Ancient Greek armies employed many tactics to secure victory over their enemies. One of these tactics would not just become famous in Greece. But possibly the entire world

phalanx usually had cavalry on the flanks for a reason.
@Luluchan00
@Luluchan00 17 күн бұрын
I love the misconception that the phalanx was beaten because it was a bad tactic and not that every Hellenistic kingdom the Romans ran into was in decline with nothing but raw levies and lack of cavalry whilst the Romans were battle hardened veterans with the best logistics in the world. It turns out no tactic means shit if you have bad logistics. Pike formations worked through till the 1600s, and even after that, bayonets replaced them until fire rates improved.

Having found a couple online versions of the tale, including one from a different ancient author. The online version of Frontius is from 1925, and has a wierd and hilarious editors note: "Whozat behind you?" The other description is from a greek named Polyaenus, who Frontius was citing in his work. The description of the event specifies that the Oracle had prophesized Melanthus' victory, and in celebration of this tactic the Ionian greeks began holding the yearly Apaturia festival. There's also some commentary on an ancient greek play that talks about a version where Melanthus calls out Xanthus being accompanied by a man wearing a black goat skin, AKA the god Dionysus. I would think being told "You challenged me to single combat, then decided to bring a god to help you?" would be a very effective distraction.

I respect Greeks, not because of their way way past history. But instead, their history with Turkey. After gaining independence and still fighting them during WW1 & WW2, the madlads did something many colonized nations never did. Which is to take over the capital of their oppressors and holding that land enough to make them feel the shame after they regain it back, knowing the people they used to look down and colonized fought back and took their capital city. The Greeks achieved the dream that Korea, Ireland, Poland, and India wish to do. Also, my fellow Turks, please don't get angry. You guys were badass during the Ottoman empire, so please don't get angry and just relax.
