Posca was a popular drink among ancient Roman soldiers and poor peasants. It was usually made by watering down low-quality wine and then adding spices to make it taste better. The Roman legions used to receive a lot of vinegar in their rations. The soldiers used to add water to the vinegar to turn it into drinkable posca. Water sanitation in those times was sub-standard and normal drinking water was usually contaminated. This only added to posca’s popularity as its acidity killed most of the germs and kept the drink from early stagnation. The Roman legions were known to carry huge barrels of posca wine during their military campaigns. Drinking good wine while in the army was seen as bad form and undisciplined, so high-ranking generals would drink posca with the troops to show their dedication to the legion. Even the great Hadrian drank posca when on campaign to show his men he was one of them. The ancient Romans were inexplicably fond of sauces and spices with their meals. For the poor Romans, meals were bland and consisted of the boiled paste of available staples like wheat, barley, and vegetables. So adding a little sauce and spice into the mix helped them have a cuisine that excited the taste buds. Again, a rich Roman’s dining habits included pretty much every popular variety of sauce and exotic spice he could purchase. Roman senators complained that their women used too many Indian spices and luxuries, which drained the Roman Empire of precious metal. Pliny the Elder, in 77 AD, called India “the sink of the world's gold!” Pliny the Elder (23 AD - 79 AD) - described a considerable financial deficit because of Rome's trade with the East. The Empire had been running a trade deficit of 100 million sesterces per year for the import of luxury goods (half of that astonishing figure was destined to India alone!)

It’s fantastic that a more than two thousand years old historical coin like the Alexander tetra drachma can be had for 600$ in nice condition! And the same can be said for the Athenian owl.

I have found some ancient coins in a storage locker last year . Some aren't too valuable but we found a receipt from the early 90s when this business owner in silicon valley was doing pretty good . The receipt was for 2,200 dollars or so and my partner and I split the collection 50/50 . Have a couple coins from other units that I need to have checked out . They are similar to the ones in this video and I seem to remember one has an owl on it . Just got an 1886 Morgan as a surprise plus the other guys involved in the unit owed me the rent for it so I got a gold ring also . Gladly take gold instead of paper most times .

@@JuniusMaltby Well I don't really do f book but I can email some pictures I think . I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 Active and things have changed since I bought this phone . In my business I usually text photos but I think I or my better half can easily figure out how to upload photos onto an email attachment . I have tried with this phone and the Xfinity app that I have has absolutely no way to send attachments but that's not set in stone yet but I have tried everything to no avail in 5 years . Probably need a 9 year old to figure it out , haha . I can show you all the ancient coins I have found this last decade or so . I love history and I have found so much interesting things that send me down so many different paths of learning , it's the main reason I buy units other than trying to find gold and silver and making a living . The photo albums I have found , man o man . Some are full of amazing snapshots of the past like WWI WWII and so many American and world events and places from the 1870s on up with some maybe older . Love it !

Hi there, thanks for an interesting video. Got some ideas for you. The art involved in these coins is truly beautiful. Found this: www.ngccoin.com/news/article/8234/NGC-Ancient-Greek-Coins/ Golden fleece = could have been about the knowledge of how to extract gold from streams. Primitive sluice boxes. The Fleece would turn to gold and they would just melt the whole thing i guess. Theres lots of dophins, one with a boy at the Embankment in London. When you start looking at statues and fountains theres lots of symbolism involved and its fascinating. Merfolk, Triton, Nimrod being the god of ocean, current, currency (money) and going all the way back to the abundant Fish gods Found out that I have a connection with Oracle of Delphi and have been looking into that. My sir name is Sibley, so im a Sybil which is cool. All the best, kieron

Awesome. I enjoyed them . I have some originals I’ll be discussing as well . Many of mine are Roman Denarius . I’d like to one day have some original Greek, especially a tetradrachm .

@@JuniusMaltby Awesome. The denarius is a fascinating subject to pursue that was around since about 300-200 B.C. during the Roman republic. I have some videos about the coins of the Roman republic. It is interesting how the mythological scenes morph into putting an emperors portrait in for hundreds of years. The denarius was eventually supplanted by the Antoninianus (a "double denarius" which had the weight of about 1.5 original weight denarius coins. Eventually you do get silver "washed" or basically silvered bronzes which were a tiny fraction of the original silver content. That is why an emperor like Gordian III coins are plentiful as they got supplanted by the debased coinage and were hoarded as the people were not stupid to spend the better silver when you could spend the debased coinage. Keep up the great work my friend!
