Ancient Sicily & the Valley of Temples

During the 4th Century BC, Sicily was the "new Greece" of the west. Our journey will take us to the various cultural centers that dotted the island, such as Syracuse, Agrigento, with the exquisite Valley of the Temples, and Selinus, present-day Selenunte.
The Valle dei Templi (English: Valley of the Temples, Sicilian: Vaddi di li Tempri) is an archaeological site in Agrigento (ancient Greek Akragas), Sicily, southern Italy. It is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture, and is one of the main attractions of Sicily as well as a national monument of Italy. The area was included in the UNESCO Heritage Site list in 1997. Much of the excavation and restoration of the temples was due to the efforts of archaeologist Domenico Antonio Lo Faso Pietrasanta (1783--1863), who was the Duke of Serradifalco from 1809 through 1812. The archaeological park and landscape of the Valley of the Temples is the largest archaeological site in the world with 1,300 hectares.
The term "valley" is a misnomer, the site being located on a ridge outside the town of Agrigento.
This temple was constructed on a mostly artificial spur. It dates to c. 450 BC, measuring 38.15 x 16.90 m: it is in Doric style, peripteros 6 columns wide by 13 long, preceded by a pronaos and opisthodomos. The basement has four steps.
Current remains (including anastylosis from the 18th Century onwards) consist of the front colonnade with parts of the architrave and of the frieze. Only fragments of the other three sides survive, with few elements of the cella. The building was damaged in the fire of 406 BC and restored in Roman times, with the substitution of clay marble roof tiles with ones and the addition of a steep rise in the area where today can be seen the remains of the altar.
Nearby are arcosolia and other sepultures from Byzantine times, belonging to the late 6th century AD renovation of the Temple of Concordia into a Christian church.

My maternal great-grandfather Calogero immigrated from Sicily and never became a citizen in New York, he settled in the Bronx, married my great-grandma Mary O'Connor (an Irish immigrant) and I am still in the Bronx raising my children. I recently did my DNA and apparently I am strongly linked to the region closest to Mount Etna. This is really interesting to watch, thank you!

Sicily was thrown into poverty by Napoleon's conquest of the Southern part of Italy and removing any vestige of Norman rule that still was present under the Aragonese Rule. 800 years of art, various architecture styles, mosaics, Spanish Baroque, Cuisine, literature, etc... ruined by his Arrogant ruler (Corsican ruffian). Resulted in the Mafiusi writings, which led to the resistance movement Mafia against oppression and the feudal state, which in turn produced the same problem as it was trying to get rid. Prior feudal states under the Normans were never very oppressive since the administrative class was Arabic at the time, and later English Clergy, then Austrian Lords, etc.... Only the early Roman conquests were oppressive to those who resisted their rule and conquest. It was rumored that the original Sicilain word meant Morte al Francese in Italia. But it also comes from Refuge in Arabic.

"1" of the serious mistakes in preparing education purposed history books, is taking the "judgemental assumptions and accusations of one people/country towards another" and applying that as fact. Very much a tragic application of information taught. It is common that 2 people or 2 people's, at war or at uncooperative existance, will apply "their personal ego" to the story. One must wonder - they must have PO the Romans for us to have such little info on their origination and where they wandered - I have a theory that they may likely have influenced the Basque, Irish, Berbers, Cherrokee, and Iroquois Native Americans. Quite possibly - one of the Original Tribes of Israel - and they may have provided transportation for another - the Danites - whom in turn taught them "Metalworking" i.e. including Goldsmithing. Its a hypothesis - worthy of Theory, at any rate.
