Isn't faith a gift of Grace? Or can I create faith within myself? I don't understand why Jesus rebukes those who are faithless. Can they actually help it whether they have faith or not? I know that I haven't been able to force myself to have faith, nor have many people that I know.

The Greek word "pistis" has traditionally been translated universally in the Bible to "faith," but there's a more recent group of scholars that believe it would often be more appropriately translated to "faithfulness." Fr. Andrew Stephen Damick has a fairly recent video on this subject entitled "What is Faith?" I pray you find the answers you're looking for, brother

It is a Grace to be in “consolation” where you feel close to God rather than “desolation” where you feel far because of our sins. But what you feel is different from your choice. Love is a choice, you choose to love and follow God and believe in God even when you have difficulties or doubts and you pray to God to grant you consolation. But you make this choice to love God regardless of your passing feelings as an act of the will.

@@undolf4097 Sorry, this doesn't answer my question. I don't think you can "choose" to believe. I and others I know have struggled our whole lives to believe, and yet that belief does not come. For example, if you are Orthodox, try "believing" in the legitimacy of the Pope and see if you can. Yet millions of Roman Catholics do. They are not choosing to believe, they believe because it seems true to them. If you'd like to better understand my question, the Fr. Damick video called "Whati is Faith?" mentioned by the previous commenter addresses it quite well.

@@leapoecile5318 sure you can. You can choose despite your weak trust and ask God to help you grow in your trust. The same way you can choose to love someone even when you’re angry with them, or choose to forgive even when you’re hurt.
