For me it's the sheer beauty, but I suspect that Ren's ability to strip away our defenses and leave us open/vulnerable is part of it. This is one of my favorite of all performances ever. Chalk Outlines is incredible, but this one simply leaves me stunned every time.

The chemistry between those two is just stunning. And that they are keeping eye contact through most of the video, makes it even more powerful. They both feel every single line, they are singing. Chinchilla is for sure his musical sibling as they refer to one another. ❤️ If you haven't done her live performance of "fingers" yet, you will see her ability to sing, to perform and to embody the lyrics. I was watching the reaction by Chris Leipe and he was demontrating how pulling the faces were modulating/changing the tones of his voice. I think Ren was using this ad a technique . Changing the shape of his face, changed his voice.

For some real fun, watch any of the stuff by Chinchilla in her first ever busking adventure with Ren. Singing as an opening act for Sting didn’t scare her but standing outside singing for strangers had her terrified. Sexual Healing as a duet - you’ll never hear it as performed by Marvin Gaye alone again. 💜 She says she’s down to go busking again because it gave her so much confidence in herself. BTW, her fingernails are part of how she gets into what she calls her “singing character” because she tends to use her fingers a lot while performing. Once I knew that, it made sense!

Another great reaction. Since you already know the background story of Joe and Ren, this comment will be more for those in your audience who are unfamiliar with Ren. Regarding "How to Be Me," Ren's best friend, Joe Hughes, committed suicide on the 27th of December, 2010 by jumping off the Menai Bridge, a large suspension bridge connecting the mainland to the Isle of Anglesey where Ren and Joe lived. Ren alluded to it in one of his songs, stating that he lost his best friend before he was 25. The pain of this loss is evident in a few of his songs. "How to Be Me," "Freckled Angels" and his latest release, "Suic*de" are specifically dedicated to Joe. Some people have claimed that the video was shot at the bridge that Ren's friend jumped from, however, that is misinformation according to some Brighton residents. Ren recently posted some background on his relationship with Joe and the tragic suicide. Ren explained that he got a call from his friend Ella around 3 am saying that Joe was the Menai Bridge, He’d been on the phone with her in tears saying goodbye. He told her to tell everyone he loved them. Ren went out on foot attempting to get to Joe while trying to reach him on the phone. Just minutes before Ren got to the bridge, his friend's cell phone went out of service. The Coast Guard started a search to no avail. Ren, friends, and volunteers unsuccessfully searched the shoreline for ten days; Joe’s body was never recovered. Ren’s and Chinchilla’s live performance of "Chalk Outlines" is still my favorite song, partly because I can relate to it more given my daily struggles. Although, losing one’s best friend to suicide is also something I experienced when I was 19 y/o (almost 38 years ago). “How to Be Me” definitely runs a close second, though. I would recommend you check out their busking sessions in Brighton, performing “Sexual Healing” (Marvin Gaye cover) and “One Dance / Drunk In Love” (Drake/Beyoncé cover); those performances are of a much lighter mood and very enjoyable. I hope you will continue to dive into Ren's and Chinchilla's catalogs.

🫂🫂 you should check out Chinchilla's work I would start with the Fingers live I would say also do the Fingers video because the artistry in it and the storytelling in it is worth the watch even though it isn't as vocally impactful as the live.
