@joshsteffen8 жыл бұрын
+Im Not Dead Books you get it! This version is absurd on purpose. I remember Joey talking about the early days of slipknot - he understood that his style would ruin most bands because he wasn't satisfied just playing the bare minimum. I applied that to this song - which ironically gives Lars much praise. The internet consensus is that Lars is shit. It's great to see Lars get the credit he deserves.
@Colt2OO27 жыл бұрын
I once said on a video of yours that Lars is in my mind one of the greatest drummers ever and someone basically said, "fuck no, he's shit and was only good way back in the 80's.'' Well if he's shit, why have so many modern day drummers named him as a major influence? And just because he doesn't do all these fast drum patterns like he did from Kill Em All up to ...And Justice For All doesn't mean he's bad in any way. That would be like saying Joey Jordison has gone soft just because he suffers from a disease that prevents him from playing these fast parts like he used to in Slipknot. So again, despite what many people say, I think Lars Ulrich is one of the greatest drummers to ever come along in metal. If anyone disagrees, well then, you must not know what Metallica is because without him, they'd be history.
@ianperry95987 жыл бұрын
jonny j Well mate, I’ve seen the fair amount of people who say he sucks back in the 80s 90s too, which is pretty false. Agree that nowadays he can be pretty unlistenable, but still is solid on his night.
@seanmichael82026 жыл бұрын
I don't see the humor... I see it as embarrassing for Lars. Yeah, this is over the top... But given the bands that were around at that time and how well they still play their songs, this just goes to show, Lars was obviously not the glue of the band. Had they picked up a Lombardo, or a Menza... Or someone like Jordinson? God only knows with the likes of Hetfield and his posse could've done. I'll give it to them as a whole, obviously solid! And yes, Lars DID open up a certain world for drums when I was a kid. But it wasn't til I found the meat of the drummer world that I realized Lars is really just the milk, if that makes any sense. I thought this was a pretty cool showcase of some rather standard drumming techniques! Says even more about my point... Lars couldn't play this version if someone offered him a billion dollars to learn it... Can't help realize the suckiness of it all
@warriorforchrist39786 жыл бұрын
Sean Michael why does everyone have to speed drum because someone else is doing it? All those unnecessary fills. Sometimes less is more. And if your argument is that Lars can’t hold a rhythm and keep time? Well you try and do that when your band mates are coked up and THEIR speed/rhythm changes every night
@brandontucciarone71677 жыл бұрын
To all who are saying that this doesn't fit, that is the exact point that Josh is trying to prove through this video because when ever people talk about Lars it's always about how he's a shitty drummer! Josh clearly states that in a video so when you say this doesn't fit and Lars is the right guy for Metallica, you are absolutely right! We're giving Lars props for a change instead of calling him a shitty drummer!
@Joshua-gu5nj3 жыл бұрын
Wow! I can't listen to Metallica because the drums don't fit. I *love* this because I'm hearing Metallica with drums that fit for the first time! I'd pay good money for a full album of this. Edit - Last night I had a dream I was listening to Metallica, and in the dream I was amazed by Lars's drumming. I learn a lot from my dreams, so I'm listening to Metallica today and paying attention to the drums with an open mind.
@vinceparham91803 жыл бұрын
I don’t think Lars is a shitty drummer. I think Lars is a lazy and uninspired drummer. For me, the lack of innovation and seeming desire to simply coast drags Metallica down a bit in creative terms. It’s reduced them to a hard rock band as opposed to the metal band they started out as. While the other three of the Big Four continued evolving as thrashy metal bands that they are while also gaining critical acclaim, Metallica sms to have opted for the big payouts. I’m not saying that they’re sellouts at all. I’m saying that this was necessitated by Lars’ laziness. Metallica is still a solid band for what they are, but I feel like Lars is their weakest link
@strugglepresident37796 күн бұрын
Playing in a completely different style -- a style made for a completely different metal band -- doesn’t prove jack shit. Would playing Sad But True like Stewart Copeland plays Message in a Bottle prove... anything? And people don't hate on Ulrich for his 80's compositions. They hate on him for playing badly a decade or two or three later.
@brandontucciarone71676 күн бұрын
@@strugglepresident3779I posted this comment 7 years ago lol. Also, my comment is geared more towards the people in the comments saying that this sucks and/or doesn’t fit the song. I didn’t say that this cover proves what a good drummer Lars is, because the truth is, he’s lackluster, especially nowadays and compared to other drummers who are far better. However, I can say without fear of contradiction, Lars is the right guy for METALLICA! Would they sound way better now with a tighter drummer who actually practiced? Absolutely. I can certainly see why many dislike Lars as a drummer, because as soon as the money started rolling in, he stopped giving a damn about his craft and lost his edge as a result. If Lars still practiced and took his craft seriously, he’d be 10x better today without a doubt. But reality is, without Lars, the band wouldn’t be where they are today. You said it yourself, this is being played in a completely different style, made for a completely different band, which isn’t at all proving how great Lars is, but it’s not proving that he’s bad either. Say what you will about his drumming, but hearing Metallicas music as we’ve heard/known it for decades, it wouldn’t sound the same in any other style, although some people, myself included, do find that interesting. That’s the point that Josh was trying to make through this video, and the point I was trying to make in my OP.

This is a great example that all the technical drumming skills don't necessarily transfer to make the song work. While his drumming is really good, it just doesn't fit the song. Lars gets a ton of hate for all the stuff he can't play, but never any credit for knowing his band is first and foremost about the guitars! His job is to lay down a groove and get out of the way. Which he does

I agree, but I think more of the fact why he didn't play like this was because drumming like this back in the 80s was basically unfathomable. Same way with guitars. I bet people in the 60/70s couldn't even imagine the type of playing and technicality that has been introduced in guitar playing since the 80s. Standard and plain was the way to go for them.
@Jasonsz5108 жыл бұрын
+Idontknowone1able fair point. I think the stuff he doesn't play, is as valuable to what he does play. It's all about serving the needs of the song. If they like the way it sounds. So be it :)

It may not be the best fit for the song, but it's still incredible to watch and listen to
@timijtsma72337 жыл бұрын
this proves that Lars is very much a terrible drummer. When people are succesfull they don't try as hard anymore ......Lars hasn't tried to improve himself since the justice album ........
@OleksiiTheAngry5 жыл бұрын
perfectly shows why a good 'lonesome' punch sometimes would sound a lot more to the point than a bunch of subdivisions ;) yet, you've captured Joey's style pretty good!
@TheRealRRDemon5 жыл бұрын
It may be a tad "over the top"... but it just seems to work well. I keep coming back to this version you did.. and Josh Steffen... you did a fantastic job. Honestly I would love this exact version with the drums normalized into the song to add to my playlist...

Fantastic as always! Always happy when one of your videos comes up in my newsfeed and love Metallia too so nice one thanks Josh you rock! :-D

you really get a lot of action out of that snare and those top toms. shits impressive.
@hathem6668 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry Josh! Usually I like so much your videos and the irony that you get in. But this time I don't like this song. Maybe 'cause is my favourite Metallica's song and play it like this make me hurt. Sorry Josh, hope you understand. See you soon! \m/

Frummelification it's a piss take lol and in reality is overplayed and plays over the track rather in it

Joey’s style adds destruction to the elegant sounding music to this masterpiece and I love it 😂
@JohnKasarinlan8 жыл бұрын
Only Lars' style really works on Metallica. I do mean the Lars of 1983-1989. If he only really had practice more......he would probably be more like Brann Dailor today the way they both kinda overused the snare(Only Brann's fills are definitely more better and complex yet serves their songs). Just my opinion. I'm no expert on drumming much less know how to play one.

You should do a Vinnie Paul style cover. Maybe: Now Vinny Got Something To Die For :P
@mdmcbausson75398 жыл бұрын
Even Josh has said how difficult Vinnie's sound and style is to replicate, but that's an awesome idea nontheless.

@hallamalla988 жыл бұрын
Josh Steffen Yeah I saw it, this was before you uploaded it though but anyways it was a petty good cover, would like to see more in that style. Or in the style of Bill Ward! :)

People are saying: “This doesn’t fit” “This wasn’t supposed to fit” “Joey and Lars have their own places” But to be honest, I think this is better than whatever the two could’ve written
@ianperry95987 жыл бұрын
This is why I love Lars work on Justice. It just fits so well. This version just doesn’t work because it’s too much, which is the point of the video. Great job!

I have listened to this song a 100 times and always felt it was missing something. I know what it was now and its probably why I became a Slayer fan. Well done Josh!
