Chinchilla says she wears long fingernails for confidence when she performs. I don’t usually like them but, for me, this makes me like her even more. Her reasoning makes them the opposite of artificial. So don’t feel freaked out!! Anyway, I really enjoy your reactions. Hope you are having a good Christmas x

Chinchilla's nails aren't for looks if you mean style. Her real name is Daisy & she's actually very shy. She says the nails help her get into the character of Chinchilla by giving her confidence & feel more powerful. There are a couple busking videos of she & Ren. Apparently she was really afraid to do it but Ren convinced her &, of course, she was great. And BTW, she isn't wearing the nails in those videos.

I think he is talking about when the doctors prescribe medication for illness, very freely. " Try this one, come back, if it doesn't work." Then they prescribe something else. Over medicating, having to deal with side effects. Misdiagnosis, etc. The chalk outline to me, is how you feel, being over medicated. Terrible. Like the "walking dead". Hence "chalk outline " Out of it. I relate to this song and Ren's experience with autoimmune disease and misdiagnosis. The hell of living with chronic illness, pain and fatigue. I'm walking in the same shoes. I love this song, because it puts into words, what i feel and cannot voice. So thank you Ren ❤

Many thanks Judson for the beautiful piano intro - nice reminder of my favorite songs (by any musician) - I've listened since I was 14 in 1977 and over time, I have learned to appreciate so many more aspects of the music and the lyrics. And its so nice to have you play a bit of the Chalk Outlines chords as well. Well done gentlemen, really enjoy your reactions and discussions. Keep up the good work.

No need to be freaked out by the nails in this one, she's his echo. He's in the basement of a psych unit, someone practising guitar in their lunch hour left the door open to the cellars where the archives are kept.

Every time I watch it's like "join in on the piano!" Ha On Chinchillas nails- she's said they give her power & make her able to sing with passion without care. I've played keys (very rudimentary stuff like starlight by muse) with pretty long claws but I could never keep them short enough to play guitar at all well, just strings humming against them all the time. I absolutely see my meds as a crutch especially for the fact I go into withdrawing without them but they make it so I can get up & face the day. Between the mental illness & chronic pain I fell like I'm just walking around half dead at times.

I get what you are saying about this version not being like a different song but for those of us who heard the live version first, the studio version is like a different inferior song because it sounds sped up and canned by comparison. It doesn’t have some of Chinchilla’s more experimental harmonies, however, which is an advantage I agree.

Still Waiting for you guys to ask “why is the artist making this decision?, and then “does this work toward making their point or not?”, as I pointed out in your Happier Than Ever by Billie Eilish video. Y’all are missing out on so much, it seems like you aren’t intellectually or artistically curious at all. Once again, I’d encourage y’all expand beyond “I like this or don’t like this,” to “why is this artist making this choice? And how does this work or doesn’t work considering the message they are trying to communicate?” Not to be harsh, but y’all really do come across as first year art students, and that’s really sad.
@judsong8 ай бұрын
We did ask those questions. In every aspect mentioned, we speculate whether or not its bolstering the thesis of the song, whatever that truly may be. The records seen in the beginning, hair fingernails, the clothing, the setting, even the fact that the very lyrical offering has a significant pause after it (etc); all of these things are considered as having some kind of correlation to the artist’s intended message. This is a fact we assume the viewer is aware of as many viewers have been with us for a time. In every conversation we have, we ask, as you so kindly point out, “why is the artist doing this?” Every one. Sometimes the conversation goes into further subtext and other times we stay on the surface. After reading your critique twice, I am beginning to wonder whether you are even watching the videos to make this obviously misguided opinion. However, thank you for that opinion and we hope you have a wonderful day.
@cultivatinggrace8 ай бұрын
@@judsong I agree that you did ask what are the records about? What do the white clothes mean? But if we tracked the amount of time asking those questions vs the commentary about not liking her nails, the time spent would reveal the emphasis. Part of asking “why?” is also imagining and speculating about the answers to that question. Of course you’re welcome to critique my critique of your critique, but I really do hope you continue to experiment with the furthering of your conversations and explorations of your discussions. I do agree this was an improvement above other video reactions, and applaud you for that, but I assure you that I have been watching your videos all the way through, and do see room for improvement. Take that as you like it. Thank you for considering what I’m saying, it’s clear you care. Best wishes to both of you as well.
@judsong8 ай бұрын
And to you..
@cultivatinggrace8 ай бұрын
@@judsong I really do offer these critiques in a good faith effort to help y’all create more impactful and meaningful reaction videos. Obviously you have plenty of positive responses and can enjoy them and disregard what I’m saying. I do think this might have struck a nerve because there’s possibly some degree of truth in what I’m saying. I don’t think I hold the entire truth, and you’re always able to disregard my input, but I really am coming from a place of wanting to hear the much deeper inquiry that I believe you both to be capable of for works like these. I encourage you both to continue to explore the “why this choice?” more in your reactions. Do/don’t like, and rules/break the rules commentary is worth noting, but the real meat for non-layperson reactions is in exploring the “why?”. Not just asking why, but adding insight about the possibilities of why and how the artist’s choices contribute to the outcome of the piece, and if you consider it successful in communicating their message, or unsuccessful. I don’t know why I’m so invested in your channel in particular doing a more comprehensive exploration of this, vs some other channels, except that I can tell y’all have the background that equips you to explore these things much more than a casual, untrained listener. I really do wish y’all well, and hope you can take my criticism in the spirit that it’s meant.

To be fair, you see the fingernails before you hear the performance - if you’re going through things sequentially, it’s a logical starting point.

They're there specifically to be noticed, and are her way of separating/distancing herself from the audience so to speak, to help her feel comfortable to perform. NOT noticing them on first viewing would actually be against what she's going for. Check out some interviews. PS: this isn't Chinchilla hate by any stretch, I think she's an incredible singer and has a unique style that makes a statement, which many TRY to pull off, but she executes very well.
@kellyt53418 ай бұрын
You forgot to put your (sarc) after the sentence. Sounds like he was annoyed he had to do the same song twice because in his mind there was no difference. The live performance was acknowledged but it was not worth re-doing in his opinion. He didn't say it in those words but he was still saying it in his round about way. That was my take anyways. This one is leaps and bounds more impactful than the studio version, but I'm just a fan.
@StantonMoira8 ай бұрын
The performance was beautiful and amazing. I wish people would leave her alone about her nails. Sheesh. Of ALL the things to analyze, you spent more depth on your feelings about her fingernails versus the song. I fell like your reaction to this song was lukewarm at best. They were singing about a friend who committed suicide by drugs due to depression. Because (like lots of people) the person was traumatized in life and was a chalk outline. Disliked this reaction intensely.
