Hadrian is the sugar daddy standard.
@oligultonn
@oligultonn Жыл бұрын
The last time he became a sugar daddy his lover drowned in the Nile, soon after the Jews revolted in Judea (modern day Palestine / Israel) and he crushed the rebellion so hard that he effectively wiped out the Jews of Judea and caused the Jews to scatter from the Holy Land for more then 1900 years. He destroyed the 2nd temple and and in it's place built a Roman temple. He destroyed and banned the Jews from Jerusalem and then renamed the city Aelia Capitolina.

The jews were not wiped out from judea for 1900 years. That’s a falsehood as history shows a continuous existence. How can you account for slaughters of people who were not present. Ludicrous.

@@oligultonn Yeah, but he took his lover on a trip around the world first and built hundreds of statues for him. Then the tragedies and genocide happened. So…it was a win until he drowned and Hadrian went mad with grief? 👀

When Antinous smiled during your amazing recreation .. I cried .. so understandable how Hadrian was so devastated by the loss of this beautiful young man.. felt so sorry for Hadrian .. So glad I was that you put them together in your recreations .. I am sure Hadrian would be grateful indeed ., You have a magical and mystical touch when doing these recreations ., the stories you tell are intriguing and makes your viewers wonder how you will see them .. I have watched all of these you have done and found them all profoundly beautiful.. my favorite was Vincent van Gogh ., from the story you told, this poor soul had so very little in his life to cheer him .. and when you made him smile at the end ., it truly broke my heart ., so beautiful to see .. Thank you so much for the wondrous work you do ,. Jen999💙

Awesome video. I really enjoyed watching it, however, there were a couple mistakes that I spotted. First, the bust that you showed when you mentioned Nerva was actually a bust of Claudius, Rome's fourth Emperor. Second, it was Claudius who was the first Roman Emperor born outside of Italy. Claudius was born in Gaul in the city of Lugdunum (modern day Lyons, France) on August 1, 10 BCE. As such that would make Trajan the second Roman Emperor born outside of Italy. I think what you meant to say was that Trajan was the first Roman Emperor who was born in Hispania.

Hadrian was 35 years older than the “young Antinous.” Let’s not over look this important fact. I don’t see this as a sweet love affair, as the poor boy was 12 when he was introduced to Hadrian and was likely forced to become his “favorite” during his adolescent years of 12-17. Far from a great love story 😔

Exactly, the modern gay community seem to celebrate Antinous as a gay icon. However it’s possible, and likely, that Antinous was not gay by choice but a victim of abuse by the all powerful emperor Hadrian.

Antonius Pius seems have to been a decent man. My favorite anecdote about him involves Marcus Aurelius, when the future emperor was still a boy, and deeply mourning a tutor's passing. A courtier complained to Antonius Pius about the un-Roman public displays of grief, but Antonius Pius chastised the courtier. "Let him be just a man for once; for neither philosophy nor empire takes away natural feeling."

Doesn't look like Claudius to me (perhaps you've corrected it), but in any case, that's a very small flaw. More serious is the mispronunciation of "Antinous" as "Antinus". The "o" and "u" are separate syllables. Otherwise, this video is quite well done, balancing the major historical events of Hadrian's life with his personal life. Both Hadrian and Antinous continue to fascinate many people into the 21st century.

Ive never heard his relationship with his male lover mentioned disparagingly. Not even really commented on just reported. But then I cant even recall when I first heard hints that Alexander the great also had a male lover. I also read that another great military man, Julius Caesar himself was possibly bi sexual and that this was used as a sneer against him at the time. Not sure where I came across that. Then of course back into mythology there was that great hero Achilles and his partner (sorry hollywood, not his cousin) Patroclus. Ive also heard that several of our Victorian era military heroes were also homosexual. It seems that being gay is no obstacle to being a great and often popular military leader.

@@cronchybo At the beginning the Romans did not accept homosexuality. They used to see this as a "greek vicious". Maybe the greek influence when the Roman conquered Greece?

However, in the Roman empire, the subject of "pater familis" was very important. So in the end, the Roman accepted and embrace homosexuality but with differentiation into being a top ("dominant similarly to a male subject") and a bottom ("the dominated similarly to a female subject"). You were allowed and was really tolerated to be in a relationship with a man. But depending, you were only allowed to be bottom with older and more powerful men as it was expected submission to your "top" as in a relationship man-woman.

I’m really glad to see these renderings of two of the most famous “gay” men in history. @@jamesmiller4184 Yes, Hadrian was in awe of Antinous due to him having all these great qualities. And rightly so. I don't want to get off topic, but I believe Antinous was killed out of jealousy and rage. When people dislike someone they take away what they love most, and in Hadrian's case, it was Antinous. It's a slow but horrible punishment to watch someone fall apart like that. And if you ask me, this came from a woman...a scorned woman at that.

Referring to Antonius as a young man/man is a little deceptive. Antonius was between age 12 and 15 when Hadrian took him as a lover, and died when he was 18/19, while Hadrian was in his 50s. This was blatant pederasty and when historians say he was a boy, they quite literally mean that.

By Greco Roman standards, Antinous wasn’t a boy, but an adult man. A person was considered an adult as soon as they went through puberty. This is universal in essentially all pre-modern societies. The idea that a person is an adult at 18 is a very modern concept that didn’t exist even before the 18th centuries. Average marriageable age for girls before the 1800s was around 14.

It's perhaps important to point out that more statues of Antinous have been uncovered in comparison to any other historical figure from the ancient world. The reason for this had to do with the enormous popularity of his cult, which spread throughout the Empire, like you say. Also, Antinous is arguably the first gay man in history to be deified.

@bullzdawguk
@bullzdawguk 2 жыл бұрын
@@mg4861 Yes, it was Augustus. I love that period of history because Europe's future was poignantly decided in the Battle of Actium. Some points in history have bigger ripples I reckon. This was a huge one. If you are familiar with it, you'll know it was a naval battle that decided Mark Antony's and Rome's fate. The remarkable thing is, he had no experience fighting on the water, which gave him an enormous disadvantage. If he had faced Augustus (Octavian, at the time) on land, he most likely would have defeated him. The entire history of ancient Rome from 31BC onward would be entirely different. It would be interesting to see that alternative reality, in modern times. Anyway, I see what you mean about Gaius. I'm interested to find out and I'll no doubt Google over the next day or so. As far as Antinous' sexuality is concerned, the only confirmed sexual partner, that I know of, is Hadrian. So, we can only speculate. That said, the evidence weighs on him being into men only. More so, since Hadrian had no interest in women sexually. His childless marriage only helps to confirm where he preferred to dip his wick. 😄

The story of Hadrian and Antinous seems to be not dissimilar to that of Alexander the Great and his lover, Hephaestion, some 450 years earlier. As brilliant as these recreations are i think it’s important to remember that most historians estimate Antoninus was 12-13 when he met Hadrian and was about 19 when he died and Hadrian was 54, which obviously puts a completely different spin on this story. It’s no doubt that Hadrian was an extremely competent emperor but this doesn’t detract from how creepy his ‘love’ story with Antonius really was (no matter how acceptable it was in Roman society at the time!)

Well considering he never really (by all accounts I've seen) found another lover, I think that It would be fair to say that, while yes creepy, was at least bound by more than just physical attraction. This might have been a case where they would have been together until Hadrian died. Who knows how Antoninus felt though, He was too young when they met to fully mature mentally. maybe that internal struggle had lead him into taking his own life, there's no way of telling. Still a tragic thing all around.
