To be fair they didn't destroy the buildings when they looked like this, the baths for example stopped working in the 6th century when the aqueducts were destroyed and then they were abandoned and overgrown, earthquakes toppled columns and walls and from that was scavenged material to build churches and housing. Don't forget the people of medieval Rome were living in one vast ruin of a city built for a population of a million not the ten thousand or so by that point, they just needed to survive so saving non working, crumbling ruins that had once been a bathhouse would have made no sense.

@lastmanstanding-xp3ub
@lastmanstanding-xp3ub Ай бұрын
Veneers of only the highest quality, most perfectly cut and oriented white Marble adorned every single building if it was befitting of that specific type of structure and was attributed to a Caesar, usually inside AND outside. In fact, even sections of the Cloaca in certain st;retches, which is the SEWER if you dont know the terminology, had (and still have) f*cking white marble floors lol. Some buildings were accented outside and/or inside with REAL GOLD, and not like little tiny accents, like POUNDS of the stuff on a single building that was adorned with it as a cosmetic element. Every single building built out of stone, concrete, etcetera was practically PERFECTLY melded with the seam, next to, above, and/or below it, to the point that not even paper fits in the area where the blocks and/or sections of concrete end and begin, indicating that the standards for the level of precision, consistency, and tediousness for EVERY single detail on most/all buildings being built would have likely been unfathomable to us almost if we were to be somehow transported back and able to observe the fitment process and how small their margin of error was (and how they did it exactly with certainty) while building and also have the chance to witness the entire building 100% damage/wear-free and free of any potential shifting or settling as well. Rome would have been awe-inspiring in all or even most of its full glory even if compared to the most impressive modern cities I would say, we simply DO NOT do that type of mega-public works with that type of wealth and luxury being shown off blatantly and "just cause" as the reason for the Gold adornments and artwork carvings and sculptures that are so minute you can still make out the Chain mail loops on Auxiliary troop armor depictions in the scenes present on Trajans Column these days anymore.

Magnificent work! Congratulations. I would like to add that most of the destruction of the great Imperial buildings was carried out by the fanatical Christians and later on, in a more methodical manner, by the Catholic Church, determined to erase any vestiges of the old Roman civilization. For a well-documented description of that process I recommend Catherine Nixey´s book "THE DARKENING AGE"
@historyin3d
@historyin3d 11 ай бұрын
I would recommend reading the Nixey´s book only in the context of other studies. This book is VERY biased and contains a number of very arbitrary generalizations. For a REALLY well-documented description of that process it is necessary to begin with the fundamental works of Lanciani and Gregorovius, and then follow the path of main studies of Roman topography till our time. Thank you for your kind words about our project!
