I just received one of these Christ follis, and it is truly a sight to behold. It was made in around 1025-1028, and the pantocrator Christ depicted on the obverse is so cool. Love the way it reflects the Byzantine style of mosaic art which was being used at the time, complete with all the little motifs seen in those pieces of art. The hand gesture that Jesus is making, him holding the gospels, etc. Lovely coin with a fascinating history. On the obverse it reads "Emmanuel" in either Greek or Latin. On the reverse it reads "Ihsus Xristus Basileu Basile", or "Jesus Christ King of Kings" in English.

I have one such bronze coin of The Christ Pentocrator. It is a special thing to me in a symbolic way. The Romans drove nails through his hands and feet with hammer blows, now in these pieces they declare his divinity by striking the coins with hammer blows.

I was surprised to see Latin still being used on official coinage at this late date in Eastern Roman history. I thought by that point that Greek had superseded Latin in all capacities; certainly Latin would have been known by a small fraction of the populace.
@ClassicalNumismatics Жыл бұрын
It was still the main language for religious ceremonies at least, considering the "tone" of this coin, I think its understandable.

Though the solidi’s obverse was usually obverse for Christ, and the reverse used more crude details, there’s a really rare and extremely interesting coin of Constantine vii, wherein both sides used a full detailed portrait of Christ pantocrator and Constantine. It’s a beautiful coin type which was unfortunately abandoned too quickly

I have such a coin. And there are even rarer coins of Kievan Rus. In the image and likeness of the Kiev princes began to issue coins. The silver coins of St. Vladimir and Svyatopolk were issued after the baptism of Russia and cost a lot of money.

What a wonderful solidus. Verg fine specimen. The Pantocrast detail seems finer than the reverse. I do enjoy Byzantine gold.

I've got a contemporary forgery of the bronze pantocrator, which funnily enough has the text written on it in reverse. This forger must not have been very bright.

5:40 It's been a while since I was at Monreale Sicily, but I'm pretty sure that's a mosaic rather than a painting. Which is all the more astonishing.
@ClassicalNumismatics Жыл бұрын
Considering it was made in Byzantine style, this is very possible, thanks for clarifying!

@@ClassicalNumismatics Yes, that image is definitely mosaic. That's one reason the image and colors remain so well preserved.

Good video! I don't have Christ Pantocrator but I have bronze coins of Theodosius I from about 385 that include the Christogram and cross. This is quite early I think. I wonder when we have the first coin with the cross?

A "complete" medieval collection depicting Jesus Kristus has been on my list for a long time, but this is annoyingly difficult when you have 7 other collections to "uphold" - this is what keeps one from being a "proper" numismatist, a proper focus, though I consider my collection a museum of relevant important history to me. But I do have a gold histamenon depicting a shaved Jesus from ca. 1140 AD, must have been to keep up with Byzantine fashion in the 12th century! :)

There is absolutely nothing wrong with being a "universalist" collector, this wont stop you from being a proper numismatist :)
