I really like these videos. I'm from Turkey and I learned about the basics of Mesopotamian civilisations in school. But these smaller details and stories from everyday life in Mesopotamia give us a fuller picture of what it was like back then. I used to love going to the Anatolian Civilisations Museum in Ankara and would be completely mesmerised by the artefacts there. I now have a British Museum membership and go to the museum often but seeing these artefacts ripped out from where they came from (Turkey, Iraq, Iran) makes me very sad. I especially don't appreciate that they say the British Museum has 'acquired' these items when they were smuggled out of these countries by British archeologists who 'discovered' them. On the other hand, the care and attention that they have given these stolen items are exemplary. I think that the British Museum should be honest about the way they came to be in possession of Hellenic, Mesopotamian, Roman artefacts. Which was through smuggling and thievery. I can still appreciate that they cared more about these items than we could at the time they were excavated, but it's maybe time to repatriate them where possible.

Thank you for restoring the reputation of old Pazuzu. Hollywood equates good looks with good character and physical ugliness with a twisted soul, as did Shakespeare (Richard III). This is a common failing of humanity, so its good to see it refuted every now and then.
@chaosincarna6 жыл бұрын
Many villains were beautiful or handsome in Shakespeare, what are you on about?
@ckminty6035 жыл бұрын
chaosincarna I'm not sure, wasn't Richard III deformed? Anyway I do remember seeing a Roald Dahl children's story which made the same point and it bothering me because it's so foolish. Infants were already born with biases to attractiveness, do we really need writers also equating it with moral character?
@Tiger741475 жыл бұрын
That's my one complaint with Peter Jackson's LOTR trilogy. He makes all the ugly things bad and such.
@jessicalee3335 жыл бұрын
@@ckminty603 Richard III wasn't actually deformed in any way, he was relatively handsome (based on portraits - also his remains were found and show no unusual characteristics). But he was the last Plantagenet king, and the Tudors after him wanted to give him the worst reputation possible, and Shakespeare was very pro-Tudor.
@jorgepeterbarton5 жыл бұрын
Well I think that's because it is Tolkein's LOTR trilogy, just sayin. Yes, he does, dehumanising the enemy is actually sort of like a propaganda tactic. Weird when you think about how ideas like that 'good triumphing over evil monsters' are used in the past but given th time it was written WWII (and obviously something to do with it!) i'd have less qualms about those particular enemies being portrayed negatively. @@Tiger74147 a movie that got into trouble for doing that was 300 of course. Very interesting, as always with Irving Finkel. I can hardly wait for your next video. Many thanks.

I could SO he Dr. Finkel giving very detailed instructions to Ash Williams about what to say before opening the Necrnomicon, and I could imagine him scolding Ash in a very monotone voice when he screws it up.

that book is real just half of the incantations were left un translated so idiots like him in real life could never unseal all the gates....

Thank you. I wish i had more teachers like the few who were a lot like you are in your teaching here. Very disruptive and informative in your brief summary/introductory sort of history lesson. I love what you're doing and i hope you'll be doing it for quite some time. - your newest subscribing student. ^_^

What I like about Irving Finkel is that he looks like you imagine someone called 'Irving Finkel' would look like and his profession is also Irving Finkel-y. He's like a real life BPRD scientist.

Of course some of these folks are well versed in the occult. But as my grandmother told me, not everything to talk. Meaning some things, you can say and something's you should keep.
