Wonder how an updated (lighter weight) polearm would fare. Change the balance so it is closer to a bo, and you have reach with better defense.

The ‘ JǏ ‘ is one of those weapons that just looks like it would be nasty to fight against. A spearhead with a wicked blade that both hooks and cuts?! I’m not fighting someone armed with that, unless I have a substantial pole-arm of my own! 😅
@lolasdm695910 ай бұрын
In Ancient China there was a speacialized buckler with two hooks which can hook onto the Ji and basically nullify it completely. Elite light infantry would use that and a sword to break through the Ji frontline.

@@Intranetusa He used a spear, not a Ji specifically, it's only effective against the likes of Ji or similar helberds.
@Intranetusa9 ай бұрын
@@lolasdm6959 The Ji is a spear with a dagger-axe head attached. The spear, Ji, glaive, European halberd, etc. all have the same leverage advantage over shorter weapons/equipment because they're all polearm weapons. The top and bottom hooks of the Gou Rang will still be at a big leverage disadvantage against the Ji - no different than a spear. So the Gou Rang will still need to catch or slide down the Ji with its middle spike to have sufficient leverage to counter the polearm leverage.

Part of me has been wanting a Ji for my own sparring. The weapon came back to my attention when I was looking for ancient weapons to include in a story
I have heard that the leverage of the pole arm is sufficient that a one hand sword parry cannot stop an overhead strike. You should test this. A butt spike would possibly change things when the swordsman gets close.

That weapon is too long for the space they have. I think it may have performed better if there was more space. You'll notice he couldn't really swing his polearm in a wide arc without hitting the walls.

Indeed, it's necessary to look threatening and intimidating to your opponents before you, especially against to two or three opponents. That's the best one person could do to fend them off.

In a two-on-one fight, don’t separate so much. You’re turning it into two one-on-one fights. And the pole weapon has the advantage there.

Wouldn't it be easier for the polearm if they stay closer though? If they are on opposite sides, he can only give point to one at a time. Not correcting you, I'm just exchanging thoughts.

Slapping someone with the side of a pole even if there is a blade on the end isn't going to do diddly squat against even a lightly armoured opponent. The guy with the pole had a huge reach advantage and should have been aggressively attacking while outside the range of his opponent and should have focused on staying outside of katana range at all times. However he demonstrated zero skills. At least the swordsmen demonstrated some good parrying at times.
@SilverforceX10 ай бұрын
That pole has a spear & horizontal blade, if it was a real weapon that slap would have gone right through light armor (padding).
@willnitschke10 ай бұрын
@@SilverforceXBullsh*t. I've trained both in pole and katana. All you can achieve with a blade on the end of a pole is a light slap. 😂

@@willnitschke I'm pretty sure they've moved up to use actually steel blunted weapons for practice, so I think their playing it safe, since it's something new it seems of the channal. I'd like to see more longer range weapons, or something fun and ridiculous, an archer fighting defensively in very close quarters with a short bow and knife or short sword, or along with a small buckler shield with maybe 3 opponents.
