers went to Egypt to study and took back to Greece much knowledge. The 'old knowledge' wasn't lost it was integrated into Greek culture - and then maybe lost. Later on, of course Egypt went into the background so to speak. Yes Greek male citizens were taught, but not slaves and women with some exception. Yes, eventually the West did supersede all previous civilizations, but that doesn't mean we disown the past cultures from which we learned something. Egyptian scribes did teach the upper classes.
