If anything, I think it’s more likely that people will become more ageist towards our older congresspeople, regardless of mental acuity, and more ableist towards congresspeople with physical disabilities, especially the older ones. With conservative majorities in the House, Senate, Supreme Court, and White House, this ageism and ableism will most likely be leveraged against Democrat congresspeople, regardless of mental acuity. It’s tough because dementia can only be diagnosed with a brain scan or an autopsy. And it is normal to not be quite as sharp at 80 as you were at 30, even if you don’t have dementia. On top of that, incumbents are much more likely to be reelected, so the Party may favor running a failing incumbent over someone new. If I had to choose between an incompetent candidate and a malicious candidate, I’d vote for the incompetent one. It’s just a sticky situation all over!
