What a gem! A couple of years ago I avoided our overcrowded National Parks, and visited every National Monument along my route. Every one of them was a wonderful, underrated, low-key surprise! Plus, the Rangers at these NM are not crushed by crowds, but are happy to explain the value of their Monument and take the time to chat. Thanks for showing us Hovenweep!

Yes, Hovenweep was special. We learned so much and liked that it wasn't a crowded National Park which we normally avoid.

Absolutely Beautiful. Natural life of The Great Natives of This Land, is Second to None. I Wish I lived in those times. Truly.

Awesome, you’ve been to Hovenweep. I discovered this back in the 80’s when I was traveling via a 1981 Honda Accord Hatchback with a huge added on roof container that held my tent, clothes, etc. 🏕

Wonderful video. What a hard way to live. One small shift in climate, there goes the water and food supply. Thank you for sharing this, It certainly makes me pause and think about how nice and easy we do have it now.

We camped in Hovenweep in July 2019. We have a Suburban like yours and when we arrived, we were so excited to look around that my son locked the keys in the car! You know how far out in the middle of nowhere it is. Just want to let you know that you can break into a Suburban without breaking a window! BTW, One of my first videos on my channel is of drawing the landscape in colored pencil from our campground picnic table.

Your artwork is amazing! Also, you have a great eye for making beautiful photos. Get a Hide-A-Key for your Suburban so you don't get locked out again. I started using one years ago after my wife and two little girls got locked out and couldn't get help. Finally a car thief felt sorry for them and pulled a "slim jim" out of his pants and opened the door for them. Since then the extra key has saved us numerous times out in the wilds.

@@gonagain LOL Yes, Good idea! Thank you for the compliment on my art work. It's a new channel so I'm learning video production as well. I've been enjoying your videos. My husband and I plan to hit the road next year after we downsize.

Yes, you're right, it's on the state line. Gave me the impression it was in Colorado.

I throughly enjoyed it. Thank you for sharing! On the mystery of the structures, I tend to question the dating. But that's just me, I question everything the experts proclaim as gospel. Anyway, thanks again.

What amazes me about these people is the quality of the build and the innovation of the design (such as venting the fire). I grew up thinking they were heathens but learned that they were very advanced and made good use of what they had. It fascinates me.

The Cliff Dwelling cultures of the American Southwest coincided with the Medieval Warm Period. A time comparable to today's climate. A time of great crop yields and population explosions in both North America and Europe. The Little Ice Age put an end to all the prosperity and killed off millions of people in Europe and North America . Lesson? Warm good. Cold bad .

Another fun fact about the period of the Cliff Dwelling/Builder cultures . The era of building coincided with the building of the great cathedrals in Europe. In the Midwestern area of North America there was the Mound Building cultures. The Vikings discovered Vineland , but couldn't settle because Vineland natives were too numerous and strong so they settled Greenland where they lived for 300 years until the Medieval Warm Period ended , driving them back to Europe.

Rick, just saw this video. Interestingly, a number of tribes of cliff dwellers inexplicably disappeared during this time period, the 12-13 century. From southern New Mexico to Utah, the cause of their disappearance was seemingly permanent. Another mystery to contemplate...

If the native Americans didn't build it the nights of templar probably did. Many from around the world were here before Columbus n the conquistadors.
