The key move in the Bible's viewpoint is not denying the other gods' existence; it is in denying the other gods' status.

Really? Watch Jordan Peterson and his group talk about Exodus... Some of them deny all together the Bible brings up other gods. Maybe gives an alternative point of view to discuss
@10010110110105 ай бұрын
@@kevindiliberto9678 This is strange if true. Exodus 12:12 says "And I will pass through the land of Egypt that night, and will kill every firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast: and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments; I am the Lord." So here we see judgment being commanded against not just the Egyptians but their gods as well, implying their lesser status when compared with the Lord of the Israelites. Perhaps the most straightforward Biblical passage about the other gods is Psalm 96 (95 in LLX): For the Lord is great, and exceedingly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods. For all the gods of the Gentiles are devils: but the Lord made the heavens. Praise and beauty are before him: holiness and majesty in his sanctuary. Today, of course, in our very Christianized language we have certain ideas of what God is or what demons are, that may not have exactly applied then. In ancient Hebrew, like in some languages today, "gods" can lack a specific common word applied to it compared with, say, "spirits", so if you want to really analyze it in the ancients' terms it gets a bit more muddled because of the vocabulary differences. So when you read about the Prophet Samuel being summoned by a witch, some translations may refer to him as a "god" when really he is a "spirit". And so on and so forth

According to the general consensus of scholarship *(even critical Christian scholars),* YHWH was originally incorporated into the Canaanite pantheon as a son of the Canaanite high god El before inheriting the top spot in the pantheon and El's wife Athirat (Asherah) before religious reforms "divorced" them. El's pantheon in Ugarit (modern day Ras Shamra in Syria) is called the *Elohim,* literally the plural of El. Interestingly, the Biblical god is also referred to numerous times as Elohim. If you want to see if El is fictional, just read his mythology in the Ugaritic/Canaanite texts. "The mysterious Ugaritic text Shachar and Shalim tells how (perhaps near the beginning of all things) *El* came to shores of the sea and saw two women who bobbed up and down. *El* was sexually aroused and took the two with him, killed a bird by throwing a staff at it, and roasted it over a fire. He asked the women to tell him when the bird was fully cooked, and to then address him either as husband or as father, for he would thenceforward behave to them as they called him. They saluted him as husband. He then lay with them, and they gave birth to Shachar ("Dawn") and Shalim ("Dusk"). Again *El* lay with his wives and the wives gave birth to "the gracious gods", "cleavers of the sea", "children of the sea". The names of these wives are not explicitly provided, but some confusing rubrics at the beginning of the account mention the goddess *Athirat (Asherah),* who is otherwise *El's* chief wife, and the goddess Raḥmayyu ("the one of the womb"), otherwise unknown." *"First, a god named El predates the arrival of the Israelites into Syria-Palestine.* Biblical usage shows El was not just a generic noun, but often a proper name for Israel’s God (e.g., Gen 33:20: “El, the God of Israel”)." "I should add here that it is very clear from the grammar that the noun nachalah in v. 9 should be translated “inheritance.” *Yahweh receives Israel as his “inheritance” (nachalah), just as the other sons of El received their nations as their inheritance (nachal, v. 8).* With this verb, especially in the Hiphil, the object is always what is being given as an inheritance. Thus, Israel is given to Yahweh as his inheritance. ((Here I’m indebted to Dan McClellan.)) It would make no sense for Elyon to give himself an inheritance. Moreover, as I’ve argued elsewhere, it is not just the Gentile nations that are divided up according to the number of the *sons of El.* It is all of humankind, i.e., “the sons of Adam.” This clearly includes Israel. And the sons of Adam are not divided up according to the number of the *sons of El,* plus one (i.e., plus Elyon). They are divided up, according to the text, *solely* according to the number of the *sons of El.* *Thus, that Yahweh receives Israel as his inheritance makes Yahweh one of the sons of El mentioned in v. 8. Any other construal of the text would constitute its rewriting.* A Sumerian hymn speaks to the goddess: “Nanshe, your divine powers are not matched by any other divine powers.” *Does this mean that Nanshe was the high goddess, that there were no gods above her? No, it does not.* Nanshe was the daughter of Enki, the high god. *In Sumerian mythology, as with Ugaritic, Israelite, Babylonian, and others, in the ancient past, the high god (Enki, in this case) divided up the world and assigned his children certain domains.* Nanshe was given a limited domain (the modern Persian Gulf) and was tasked with maintaining social justice there. *This is exactly what we see in Deuteronomy 32 with Yahweh. Yahweh is given a limited domain (Israel) and is given authority over his people, to punish them, as well as to protect and defend them against foreign enemies.* That Yahweh, like Nanshe, is said to have incomparable divine power *does not* mean that he is not subordinate to the high god who gave him his domain. *It is also of note that Nanshe, like Baal, Yahweh, and so many other deities, evolved over time. Her domain increased, and she was promoted in the pantheon (although she never became the high goddess)."* *"The Most Heiser: Yahweh and Elyon in Psalm 82 and Deuteronomy 32 - Religion at the Margins"* based on the *majority scholarly consensus.* (Written by Thom Stark who is a Christian) *"Michael Heiser: A Unique Species? - Religion at the Margins"* (A second response to Michael Heiser) *"Excerpt from “Yahweh and the Gods and Goddesses of Canaan” by John Day - Lehi's Library."* *"The Table of Nations: The Geography of the World in Genesis 10"* - TheTorah.com (Excluding the short narrative on Nimrod (vv. 8-12), *which appears to be a later addition,* Genesis 10 contains *70* names of nations or cities, a number that was symbolic of totality. Similarly, the descendants of Jacob were *70* in number (Gen 46:37; Exod 1:5), *as were the sons of the supreme Canaanite god El, with whom YHWH became equated.)* *"Polytheism and Ancient Israel’s Canaanite Heritage. Part V | theyellowdart"* (Of course, much of this [i.e., that Israel worshiped El and Asherah alongside YHWH] is really to be expected given that recent syntheses of the *archaeological, cultural, and literary data* pertaining to the emergence of the nation of Israel in the Levant *show that most of the people who would eventually compose this group were originally Canaanite. As the Hebrew Bible notes, the Hebrew language itself is a Canaanite language, literally the “lip of Canaan” (שְׂפַת כְּנַעַן; Is. **19:18**), and so it cannot often be distinguished by modern scholars from other Canaanite inscriptions on purely linguistic grounds.)* *"Ugarit - New World Encyclopedia"* (Ugaritic religion centered on the chief god, Ilu or El, whose titles included "Father of mankind" and "Creator of the creation." The Court of El was referred to as the (plural) 'lhm or ***Elohim,*** a word ***later used by the biblical writers to describe the Hebrew deity*** and translated into English as "God," in the singular. El, which was ***also the name of the God of Abraham,*** was described as an aged deity with white hair, seated on a throne.) *"Mark Smith: Yahweh as El’s Son & Yahweh’s Ascendency - Lehi's Library"* (Mark Smith is a Catholic) *"God, Gods, and Sons (and Daughters) of God in the Hebrew Bible. Nevertheless, the historical reconstruction that El was the chief god of the Israelites is not indebted only to the testimony of the (rather late) biblical witness of P. *Numerous biblical texts attest to the fact that the titles, functions, and the imagery associated with the Canaanite god El, as revealed by the Ugaritic texts and the Canaanite myth of Elkunirša, were assimilated into the profile of the deity YHWH.* According to the Ugaritic texts, El was known for his *wisdom* (e.g., KTU2 1.4.V.65[6]) and *great age* (’ab šnm, *“Father of Years,”* and drd, *“Ageless One,”* in KTU2 1.4.IV.24 and 1.10.III.6, respectively),[7] his *compassionate nature* (lţpn il dp’id, *“Kind El, the Compassionate One,”* e.g., KTU2 1.16.IV.9), his role as *father of the gods and humanity* (’ab ’adm, *“father of humanity,”* KTU2 1.14..III.47, and bny bnwt, *“creator of creatures,”* KTU2 1.17.I.24) and *creator of the cosmos.* [8] El was the *divine King* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) and the *head of the pantheon or divine council* (referred to variously as the dr ’il, *“circle of El/Family of El,”* KTU2 1.15.III.19; mpħrt bn ’il, *“the assembly of the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.65.3; bn ’il, *“the sons of El,”* KTU2 1.40.33, 41; pħr kbbm, *“assembly of the stars,”* KTU2 1.10.I.3-4; ‘dt ’ilm, *“assembly of the gods,”* KTU2 1.15.II.7; cf. KTU2 1.2.I; 1.3V; 1.4 IV-V) which met at the sacred mountain. *His consort was the goddess Athirat who bore him seventy sons* (šb‘m bn ’atrt, *“the seventy sons of Athirat,”* KTU2 1.4.VI.46). El was also known for his *divine patronage and blessing of progeny to humans* (as in the Epic of Kirta; see, for example, KTU2 1.14.III.46-51), for his *appearances to humans in dreams* (e.g., KTU2 1.14.I.35-37), as *being a healer* (KTU2 1.16.V-VI), and for his *dwelling at the sacred mountain* (e.g., KTU2 1.2.III.5-6) at the *sources of the mythical rivers* (KTU2 1.2.III.4; 1.3.V.6; 1.4.IV.20-22; 1.17.V.47-48) in a *tent* (KTU2 1.2.III.5; 1.3.V.8; 1.4.IV.24; 1.17.V.49; c.f. the Canaanite myth Elkunirša which *describes El’s abode as a tent[9]).[10]* *To underscore the fact that terminology and imagery originally used for the god El was adopted by the Israelites in their descriptions of YHWH,* the following brief summary might be placed in comparison to the discussion of El above: YHWH is an *aged, patriarchal deity* (Ps. 102:28; Job 36:26; Is. 40:28; Dan. 7.9-14, 22), *a father* (Deut. 32:6; Is. 63:16; 64:7; Jer. 3:4, 19; 31:9, etc.), *merciful and gracious* (Ex. 34:6; Jon. 4:2; Joel 2:13; Ps. 8615; 103:8; 145:8, etc.), *a divine patron who bestows the blessing of progeny upon Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,* often manifesting himself in *dreams or visions, a healer* (Gen. 20:17; Num. 12:13; 2 Kgs. 20:5, 8; Ps. 107:20, etc.), who *dwells in a tent* (Ps. 15:1; 27:6; 91:10; 132:3) *amidst the heavenly waters* (Ps. 47:5; 87; Is. 33: 20-22; Ez. 47:1-12, etc.), the *creator of the cosmos,* who is enthroned as *heavenly King* in the *divine council* (1 Kgs. 22:19; Is. 6:1-8; cf. Ps. 29:1-2; 82; 89: 5-8, etc.) on the *sacred mount of assembly* (e.g., Is. 14:13). Additionally, in much Israelite religious practice throughout the monarchic period, *YHWH had a divine consort, the goddess Asherah, the Hebrew equivalent of Ugaritic Athirat.[11]* (Originally the wife of El) *"When Jehovah Was Not the God of the Old Testament. Last year, I stepped out of Christianity and learned about other religions, and my need for knowledge led me to learn about God and where God came from. And I finally concluded that all religions are made-made and the gods are made up. Just myths. Now I don't have a religion. But I believe in the god of the universe. The true God, the one that believed by Xenophanes: 1] that "God is one, supreme among gods and men, and not like mortals in body or in mind." He maintained that there was one greatest God. God is one eternal being, spherical in form, comprehending all things within himself, is the absolute mind and thought,[q] therefore is intelligent, and moves all things, but bears no resemblance to human nature either in body or mind. is: beyond human morality, does not resemble human form, cannot die or be born (God is divine thus eternal), no divine hierarchy exists, and God does not intervene in human affairs.[13] And I'm going to add that this God has no religion and does not favour one nation above the rest because all people and all things are his. Has no "holy book" so called, but has written his laws and will in everything. God is not out there, he/she or it, whatever you wanna call it is within you.

Atargatis is said to be the mermaid who was the original inspiration for all mermaid stories. She was an Assyrian Goddess. She was said to be the goddess of the moon, fertility and water and was worshipped 3000-4000 years ago in ancient Assyria and later all over the Mediterranean, the Canaanite Asherah, known as Athirat, the wife of El and mother of the gods, was a principal deity in Tyre, and the connection of Asherah to the maternal goddess Astarte has been a long-standing theory among scholars. Astarte, goddess of war and sexual love, shared so many qualities with her sister, Anath, that they may originally have been seen as a single deity. Their names together are the basis for the Aramaic goddess Atargatis. Atargatis is a Kuliltu, Sumerian "Fish-Woman", Kulullû, inscribed 𒄩𒇽𒍇𒇻, "Fish-Man", was an ancient Mesopotamian mythical monster. Assyrian mythology, he was associated with kuliltu, "Fish-Woman", and statues of them were located in the Nabû temple in Nimrud, ancient Kalhu. Dagon was a god within the Mesopotamian pantheon of over 1000 deities. He was worshiped as a creator god, chief deity, and lord of the land in ancient Syria and coastal regions near the Euphrates river, where he was later depicted as half-man, half-fish, his wife was Shalash; while well attested in Tuttul and elsewhere, she is seemingly absent in sources pertaining to Dagan's cult in Terqa. Their children were Hadad (analogous to Ugaritic Baal) and possibly Hebat, who is attested alongside Dagan and Shalash in a mourning ritual from ancient Aleppo. In Sumerian shalasu, means “merciful”, “mercy” in Sumerian is shashuningin, both words are based on sha, meaning “heart”. The Sumerian names Ninkusi ("lady of gold"), Ninudishara ("mistress who amazes the world") and Ninsuhzagina ("Lady, diadem of lapis lazuli") as synonymous with Shalash. Shala (Šala) was a Mesopotamian goddess of weather and grain and the wife of the weather god Adad. Shalash is Ninlil, the wife on Enlil, the god El

This wasn’t a matter of Yahweh failing to overcome the iron chariots. It was a matter of the people of Judah failing to have faith in Yahweh that he would protect them from the iron chariots. If you study the chapter as a whole, you’ll see that Yahweh commanded the Israelites to completely destroy the Cannanites. No prisoners type of deal. At first, this is what they do and everything goes well for them. But then, Judah loses its nerve and refuses to go against the iron chariots despite Yahweh’s promise that the land would be delivered to them. Everything falls like a house of cards after that initial sin. Not only do they not kill all the Cannanites in the land, some tribes even allow some Cannanites to remain in the land and live with them. This is exactly the opposite of what Yahweh commanded the Israelites to do. It wasn’t a matter of Yahweh not being powerful enough to expel the Cannanites. It was a matter of the Israelites choosing not to have the faith required to get the job done. Its important to study the actual literature itself to fully understand what the text is saying, instead of basing all your information off of one KZbin video. Videos like these are very informative, bring up great discussion points, and give accurate information. However, they often do not give all the information needed to fully understand the topic, and often that information is biased to one side or the other.

There are plenty of Christian KZbinrs who react to videos like this. Inspiring Philosophy is one, Mike Winger is another. Beware of the KZbin echo chamber. That algorithm will suck you into a hole of one-sided information. Fact-checking this stuff yourself is also a good idea and fairly easy to do, if you are interested enough to do so. For example, in this video the guy talks about Yahweh losing to iron chariots. This is a really bad interpretation, which one would see fairly clearly if they studied the entire chapter of Judges. Basically, the Israelites lost faith and disobeyed Yahweh’s commands to wipe out the Cannanites. They lost because they chose to do the opposite of what God told them to do, not because God was less powerful than the Cannanite gods. Googling this stuff and looking up videos of these issues will expose you to a lot more information from the other side of the aisle, so to speak. If you start pursuing this information yourself and listen to what the other side has to say, whatever that other side is to you, you will soon realize that these issues are far more complex than what videos like this make it seem.

A reasonable explanation of the origin of the ancient Hebrews is that a number of them came from Egypt to the land of Canaan under the leadership of a man who was called Moses. They were likely related culturally or otherwise to the Canaanites, they fought with and intermingled with the Canaanites and adopted, adapted, borrowed or shared many of their beliefs or religious views. As with other ancient biblical stories, the tales about the Hebrews leaving Egypt and coming to the land of Canaan through the desert were transmitted and described with embellishments, exaggerations, and metaphorical or supernatural depictions. But these embellished stories were rooted in real historical events.

Although some late 19th and early 20th Century scholars proposed that the Israelite god Yahweh is a form of the Sumero-Akkadian god Enki/Ea, this theory was quietly abandoned in the scholarly reaction against "Pan-Babylonism," and has not been revived since that time. In light of new knowledge gained over the past century, this theory deserves a fresh, comprehensive argumentation on its behalf. The primary basis for the idea that the biblical god (considering both Yahweh and his incarnation in Jesus) is a form of Enki/Ea lies in the considerable congruency between the theological traditions of these gods, which encompasses divine names, functions, values, and character traits; literary themes; mythic images; ideologies; cultic forms; and socio-historical circumstances. The theological symbol system encompassing Enki/Ea and the biblical god has an underlying "astral" character, with this god-form being a personification of the star Canopus. The astral symbology of this symbol system is indicated by the identification of deities with stars in late Babylonian astronomical and astrological texts, including Ea = Canopus; the use of a star-sign in cuneiform for the word "deity"; coherence between behaviors and characteristics of gods and the heavenly bodies which are their visible manifestations; and social and cultic institutions which mirror the heavens, following the principle of "as above, so below." Arriving at this conclusion requires knowledge of the principles of positional astronomy, including data generated by computer calculations of star positions in antiquity, taking the phenomenon of precession into consideration. Among the challenges the argument faces is that of bridging the gap between polytheism and monotheism, a task aided by evidence of significant residues of polytheism in the biblical tradition, as well as of the monolatrous character of the Enki/Ea tradition. The principal other Sumero-Akkadian god who appears to be implicated in biblical religion is Dumuzi/Tammuz, a son of Enki/Ea and a personification of the planet Mercury. Part one discusses Enki/Ea; part two discusses the biblical god as a development of Enki/Ea; and part three discusses the astral character of the symbol system encompassing Enki/Ea and the biblical god.

I point out that there are multiple gods all the time, and then the christians flip out. Then I point out that Jesus is the God of all gods and King of all kings, and then the christians flip out along with atheists and agnostics.

Yes. Technically by the rules of "Higher Criticism" much of your post is probably right. When the Hebrews were removed to Babalon a lot of documents and maybe parts of the Pentateuch were lost. The scribes had to construct a lot of the text from memory. Some of the text was corrupted. That is guessing and speculation but if is close to the known history. Why the conflict ? The essence of theology is there. Love G*D. Obey G*D. Do good works. Is that so awful ? Criticism is just counterintuitive for the faithful. G*D exist as a univercial spirit that guides humanity through history for his purpose and "Glory." That is the faith of worship. Reconstruction of the scriptures is "foolish" to a believer in Almighty G*D. Shalom and Amen...

Israelite culture was constructed by doing the opposite of the peoples they came from .this is how they created identifying features for there new culture .if they didn’t do that the people of the new society wouldn’t be able to see the difference between the two and would have no reason to stay loyal and under oppression by the priests that were constructing it .they sanctioned genocide because they knew the truth about them .some of the people had a hard time shedding there old traditions and superstitions .this is evident from the multiple god worship including yhwh .

It's not that gods are metaphors or symbology of stars, but that stars were used as metaphors for gods, or symbolically named after them, the angels being given representation by having stars named after them. When true God El was killed, it was called as dusk, and the one trying to take power being related to a morning star, similar to Egyptian sunset and sunrise. And it is not that gods are just a metaphor for seasons, but that seasons were a metaphor for the gods, and it was in fact that when the actual one God was removed from power, it caused draught, deserts, disease and death itself, when with him all have eternal life in heaven on earth.

Probably a naive question, but still: So can EL be the equivalent of Sumerian ANU? If so, who would be the Canaanite equivalent of sumerian ENKI and ENLIL? Thank you for the explanation.

I’m never gonna understand why y’all don’t go straight to the Sumerian texts. They came first. All these biblical writings are based on the Sumerian texts, Dead Sea scrolls, nah Hammadi, atrahasis, and Enuma Elish. They were not religious teachings but mere written accounts for the sake of historical record. They ALL PREDATE ANY BIBLICAL TEACHINGS. You cannot get a full innerstanding without knowing this information. However , no Christian even wants to touch the subject. If your studies are limited to just the old and New Testaments, you’re not getting the entire story.

Great video and explanation, my only question is how do we know Habacuc 3 was referring to Gods and not actual things. My Bible has sun and moon instead of actual gods names. And how do we know Canaanites were used as god names and not actual nouns?

One thing that scolars seem to overlook is that in the time referenced in the Bible, Egypt extended well into the Levant. So it's entirely possible that they could have been in Egypt and Canaan simultaneously.

Ive heard several scholars explicitly mention that its quite likely that its a cultural memory of when Canaan was just Greater Egypt and legally speaking they were in fact Slave of the Pharoah so idk what you're saying?

Any reading of the Bible makes it clear that the Israelites believed that there were many gods. It was not so much that they believed there was only 1 God, rather that their God was the best and the only 1 to be worshipped. It's really like the football supporter who believes that their team is the best and only team to be supported - all other teams are imposters! Silly isn't it!

@brianlittle92025 ай бұрын
They didn't do any research on this. Elohim is a plural term that LITERALLY means the powerful ones. Yahweh isn't GOD the creator. Which is why he demanded blood sacrifices and was a violent entity. And that why when YESHUA came HE spoke against the old testament. It wasn't an eye for an eye it was love your enemies. If U look into it in the old Hebrew texts it says that.

@RightOnBro725 ай бұрын
@brianlittle9202, except Mr. Yeshua didn't give the 10 Commandments, and certainly didn't support half of them. He claimed to agree with Moses, but then contradicted Moses every chance he got. He said he didn't come to abolish the law (or the prophets) but then spends his whole ministry abolishing laws (sorry, you don't abolish prophets or "prophecies" -- you wait to see if they come true -- just a meaningless side-step.) So, Mr. Yeshua claimed he'd be riding on the clouds next to the Power, which clearly means he's NOT the Power. He says he's the lamb, but the lamb is NOT the one sitting on the throne. It makes a good myth with a tragic ending, but it requires the worn-out idea of polytheism. And if it's a polytheistic religion, then Moses was wrong. Either way, Mr. Yeshua & Moses are diametrically opposed.
