The last time he became a sugar daddy his lover drowned in the Nile, soon after the Jews revolted in Judea (modern day Palestine / Israel) and he crushed the rebellion so hard that he effectively wiped out the Jews of Judea and caused the Jews to scatter from the Holy Land for more then 1900 years. He destroyed the 2nd temple and and in it's place built a Roman temple. He destroyed and banned the Jews from Jerusalem and then renamed the city Aelia Capitolina.

Awesome video. I really enjoyed watching it, however, there were a couple mistakes that I spotted. First, the bust that you showed when you mentioned Nerva was actually a bust of Claudius, Rome's fourth Emperor. Second, it was Claudius who was the first Roman Emperor born outside of Italy. Claudius was born in Gaul in the city of Lugdunum (modern day Lyons, France) on August 1, 10 BCE. As such that would make Trajan the second Roman Emperor born outside of Italy. I think what you meant to say was that Trajan was the first Roman Emperor who was born in Hispania.

But then I cant even recall when I first heard hints that Alexander the great also had a male lover. I also read that another great military man, Julius Caesar himself was possibly bi sexual and that this was used as a sneer against him at the time. Not sure where I came across that. Then of course back into mythology there was that great hero Achilles and his partner (sorry hollywood, not his cousin) Patroclus. Referring to Antonius as a young man/man is a little deceptive. Antonius was between age 12 and 15 when Hadrian took him as a lover, and died when he was 18/19, while Hadrian was in his 50s. This was blatant pederasty and when historians say he was a boy, they quite literally mean that.
@katharinesutton7556 Жыл бұрын
right! seeing everyone glorifying this relationship is beyond creepy because not only was there the major age difference but the power imbalance between literally the most powerful man in the empire and an actual child just makes it even more upsetting
@SarastistheSerpent10 ай бұрын
By Greco Roman standards, Antinous wasn’t a boy, but an adult man. A person was considered an adult as soon as they went through puberty. This is universal in essentially all pre-modern societies. The idea that a person is an adult at 18 is a very modern concept that didn’t exist even before the 18th centuries. Average marriageable age for girls before the 1800s was around 14.

It's perhaps important to point out that more statues of Antinous have been uncovered in comparison to any other historical figure from the ancient world. The reason for this had to do with the enormous popularity of his cult, which spread throughout the Empire, like you say. Also, Antinous is arguably the first gay man in history to be deified.
@mg48612 жыл бұрын
@Duncan Disorderly was not GAIUS Julius Caesar before him?
@bullzdawguk2 жыл бұрын
@@mg4861 Oh I see. You're saying Caesar was the first gay man deified. I suppose you have a point. However, technically speaking, Caesar was bi.

@@mg4861 Oh yea, forgot to say, I did say Antinous was arguably the first gay man deified. This is why I said that. 😄
@mg48612 жыл бұрын
@@bullzdawgukCaesar was deified by Augustus, if I remember well. I'm wondering more if the origin of the english word is in "Gaius" referred exactly to Caesar. We know that Caesar was bisexual, but who knows if Antinous was bisexual too?
@bullzdawguk2 жыл бұрын
@@mg4861 Yes, it was Augustus. I love that period of history because Europe's future was poignantly decided in the Battle of Actium. Some points in history have bigger ripples I reckon. This was a huge one. If you are familiar with it, you'll know it was a naval battle that decided Mark Antony's and Rome's fate. The remarkable thing is, he had no experience fighting on the water, which gave him an enormous disadvantage. If he had faced Augustus (Octavian, at the time) on land, he most likely would have defeated him. The entire history of ancient Rome from 31BC onward would be entirely different. It would be interesting to see that alternative reality, in modern times. Anyway, I see what you mean about Gaius. I'm interested to find out and I'll no doubt Google over the next day or so. As far as Antinous' sexuality is concerned, the only confirmed sexual partner, that I know of, is Hadrian. So, we can only speculate. That said, the evidence weighs on him being into men only. More so, since Hadrian had no interest in women sexually. His childless marriage only helps to confirm where he preferred to dip his wick. 😄

The story of Hadrian and Antinous seems to be not dissimilar to that of Alexander the Great and his lover, Hephaestion, some 450 years earlier. These are the kind of things that our History teachers never told us (come to your own conclusions as to why), though there have been heroic, strong, just and wise gay men in power throughout history.
@98Zai2 жыл бұрын
I loved that she mentioned them going to Egypt to visit Alexanders tomb and that they celebrated their relationship there. You just know that they felt a connection :) Maybe bringing a lover to war is the key to world domination :p most leaders in history never got to bring a loved one on their important travels or to deal with matters of state.

@OFARA Why do you use "they"? Adriano was a MAN who considered himself a MAN, for him not to be considered a man would have been a huge insult. Adriano's masculine virility was never questioned, he would have killed you in a second if you had doubted that he was a Man with a capital M!

Love the history, as well as the recreations! Excellent!
@katharinesutton7556 Жыл бұрын
As brilliant as these recreations are i think it’s important to remember that most historians estimate Antoninus was 12-13 when he met Hadrian and was about 19 when he died and Hadrian was 54, which obviously puts a completely different spin on this story. It’s no doubt that Hadrian was an extremely competent emperor but this doesn’t detract from how creepy his ‘love’ story with Antonius really was (no matter how acceptable it was in Roman society at the time!)

Definitely true, but you also have to remember that in Rome, a person was considered an adult as soon as they went through puberty. So technically Antinous was an adult according to Greco-Roman standards

Well considering he never really (by all accounts I've seen) found another lover, I think that It would be fair to say that, while yes creepy, was at least bound by more than just physical attraction. This might have been a case where they would have been together until Hadrian died. Who knows how Antoninus felt though, He was too young when they met to fully mature mentally. maybe that internal struggle had lead him into taking his own life, there's no way of telling. Still a tragic thing all around.

Great video. Maybe Antinous dyed his hair, the ancient Romans did use hair dyes IIRC. Or, if it was a description of his natural hair colour, it was probably either a very dark auburn or jet black (to the point it reflected with a hint of blue). I would have loved to see that Vibia Sabina statue brought to life, she looks like she was a real beauty.

More decades ago than I care to admit, I majored in History during my undergraduate years at college. Although I was unable to go on to the superior degrees due to my parents' refusal to pay further tuition, I have continued to read in my major, even to this day. Your encapsulated presentation of Hadrian and of how much he loved and was loved by Antinous, is the FINEST summary of that historical episode that I have ever encountered. I have, in the past, avoided this era, but now I want to go back and steep myself, to the best of my ability, in it. I feel now the same enthusiam I once enjoyed in my first two years of college. Thank you so very much---SO VERY, VERY MUCH---for creating and posting this excellent and inspiring video.
