Great job Mike, spalted wood has its ups and downs you never know what you may come across. A little tip I have learned when trying to repair defects is if you had given the hole a good coating of super glue first this would have sealed the wood, then you could make a dam around the hole with hot glue. It is then possible to pour your resin or glue into the hole above the surface of the wood. You can then use a heat gun to remove the bubbles that may form giving you hopefully a solid repair. Thanks Stu.

As you rightly said, there were certainly some challenges along the way but, as always, you were willing to take on those challenges & WON. I can't help but wonder what the outcome would have been if you had soaked the soft spots with thin CA to harden those areas & gone on with the turning, it's probably the path I would have taken for the challenge. Hmmm. Good job produced under difficult circumstances Mike. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

@@MikeHolton see FORGOTTEN HISTORY for a more accurate picture of what happened in our country. There is a lot of fun to be had using wood that's maybe passed its best. I have one on the go just now. Something I have used to good effect in the past is single pack wood hardening resins, sold as wet rot treatment. In most cases it leaves the existing wood hard enough to turn & will double up as a sanding sealer. Tin sizes are from 250ml upwards & prices can vary a fair bit, so shop around. Just a thought but I have had success with the stuff in that past. Stay safe.

@@MikeHolton The bubbles were air pockets created by this resin. When you taped over it, it trapped the bubbles and the heat generated by the curing process.
