Hadrian (l. 78-138 CE) was emperor of Rome (r. 117-138 CE) and is recognized as the third of the Five Good Emperors (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius) who ruled justly. His reign marked the height of the Roman Empire, usually given as c. 117 CE, and provided a firm foundation for his successor.
Of all his significant monuments and buildings, Hadrian's Wall in northern Britain is the most famous. Construction of the wall, known in antiquity as Vallum Hadriani, was begun around 122 CE and corresponded to Hadrian's visit to the province. It marked the northern boundary of the Roman Empire in Britain, but the length and breadth of the project (stretching, as it did, from coast to coast) suggests that the more important purpose of the wall was a show of Rome's power.
Hadrian’s handling of the Bar-Kochba Revolt is the one dark stain on his otherwise admirable reign, but he made his choices based on traditional Roman policy in handling revolts: a harsh response followed by restoration. He may have taken his response as far as he did from personal outrage that anyone would have had a problem with his temple or any of his other decisions.

Why do you think Hadrian was such a popular emperor?
@NicoleSCampbell
@NicoleSCampbell Жыл бұрын
He expanded, he built, those are quite popular. He was obviously smart and handsome and fought for what he believed in. Rome was peaceful enough for him to leave it presupposing he would come back which he did. He secured those who came after him, although it is obvious sheer luck that got him into his role. A woman! I would not say this was a huge villain excepting how many jews were killed. But both sides suffered a large loss. I'd say it was his intelligence and charm 😁

Because he was a gigachad who slew those Edomite faux Judeans without mercy! And now those same Edomite faux Judeans operate false history sites, and show their disdain for everything holy and decent by using C.E. instead of A.D., and claiming everyone is perverse and homosexual like they are!

He was popular because he was unusual emperor. for Romans - because he was absent of Rome most of the time for other Roman provinces - because he personally visited them building many infrastructure.

Thank you for not ignoring the horrific treatment of the Jews in Judea. Too many people give him a pass on this because of their biases. I have several detailed lectures on what happened to the Jews under Roman control.

Regarding the name change from Judea to Syria Palestina from Wikipedia: no evidence exists as to exactly when the name change was implemented or by whom,the name "Palestina" to the whole region had been used by the Greeks for centuries and by then,[26] and the renaming may even have taken place at an earlier date.

Palestine is the Greek Aramaic name of the region before even the romans were there. Go read Herodotus. Only Jews called it Judaea. Hadrain didn't ive a da.... who was who enemy to who lol he just re organized the region the way Pompey before him did.

He commissioned those projects! Let's be truthful about who did the work. It wasn't Hadrian. His subjects obeyed him and got to live. That was their payment. I will agree he had a lot of great ideas, that he made take place. His treatment of the Jews, of course, was bad.

We know that it wasn't Hadrian who did the work himself. 😉 Hadrian achieved many great things during his reign, which is why he is known as one of the 'Five Good Emperors', but he certainly wasn't perfect.
