The History of the "Democratie Athenienne", Athenian Democracy, finds its philosophical home in ancient Greece. The "Attische Demokratie" finds its breath in the life work of Solon, one of the greatest Greek philosophers and sages ever. Long before Plato, Aristotle or Socrates; Solon stepped onto the scene with a radical vision for debt cancellation, democratic reconciliation and law and order for the city of Athens. At Solon's core however, is the story of a man who recognized how to own nothing and still be happy. What we need is a definition of what he meant, and how you or I will impact the world when we recognize the value of the virtue of moderation.
Join us as we take a closer look at the life and ethos of Solon the ancient sage of Athens and seek to understand his perspective on how to be happy.

Didn't he also say, 'learn to obey and you learn to command' and 'Knowing, keep silence'? Those take some explaining too. I am intrigued by his bravery and his approval of looking to the transcendent.

Wow, great video. Thank you. Like others, I never heard of Solon and after watching this video I'm more curious about him. You also got me hooked to listen to more of your channel too. (I found this channel with a search of Solon after listening to Randall Carlson who recited one of Solon's poems.) -- Solon documented his chat with an Egyptian who informed Solon of islands west and a continent.... Thank you again.

Minor correction: the kingdom of Lydia was not on an island but in mainland Anatolia or modern day Turkey.

Will you have another episode where you explain how Solon did that without being immediately assassinated?

Great question Victor, we could do four episodes on each character we've talked about because there is so much to say! You're absolutely right; Solon was such an enigmatic and principled leader that he must have had significant opposition. It's remarkable that he ruled for as long as he did. The short answer is that when we look at historical narrative, we can look at what happened and what didn't. The rest is left to conjecture and theory, which is a lot more complicated. Therefore, we can't explain how he wasn't immediately assassinated. However, we can say that Solon was from nobility, served as a successful military commander (The Megara Saga), and was elected eponymous archon. He was popular when he came into power, and however controversial his reforms were, they never warranted an assassination or an overthrow of his rule. In fact, many of them warranted preservation in Athenian society as these reforms arguably stand as the foundations of Athenian democracy. A system that has stood the test of time even today. Hope this helps! -The MP Creative Team
