This is YELLOWHEART a South American wood from Brazil and I'm going to try to make something out of it. I'm going to need all my woodturning skills as I take on this mammoth end grain turning. Don't forget the DUST - IT's ALL YELLOW!

Your narrative is probably one of the best I have heard for any genre from camping to restoration, dioramas to gardening. Clear, concise, explanatory and with that element of inviting us, the viewer to be there with you as you modify and adjust your projects as they unfold. The time-lapse, intervals and general video keeps the audience interested. Nothing boring about your stuff and I watch start to finish without fast forwarding as I do with all other genres I view.

My wife has several platters for the various seasons / events... (I'd add several more for astronomical events such as equinox & solstice) That being said, serving friends & fam for anyday breaking of bread would in fact, and be, a pleasure served on such a gorgeous work of art.

Just saw this now. Sorry to be a year behind. But, wanted to say how very much I enjoy all of your videos. You have a lovely way about you and give so much in depth and useful information. I’m newly retired from my day job and have been rebuilding a 100 year old garage to become woodworking and turning shop. I started harvesting a lot of free wood 8 months ago, much of which is in the cookie category from being cut down by home owner or tree service. This platter gives me hope for how to utilize some of the prettier ones. And not be too scared of pith and associated cracks. Thanks so much for all of your projects. I learn so much and see species of wood I don’t have free access to in upstate New York.

It's so refreshing to watch you turning, just stabilizing the wood, letting the wood be the star of the show, its not that I have anything against the use of Epoxy, but it has become so common place now, its sort of like the "doodle phenomenon" no matter what dog breed you have, cross breed it with a Poodle (I saw an Irish Wolf Hound Doodle the other day, sacrilege?) the Yellow Heart really is gorgeous and the blonde shellac really shows its natural beauty. Thanks again, and keep up thee good work.

Hi Mike. I think this wood is also called greenheart. Its' color can vary from bright yellow to dark olive green. It's extremely dense, hard on tools and can be difficult to work. It can resist finishes but takes a good polish. It's very durable and was often used in boat building and turning. A pretty wood.

You could have called the video "Mike makes a dust bowl". LOL I have a board of yellowhearrt. I have only used this in flat work - decorative boards. My board is a bright yellow like some of the dust which came off the inside. Very well done. The platter looks terrific. What a work out, perhaps second only to the aluminium turning. An incredible amount of dust. Reminds me of a bowl I turned from slippery elm. Long ribbon shavings when wet, then hard and dust shavings when dry. The adhesive on masking tape varies a great deal between brands. If a given brand does not hold up against the solvent in the CA glue, then use hot glue to seal the bottom of the cracks. Dave.

Enjoy your holiday! I have not seen Yellow Heart before. This was quite some undertaking, being all end grain. I bet it was Hard wirk! Looks great! Well done!

End grain is so difficult to cut and then sanding seems to take forever. Well done, beautiful and useful art!

As always, a beautiful turning. I have never heard of this wood before, but it has turned beautifully. Thank you for your perseverance with this difficult project.

I have recently obtained a large oak log and am considering cutting at least 1 cookie from it. It is much larger than I can turn however and I really don't want to waste it but I love the way that this platter turned out and I may go one and cut 1 and keep it for whenever I get a larger lathe.

Hi Diana, sounds like a good plan, seal it well but do expect it to crack. It's almost impossible to stop a cookie from splitting. All the best, Mike 😁

Hi Mike, another great project. Those cracks add real character to the platter, stunning, that would look amazing full of fruit outside for a garden party / picnic. Thanks for sharing Mike
