Ralston College presents the inaugural lecture of its Chancellor, Dr Jordan B Peterson, delivered at one of the most iconic sites of the ancient world, the Library of Celsus in Ephesus. This ancient city was the birthplace of Heraclitus, the philosopher who first articulated the idea of the Logos, and the final resting place of St. John, who uses that same Greek word to name the Divine Word. In his lecture, Dr Peterson argues that the intelligibility of the world depends on the patterned regularities that are superordinate to our immediate perception; this underlying order - which, from the Greeks onward, we have called Logos - is both the horizon that enables human perception and the basis for the possibilities that we realize in the world. Such an account of our intrinsic, rational, and self-determining capacity constitutes a challenge to the assumptions of many prevailing schools of thought - such as behaviorism, rigid empiricism, and postmodernism - and lays the burden of personal ethics, and the formation of a good society, squarely on the shoulders of the individual.

Also, the bible clearly says that whoever doesn’t declare he is with Jesus, is not with him. So your claim that “he is doing just fine” makes no sense. King Celsus built the new city out farther as the sea access moved out due to earthquakes and silting up of canal access. Pray with a sincere heart, pursue Him with a sincere heart. As He says, Knock and the door will open. There's many testimonies of people all over the world, of many different backgrounds and belief systems who've cried out to Jesus in the dark depths of their lowest despair in their lives. All people are called to Christ, sadly most don't respond or are tepid in their belief. When Jesus is allowed to enter your heart and control your life, you will definitely become a different person. I visited Ephesus twenty years or so ago, but in daytime. It was an amazing time, being in a place mentioned in the Bible and part of the development of Humankind. Whilst in Turkey, I read that the Turkish people love it when tourists speak their language, so on the last of several visits to an excellent restaurant we visited several times during our stay, I said whatever the word is, (can't remember it now), that translates as 'Thank you for your hospitality'. The waitress was delighted and went out back and brought all the other waiters and the chefs out and they all shook my hand and we all took photos of each other. How easy it is for people of different cultures and different countries to unite. We are all human, sharing a beautiful planet. Let's start now, how we would like our children to continue on.

Humans were made in the image of God. What does "image" mean? Dr Michael Heiser has done a deep dive and produced the most accurate IMHO meaning of "image". Short version is we are images or imagers/representatives of God on Earth. Each of us is made by God for a purpose although mankind likes doing things their own way, not God's. Where Heiser really hits the home run is we as "images" representing God are to treat all the other "images" made by God. How you treat other "images" is treating God the same way. If God were in front of you would you treat God or talk to God how you speak to others?? When you realize that then you start understanding WHY so much of the Bible deals with how YOU treat other people. But when you think "would I swear at God or degrade Him with lies or fraud" while you're doing that to fellow humans. It makes you rethink how you treat others....big time. The hard part for us humans today is to continually keep that at the front of our daily thoughts and activities. It took me a long time to truly comprehend and wrap my brain around the concept. Dr Heiser thoroughly explores every angle to either reject or accept different parts of the idea, which works towards the center conclusion of the right answer. A lot of times I had to listen 5 to 10 times to grasp points he brings up. Dr Heiser is truly sent by God to our time to get us to fully understand the alleged "mysteries" which the "church leaders" made "mysteries" thru their ignorance of ancient cultures, documents, and manuscripts.

Rebirth is being born of the spirit not the word (by Christ's doing not ours) The word in context of john 1:1 is about the "words of the spirit of prophecy if this book" (rev 21) which was pre existant before creation: which is Christ the Creator revealed in scripture, fulfilled as written He would be born, suffer, be crucified, raise from the dead for remission of sin to those who believe. The creation itself is a model of salvation, that light shines in darkness, which is the revelation of Christ. ..... Where does it say in scripture "the word makes order out of chaos"? .....it is not there. On the contrary; In Isaiah 45:7 God says; "I form the light and CREATE DARKNESS. I make well being and I CREATE CALAMITY. I, the LORD, do all these things" ...... Don't kid yourself, Gods word speaks chaos too. He destroyed man in Noah's flood, drowned Pharoah, a massacre of infants. ..... There are seals to be opened that kill 1/4 population. Then 1/3. Grass burnt trees burnt, waters made bitter, life in waters die, scorched with great heat, loathsome sores, great hail, mountains thrown down, the elements will dissolve with fervent heat... (rev 6, 8-19, 2 peter 3) 2/3 of Jews will die in tribulation (ezekiel 5:12) Does that sound like the word means 'order out of chaos"? Then there is wrath on Babylon, thrown down with violence. (Rev 17, 18, 19) Christ will have blood splatter of the nations on his garments, He says "I will pour out their lifeblood upon the earth" (Isaiah 63:1-6, rev 19:13) ....... You can count on it, the word of prophecy speaks chaos, death and destruction.

John 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. 6:64 But there are some of you that believe not. For Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him. 6:65 And he said, Therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 6:66 From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.

Hello 👋 Dr. Peterson. At 3 am while the rest sleep, those of us whose minds never stop ponder ideas 💡 like what does it mean to be the word. When I first became a Christian, in the beginning was the Word, and the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us was a ground breaking revelation to me. Words are all we have to get concepts from one mind to another, so in order for us to understand the mind of God the father, it was necessary to send the Word (the creative force of the trinity) into the creation. A study of what Yeshua claimed about himself reveals what all of us must do with Him. He is to be our LORD. He is the way the truth and the life, He is the door, He is the Sheppard who lays down His life for His sheep. "Before Abraham was", Yeshua said, "I Am". Just as Pilot, Nicodemus, the religious leaders down to the fishermen...all were asked to answer the question. "Who do you say that I am" 🤔! All must answer. I like Peter respond, you are the Christ. It is more than a symbol. It is more than a myth, it is the answer you all seek. He is the truth! And the truth sets us free. ❤

The notion of logos being a merger of love and truth, essential to healthy perception is a significant advance to my thinking. Thank you Dr. Peterson. Jesus said at the end, "those who belong to the truth, listen to my voice". The word "belong" gives us the comfort to listen with open hearts and minds and this reinforces Dr. Peterson's suggestion that society needs us to choose our associates wisely to see the truth. In the bigger picture I believe the human conscience is the pinnacle of evolution with functions that enable us to avoid (not eliminate) evil - (harm to self and others) and temptation - (unreasonable risk of harm). When we confront the entire crucifixion and the potential harms in our lives, we learn the tools of humility, turn the other cheek, forgive, walk the extra mile, and find ways to love even our enemies that avoids entropy, anxiety, and loss of joy. We become free to love s the spirit moves us. I wish Dr. Peterson the best in his fight-with-God book and hope he can articulate the functions of the conscience that he obviously has. I suspect, even for him, the biggest chalange will be to totally reject punishment (harm) and support discipline (help) that causes no harm in all circumstances. The stories of the Old Testament, government laws, and religious tradition must be overcome for the sake of the Kingdom.

Greek Ionian cities like Ephesus and Miletus are of the outmost importance regarding European and quite frankly,World culture. They are just as important as Athens,Thebes etc. These were the places where science(or better, the methodology of science) was born, where Hellenic philosophy took huge leaps for the better, not only for Greece, but for all mankind. Also,if it isn't too much to ask,a video about the pre-Socratic philosophers will be great!

Ephesus was far more important in the 1st century than people understand. Its primary purpose was the center for the goddess Artemis of Ephesus cult. It was far more than a "cult" town. Its modern claim to faith was the Temple of Artemis a wonder of the world. Part of the Artemis "system" was a huge financial center, a CitiBank or CitiCorp of its day. If you needed a safe place to put your coins that was the safest, by reputation anyway. On the religious belief and teaching side, Artemis of Ephesus was unique. It wasn't just worshiping some statue or whatever, but all the points of belief were in 100% opposition to every point of the Judaeo-Christian God. Couple quick examples, Artemis created the earth and universe. Artemis created the God of the Jews. Woman was created first, then man. And it goes on and on. I embarked on a research quest to find the reasons why the Apostle Paul says what he does about women and things related. I found every single point in the cult of Artemis. It was a female superiority cult very similar to "radical feminism" today. Men were subordinate in every way. They were very aggressive and would get in your face if you questioned or doubted what they said/believed. The hardest part I've found out is getting "christians" to understand the backstory, the reason Paul wrote what he did. He wasn't sitting around thinking...we need to put our wives/women in their place and make sure they know who's boss in the house. But that is the ignorant and uninformed "plain reading" so many churches have been applying for centuries. Its been very obvious that a surprising number of men will not listen to or consider the evidence. Its also very apparent a bunch of these very loud men really like being able to use the Bible to keep them women in line. A voice crying in the wilderness.......I'm beginning to have a deeper understanding of the emotion behind those words.

I've been watching this while eating my Christmas dinner. I'm not religious but none the less found this talk and it's sentiment to be profoundly relevant to the spirit and mythos of Christmas (which I'm sure was the intent) as well as surprisingly uplifting. I regularly see people I know and care for falling foul of nihilism, hedonism, narcissism and despair. I have fallen foul of them myself, but I am still standing and I still have the hope and belief that humanity is capable of attaining mastery of it's own malevolence in the service of the highest of virtuous goals. This will only come to pass if we are awake and are able to prepare those that follow to be something other than a child holding a lethally dangerous weapon. A happy Christmas to all.

@Wild Stoic Podcast Interesting idea. However, IF Paul was educated in Tarsus then he would have been taught the Aristotelian categories of Rhetoric (Logos, Pathos, Ethos). We know this because many of the teachers at Tarsus in the first century were Stoic followers of Aristotle's work. In fact, Tarsus was one of the major educational sites in the ancient Roman world at that time. BUT, what Paul would have done is subvert the concepts (as he usually does). There are a lot of studies that confirm these details!
