@polarknight5376Ай бұрын
I mean, the original Doom is really simple graphics wise, and the code is so dead simple that there are people out there that can recite the whole thing, or at least most of it, by memory. If it has a digital display with a refresh rate, a resolution, and wires connecting to that display that you can get at, it can run Doom. If it's a machine that has a memory space of at least 2.39MB, a 32/16 bit processor, 4 MB of RAM, and it has wires that you can get at to connect to a display, it can run Doom. If it has less than a 2.39 MB memory storage, a 32/16 bit processor, or 4MB of RAM, then you can instead hack some bits off of Doom to make it smaller, and you might be able to get the machine to run that. Please note that it has to be a digital processor. Neural and biological processors cannot run Doom, though some may be developed soon that should be able to play it. You cannot run Doom on most analog computers, but there are some that may be able to.

Why didn’t y’all tell me we unlocked holograms?
@skeletonpatch2 ай бұрын
This isn’t a true hologram, from what others are saying this is a thin grid of LEDs spinning really fast, so you can’t put your hand through it. We unlocked holograms a long time ago, the only issue is that true holograms are projected by placing an object on the inside of a mirrored dome that has a pinhole at the top. The object then appears to be standing or floating above the dome. Incredibly simple but not exactly applicable to projecting digital images and works best with static objects. I visited a science centre once that had a loonie (Canadian $1 coin) atop a pedestal basically begging you to take it, only for your hand to pass right through it, and a plaque on the opposite side explaining exactly how the illusion worked.

Imagine this in a vacuum tube (so no air resistance), spinning even faster with a larger matrix of LED’s for a higher resolution image. I’d love to play some voxel-ised volumetric versions of some 16 bit classics! This looks amazing as is but I’m sure it looks even better in person. The rolling shutter of the camera and its refresh rate will be causing some of the display issues and flicker we re seeing.
@offlinegamer67562 күн бұрын
the sound of the engine making the faster spinning possible would be too loud and energy hungry , and don't forget the friction and the heat generated , this is not a viable product , too dangerous and power hungry !

@ones_flow5652Ай бұрын
When I was in my youth in the 90s I thought more of something like the VR head sets like the Goggles or in the movie The Lawnmower Man, but with better graphics as the movie itself was real at this time. This, or like the Squid Clips from the movie Strange Days which was way ahead of its time. Besides that, better graphics and no, I'm not really impressed by lots of games. This and augmented reality. Still waiting for some good stuff...🙂

We've had makeshift holograms for a while now, theyre just really simple. Gonna take a while before we get "true" holograms like in star wars
@polarknight5376Ай бұрын
Yeah, they're called volumetric displays, and they suck. The word hologram means something else entirely. A real hologram is a static 2d image that appears 3d because of an optical illusion. You've probably seen them in gift shops, those line textured plastic cards with images on them that turn 3d in the right light. Blame George Lucas for your mistake, he was the first to misuse the word in Star Wars.

Cool! Btw for those in the comments who think this is a hologram, it's not. Holograms are an entirely different technology that involves recording the light field of an object onto a physical medium (e.g. silver halide film) using the interference of two laser beams. What you're seeing here is actually a volumetric display (as in the title), a device that creates the illusion of depth
