@@MinotaurvsCyclops WHAT ?????? Nobody puts up 405 lbs without “lifting”. I don’t care how much gravel you push around or how much jack hammering you do all day. You have to hit the gym quite a bit to bench press 405lbs. That is a lottttt of weight! Especially for the average person. 400+ is BIG BOY territory. I defy you to ask someone his relative size that doesn’t train to lift that much weight…AND… he did it relatively easy and could have went even heavier probably. I get the guy who did the bar bend and deadlift was a beast but the bench guy is also. 💪

I grew up in the Masonry business. I started carrying bricks, blocks and stone, mixing cement and pushing it in a wheelbarrow and carrying it in 5 gallon buckets. I also had to transfer those materials up scaffolding in 5' increments. All my friends belonged to a gym and we all took physical fitness in high school, basically running and lifting weights every day. My record still stands. 184 lb. senior bench press 405. Lifting weights is great, but in my situation, I was lifting and moving using little muscles here and there that you can't get to with a barbell. We also mixed mortar that didn't come in bags premixed. I grabbed 70 lb. bags of Portland cement with my thumb and forefinger and flung them on top of the mixer. Usually two bags, 10 gallons of water and 40 42 shovels of sand. Then into a wheelbarrow pushed to wherever. I am not bragging! I am just trying to give context to this event, I don't know what trades these guys were in if at all. I don't think any were in mechanical trades or operators.
@susanss70spartymix77Ай бұрын
Yeah, people don't realize how hard some construction workers work. When I was a young lad the industry used 40Kg bags of cement. You would be moving two bags at once most of the day. You stick your arms out and they pop it on them for you. You walk with it across horrible unstable ground and sometimes over a plank and up stairs. If you knew it was only an hour or two job, we'd take three bags at a time. Day in day out and carrying heavy buckets etc. What we found normal would wreck most people, but you just get used to it. What it did for grip strength was incredible. Even now at close to 60 years old and working in a lab instead of a site, I play with the younger guys at work. 25-35 year old's who work out and they have no chance. For shits and giggles I tell them I'm almost 80 years old lol.
@godking_ginge21 күн бұрын
Had a similar job in Dryvit back in the day. We didn't mix cement but "mud" and did the same scaffolding transfers after building the scaffolding. It's hard to quantify the work until you've done it. It's no joke! This was 20+ years ago and to this day I still advocate for kids fresh out of HS to hit up jobs like this instead of the traditional fast food "starting" points.
@sammiches6859Күн бұрын
I made the fateful decision of beginning a career in commercial HVAC last summer. I've had to lift 80lbs compressors, evaporator coils, my tool bag, refrigerant tanks, recovery tanks, my recovery machine, a vacuum pump, buckets with parts, and my oxy/ace torch all 25 ft up the side of a building in one go while it was 99 degrees in humid Missouri heat. Sometimes, I'd do this twice in one day at different sites, which also includes lowering each of these items. I'd work up to 17 hours on a single shift, and by the time I got home, I might be lucky to get 5 hours of sleep before I had to get up to be at the next job by 8am. Before all of this, I sharpened knives and sold guns at Bass Pro. I'm not as strong as some of these guys in the video, but I'm a hell of a lot stronger than I was this time last year.

Nah. It’s just practical vs aesthetic. Proper work boots beat tennis shoes every day. Muscles built through labor beat gym built every day. Not saying body builders aren’t strong. But when you’re focused on aesthetics and numbers, you don’t necessarily build out the stabilizers quite as much, simply because you don’t have to. When I worked an office job, I threw my back out regularly and struggled with deadlifts in the gym. Now I work in event production and it’s like half deadlifting and then carrying…and I haven’t thrown my back out in years despite no gym time. 🤷♀️ Everyone is awesome here though. Well done.

Yeah he's probably been lifting for strength in the gym longer than all of the bodybuilders have been bodybuilding, and with the obvious assistance of steroids. Kind of dumb and a total gimmick to be like "hurr durr look at that construction worker strength!!!!" - because it's not. It's powerlifting gym strength. The dude's vocation has literally nothing to do with anything. The guy lifts 400+ because he lifts IN THE GYM for strength / powerlifting AND carries around ~30% body fat to maximize his strength (also conveniently lowering his range of motion). May as well be "bodybuilders vs accountants" and then pick an accountant who is also a gym powerlifting nut, but be like 'wow that accountant strength!!!!"

Construction workers "work"? They just stand around all day drtinking soda and blocking traffic, machines do all the work fo rthem
@cobrazoid5 ай бұрын
@@Tom-hr1cmYour argument is so ignorant. You are saying construction workers don’t “work” because of machinery they operate instead of by hand. I have read your last other comment said that mail man work “harder”. I can say the same about mail man that they don’t “work” because they drive a mail truck instead of walking on foot because they can drive from point A to point B less than 40 minutes compared to walking. Your argument is just stupid. And besides, construction workers don’t block traffic all day, do you want to have better road conditions while driving or not? So that is why they block temporary. And plus, you are living inside a house built by construction workers, why not you just go live outside then if that is what makes you happy.

Some blue collar workers are unbelievably strong. I'm an engineer and was once on a job site that required a 1,100lb I-beam being moved 106ft up a 55 degree incline of loose gravel. My team and I were getting the infrastructure in place to bring in the necessary equipment for a hoist and pulley system that would drag the steel up the hill. The foreman informed us that this wasn't necessary, and made a phone call. A few mins later a man walked into the trailer office who resembled a juiced up silverback gorilla. He introduced himself as Mike and told us it would be no problem to get the job done. Mike and one of his almost equally large co workers got this I-beam on a sled they had improvised from some welded metal plate, attached cable and looped it over their waists and shoulders. They then proceeded to walk/crawl it up the hill to the top. When you understand the math involved in pulling that off, it is awe inspiring.

So the guy gets there and he's enormous and in talking bigger than a double door smart fridge he was huge and his mate that was with him was equally enormous. I told him my problem I was having and no word of a lie he looks at me and goes why did you just pick it up and I'm like I don't have a fork lift? Next thing him and his friend walk over to it and simply pick the front up drag it to the trailer and rest the front on it,then they walk to the rear and lift the thing off the ground and just push it on.i was in disbelief I'm decently strong and have worked with cars my entire life,I have never seen anyone do that and I haven't seen it happen since if I never witnessed it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it.
