It's a very special episode of Time Team News tonight, as we introduce the Finds Shed, Dani's new space for investigating the latest discoveries. Dani is joined by John Gater to hear more about Sutton Hoo, and Guy de la Bédoyère who discusses life in Ancient Rome. We also look at ancient rituals in Classical Mesoamerica, and the rediscovery of military defences once described by Julius Caesar.
Plus, we share a very preview of our upcoming 3-part community dig episodes, heading to KZbin very soon!

As I listen to Guy talking about the contents of his books, I'm thinking of the accuracy of Lindsey Davis' stories of Marcus Didius Falco, a Roman investigator who gets in/out of all manner of scrapes. Her depiction of ancient Rome is so full of the details of which Guy just touches on, so perhaps a bit of her background on ancient Rome might be included somewhere in the future???

How about the story from the Isle of Skye about the uncovering of a lost 17th C. village during tree felling at Glen Brittle? Seems they uncovered everything from houses to kilns etc. Wondering what else they discovered?

During a visit to Culloden last June I was thrilled to see an actual dig in progress! One of the archaeologists explained the reason for several test pits and told us he was actually standing on the Ice age! The museum on site is under pressure for the sacred battlefield to be used for commercial and residential purposes and they conduct a dig every year to dissuade officials from claiming the sacred site where so many lost their lives. I encourage members to visit.

Dear Time Team, I want to become a patron of your programme. I absolutely love it. The problem is I never buy anything on the internet because I fear I will be robbed. It seems to me I'm not alone in people of my generation, who recall the excitement that rippled through the community when someone had a phone installed in their house. It was practically front page news 😂. Anyway, sometimes family and friends will ask what I'd like for Christmas, or my birthday. Have you a Scheme whereby Time Team patreon can be bought as birthday or Christmas gifts for loved ones by their friends and family and, if not, don't you think it's a good idea?

I think a book club could be interesting. It depends on how it is done. It might work really well on your Patreon, but I know us who can't be on Patreon (for one reason or other) would still like to participate...of course one of the reasons for not joining Patreon would likely prevent participation in this book club...I still encourage it.

Interesting about the ideas of the Mesoamerican findings. Farther north, in the US and possibly into Canada, tobacco is a common offering, usually dried and chopped. It is scattered during a prayer. Tobacco was also a common component of the "black drink" often used by southeastern tribes. Sweat lodges were, and still are, commonly associated with ritual preparation for more formal ceremonies.

How about doing a regular feature on chosen archeology societies throughout the UK either as a news feature or short update on the last year’s activities. It could give the local areas publicity and show what they are doing with their time take Star Carr for example in Flixton near Scarborough, North Yorkshire. East Hesleton also nearby.

I wonder if the mysterious mushroom shaped thing might have been used for sewing or shaping leather. It looks similar to a tool I remember in the shoe repair shop when I was a kid. It's difficult to judge the size as the objects aren't to scale, but I think the repairman's tool it was 4 or 5 inches across. Of course I was a only a kid so everything seemed bigger. I was always fascinated by all his tools. I think he hammered leather on its curve with a small mallet.
