Good evening Sarah, I'll tell you why Guatemala, Tikal and "our" Mayas are so misunderstood and sooooo underrated. Unluckily, whenever people say "Mayas" they relate the Mayas to Mexico; but, the truth is that they are totally from Tikal, El Peten Guatemala as oficially mentioned by Richard Hansen an archeologist from the University of Pennsylvania who has been studying the Mayas in Guatemala for more than 20 years. I always knew the Mayas were from Guatemala - but, it is sad that a lot of people don't know where they are from. I am totally proud to be from Guatemala and know my ancestors were really intelligent and men of science, mathematics and language. Thank you again.

*Very amazing video!!! I enjoyed it very much thank you, I myself am Guatemalan from my Fathers side born in sunny California. To aswer your question from the beginning of the video on why nobody was there, It's because Guatemala has a hard time getting through together as a whole United Nation state.... politics, foreign policys, and corruption are some of the major reasons why Guatemala hasn't been able to take advantage of their National identity and promote tourism on an International level. As another KZbinr remarked when he visited Guatemala "The national pride that hides beneath the Guatemalan jungles is absolutely mind Blowing"* *Trust me there's too much to cover on why this is going on just to give you and example...* *The giant stone head found in Guatemala was supposedly destroyed by revolutionaries but those who are up to date and know what happened in Guatemala know very well that it was ordered by foreign organizations to destroy or seize all "Unknown" Artifacts in the State of Guatemala.... The only reason anybody even Found out about the Giant stone head was because someone actually bothered to document it's discovery in their personal journal..... Guatemala has been robbed of thousands of anccient cultural artifacts if not millions... Some who have done this are the Brits, Germans, Spanish, and in more recent times the Americans and Canadians..... the messed up part is that they display it in their National Museums as trophies to reel in tourists.... Something Guatemala should be doing with those stolen Artifacts* *Too much has happened and is still happening as we speak Guatemalans are also constantly fighting off mexican traffickers who loot Guatemalan sites and bring it back to mexico claiming it was found in their national lands....* *Idk if You're husband knows but Guatemalan history has been covered up and Re-made by those who have committed these crimes against the Guatemalan community......And till this day we are still targeted, Look up the recent "Military Drills" that took place in Los Angeles the building they conducted a "Training" was indeed the Guatemalan House of Culture........ They jacked something of value not trying to sound crazy but it could even be Alien or spiritually based who knows all we know is that Guatemalan Cultural center is boarded up and locked down......* *What did the Guatemalans do to get invaded, Piliged, Puppeted, Destroyed.... and till this day enslaved to a certain degree....... I have no idea, We have many looking into this.... best we could come up with were some actions done by heads of the Guatemalan state from 1829-1965 it's something that took place back then too many "Strange" occurances happened unfortunately based on what we could gather things still dont make much since as in some parts do... it's like a broken up story.... we'll go world wide once we find out* *Thanks for sharing stay advetourous!!!*

I LOVED it there! The history and wildlife are amazing and so interesting. Check out the bestselling book Jungle of Stone by William Carlsen. It's the story of the "discovery" of the Mayan temples in 1839. At that time no one could believe that indigenous Americans could have created something so spectacular! But they did!! The greatest civilization in the world at that time. Their written language was very advanced. Curiously, the Incans and Aztecs, who came after the Mayans, did not have a written language.

Ahh Guatemala- 'tierra de una historia en curso, de colores y contrastes' I wrote this in my tourist brochure The Guatemala Experience- 1992! As a Greengo its easy to fall in luv with Guatemala as it does have a lot to offer. Yet, to answer your question while you were in Tikal (One of my favorites!) why no one there? Here in the US as a 'fat & spoiled' Westerner I know from my own Guatemalan business trying to get tourists south to Guatemala- that Tourismo is a great biz when everything 'clicks' and there is No obvious problems; but- if the Western tourists feel, hear or smell any possible thing 'out of wack' (Danger!) they don't come- they cancel and stay home- No pelotas! (My Big tour for- W. Europeans was a 4 country-2 wk tour- as they'd fly into Cancun and we'd do the Big Mayan sites around Yucatan, over to Belize- the islands and then overland to Tikal and then fly into Guate.- we'd based ourselves in Antigua and from there day trips to Atitlan, Chichi. and Xejla and finally heading south and crossing over into Copan and finishing up on Roatan island!!! Obviously the average American doesn't have this kind of time- so cater to Europeans and they're more adventurous as well!! For myself I ended up marrying a Filipina and when we get a chance its these days always back to the Philippines. But still, I have to say- Guatemala is a wonderful country and it offers much much more to see and do than almost any country I've seen. Benous surerte!
