Breq is one of my favorite characters of all time. I love distant yet still caring protagonist that isn’t as reliable as they say combined with the constant observation of body language and situation. The exploration of her character was so well written in my opinion

I love how Leckie trusted us to know she's AI and didn't need to do anything gimmicky with it. It was a great balance between artificial and human feel

I found the first half of Ancillary Justice hard to get into but it really picked up in the last half. Yeah, I think the dialogue tracking was part of it. But the next two books in the trilogy were on fire!

Yeah, I think once the first half is tackled, the whole series just goes great from there

Ancillary Justice sounds like a great science-fiction novel. I love your description of it, especially knowing that it expounds on Humanity, Consciousness, Addiction, Free-Will, Morality, and Justice. It seems like something that I'd love to check out.

Great review, Michael! I love that this explores the power of language in a unique way. I probably should read Left Hand of Darkness before this one, but the themes in this one also sound interesting!

Thanks J. I like the idea of reading that whole trio, Left Hand of Darkness, Babel-17, and Ancillary Justice in proximity.

Rereading this and absolutely noted what you picked up about confusing dialogue. There was a page I had to go back on and see who was saying what as it didn't make sense. What jarred with me second time round, all the stuff about tea yet theres a part where Breq talks about eking out her water allowance yet this is meant to be a super high tech civilisation that has ultra advance AIs that jets around space etc im sure they could mine a couple of comets or whatever.

It was, I think the only book on my 150 video that I didn't have a physical copy for...and I kid you not...while filming that video I randomly looked in a little free library in the street and it was the only scifi book in there...what are the odds?

I've had this book on my shelf for awhile now. I'm always drawn to Sci-Fi but never seem to get around to reading it! As always, fantastic review.

Thanks BAR. Its one, I think, where you might read 15 pages and think..."hmm maybe not what I'm in the mood for..." but I think just crack it open and get to page 50 and let the story unfold...catch my Thursday, Children of Time review...im adding something fun to my intros for the next several reviews...

@@FIT2BREAD Sadly, no Sci-Fi on my agenda this month. I'm working on a couple cozy mysteries and should be finishing David Copperfield this week. Hoping to start Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson next week. So many books, so little time!

That is a problem for me XD I am already confused with names and with dialogues like that i would lose myself and maybe reread it sometimes. Maybe the audiobook helps with that? Amazing review as always friend ^^

Thursday ritual - get home from work, take out the trash because it's garbage night, make some food, sit down and watch FIT 2 B READ. Haha. I've got this on the shelf. Should I read this or A Memory Called Empire first? I want your opinion. (they both sound like my kind of thing).

@@FIT2BREAD That would be my take on it too---I think I mentioned to you before that I felt like I missed a few things on the first read, and that a second read would be better. As an aside, I'm about halfway through Tiamat's Wrath, and I'm really enjoying that. re: Neal Asher books. The Agent Cormac series are ok, but nothing like the ones set in the spatterjay world. I finished The Brass Man (I think that's book 3 of Agent Cormac, and that's the first book of the series that I felt I was getting pulled into. The other ones I felt like an outside observer, not really caring what happened to the characters).

@@chrisconnors7418 oh cool on Tiamat.. speaking of Asher, I do think I'll get to one of those ..prob mid year. You'll excuse me if when I do get to it..I circle back. Because we were discussing it before and I felt pretty confident which direction I'd go, but by mid year ill need a reminder hahah
@chrisconnors74182 жыл бұрын
@@FIT2BREAD :) Understandable. I kept losing track this past few months so I had to start an Excel list of what books I wanted to read, who recommended them. If you need a reminder, let me know (I'm assuming you'll remember who to ask :). You had said you'd probably start Jack Four (a standalone). The Skinner is the start of a Spatterjay trilogy set in the same world as Jack Four, but it can be a standalone as well. The next two books are sort of standalones, but you'd get more out them if you were familiar with the Spatterjay world. Each book in the trilogy wraps up the main story from that trilogy so there's no cliffhangers.

The problem with that examination of language is that it's just not true. Language doesn't restrict us like that at all. If people don't have a word for something they make it up. You're not speaking ancient Norse for a reason. This almost feels like examining why the moon is made out of cheese. It's not.

It’s in my Goodreads “Want to Read” folder. I have dozens of books in there. I wish I could quit my 70+ hr/wk job and just stay home and read. 😆
