Those cantilevers are huge! I love them! A throwback to when things were definitely overbuilt. I guess that was a Seaboard Coast Line thing; there's a couple of similar sets around here in eastern North Carolina on CSX or former Seaboard tracks, but there aren't a lot of four-lane highways with at-grade crossings around here. I don't think there are any on the A-line.

Ahh the good old days, when things were overbuilt, with craftsmanship and they spared no expense! One of my subscribers told me (I can't remember if it was SC or NC) there's a law that doesn't allow for abandoned rails to be removed. Have you heard of that?
@michaeljohnson7493
@michaeljohnson7493 3 жыл бұрын
@@railrol82 Not sure of a law, but I know NCDOT's preference is to railbank. They bought a few corridors in the late 80s but it was really too late as most of the track that disappeared from NC was gone before then. It doesn't stop railroads from letting the remainder rust away, though; the well-known Saluda Grade is the clearest example, taken out of service in 2001. There are more than a few others in the state that are in danger of becoming weedways, too.

@@michaeljohnson7493 But a weedway is ok because, if need be, it can still be restored right?

Amazing piece of history! I really like the way how crossings are composed of components from different manufacturers! Fascinating documentation my friend!

Thats a pretty advanced crossing for being ancient, considering all the no turn lights as well, most modern crossing on tracks parallel to roads dont have those lights on the corners. Looks like Seaboard took their safety seriously

I always wondered why these types of cantilevers are so huge, are they supposed to be tornado-proof? Do you know who made them btw?
@jaredg4519
@jaredg4519 7 жыл бұрын
You were right about the former Bird Road crossing, It's likely that this cantilever is also a WRRS product. Now that I mention it, do you remember the old signals on the FEC Downtown Line before the upgrades in 2013? Back in the 1980s the FEC installed a whole bunch of equipment similar to the ones in the video on the Downtown Line. Here at a few: www.google.com/maps/@25.8325413,-80.1882792,3a,49.4y,81.4h,88.01t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s7oRy1MboXOLuZeI7JnCeBw!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 www.google.com/maps/@25.8040283,-80.1923225,3a,75y,293.06h,88.79t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s0OLKsCo0cCPeEUQ8rARl1A!2e0!7i13312!8i6656 www.google.com/maps/@25.7837068,-80.1964511,3a,47.6y,85.57h,88.98t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1s9hi6xZcoSK5vmotLyCOS5w!2e0!7i13312!8i6656
