I really liked how they handled WoL's decision on how to approach the final duel with Zenos, whom is a divisive antagonist to begin with. 3rd answer for the people who just hate him, and Zenos loves it because that's what he was trying to do all along; rile you up. 2nd answer for people who just don't care about him, and he's happy to finally be worthy of your attention. "That, I cannot deny," is WoL accepting Zenos and understanding what drives him, and matching it in turn. All 3 choices are perfectly applicable and reasonable, and reflect the playerbase pretty well.
@dazzamcg23692 жыл бұрын
I chose "that I cannot deny" because the warrior of light is not just a champion of Eorzea or hydealeans champion. His an adventurer at heart who strives to seek greater challenges and testing himself against mightier foes so he himself can grow stronger to protect his comrades. That's why he understands Zenos as an equal, a mirror of himself. Zenos was the ultimate challenge for the warrior of light and in turn Zenos felt the same way about him/her. Why he was desperate to seek out the warrior of light. And that's why that answer was the only right choice for me. In the end they had the utmost respect for each other

I like how they used Emet and Zenos to parallel the final step of the Hero's Journey. In the intro of ARR, you are asked why do you want to be an adventurer. Because that is what you are. You chose this life to see new sights and encounter challenges you'd never meet otherwise. But then you joined the Scions and have gotten involved in plots and machinations. You crossed the threshold, became the Warrior of Light, unraveled the mysteries that govern this Star... Then at the End, you wonder what's next. And Emet calls you back to what drove you in the first place: Discovery. And Zenos reminds you of the thrill you had early in your journey: seeking out challenges for the fun of it and not because you needed too. This moment wasn't just a 4th Wall break, that is what your character was doing before joining the Scions. So with no threat of Rejoinings, no Elder Primals left, no Sound: you are no longer the Warrior of Light, but an adventurer. Free as the wind, free to explore the world for your own curiosity and find challenge because you want it, not because it is your duty.
@sniderealism24102 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: When asked that question back in ARR, you only had 4 options: Fame, Glory, Money, or stay silent. Meaning that WoL's first intentions probably was more shallow than "discovery for the sake of it", but it became that reason as the story went on.

@@sniderealism2410 It's more that those might have been the "expected" answers from a fresh adventurer. Also, you have the options wrong, since fame and glory are basically the same things. It's power, glory, money, or staying silent. One might feel that these are the answers that would have run through your character's head before they finally decided to keep their own counsel because they were either undecided, had a complex answer, or didn't feel like opening up to a stranger, however friendly. Even if you choose not to stay silent though, it doesn't mean that elements of the other answers aren't part of your reasons for becoming an adventurer, or even that one of the other answers doesn't intertwine with the others. Wanting power might involve wanting to be strong enough so that you can protect others, or even defend a particular cause, such as joining the Scions. Wanting glory might involve wanting to become known so that you can make a difference in the world, or help someone else do so, as we did with Alphinaud in particular. Wanting money might involve gaining the means to have enough influence to change something for the better, such as Godbert using at least part of his vast fortune for donations and to give people chances by employing them.

He is simple, and that simplicity is a welcome reprieve from the fantastically complex villain's other expansions have given us (not that im complaining about complex villans). Besides, he completely owned Jullus during the cutscene where he asked Zenos why? What does it matter why he did it? It is done and nothing you say or do, whether you cry and scream about how unfair it is or let anger and revenge consume you, will change it. Pick yourself up, pick a path, and start walking. The only person who can find meaning in your life is you yourself. For Zenos, his meaning is to fight the WoL and recapture the first time he felt true joy. And that's all he needs to be.

I see Zeno’s character as a reflection of those players who don’t care about the journey and only the destination. They don’t care about whoever’s toes they need to step on, they only care about beating the next tier of challenge, the next raid boss, the next thing that will give them purpose for continuing to play the game. They don’t look to the little things like just chatting with friends, exploring the world, meeting new people to share new experiences with, or just trying something new in general. They are so fixated on chasing the “high” of another challenge.

it's an old observation by now, but hey, I just got to this point. the beauty of Shinryu against Endsinger is that yeah, Shinryu is Zenos in all his combat-horny glory, but it is also Shinryu. a creature born of raw despair, anger, fear, and above all else the dying pleas of those who know they picked a fight they could not win. alone among primals, something wholly at home in Ultima Thule, at the end of all hopes. because at the end of all hopes there are two answers, and Metion took the easy one. somewhere inside Shinryu, Ilberd is cackling a last laugh of mad defiance. because yes. he has been outmatched. he will die, and all those he lead will die, and -he knew that going in-. endsinger says "you struggle in vain, you will not silence our song." and Shinryu answers "if you aren't lying, I can still die spiting you."

6:46:00 to answer why people like Zenos... its because... like all well written villains... he has a point you know. People make up whatever justification or rationalizing they want for the things they do... money, fame, power, happiness, fulfillment, excitement, and on and on, people want these things, and if you ask any individual person why they do it, odds are you will either get some poorly thought out answer like "because its fun" or such things, or perhaps if its something like money/fame/etc you may get an answer related to being able to go/do as they please... but to what end? to what end with all of it? Zenos as a character asks the question of "what is the purpose? what is it you do all these things for?" And all the side characters barely have an answer, if any answer at all. They have their morals and virtues and reasons for what they do in their own head, but most of it is based on cultural or ingrained beliefs or views they've grown up with, but that they've given little to no thought about it or what it actually means to them, WHY do they believe and think as they do, and seek the things they seek? Just like most people in the real world would barely have an answer if one at all. Zenos himself never found some great answer, and the only thing he found meaning in was combat that pushed his body and soul beyond their limits. its only through his interactions with the WoL that he finds there are true other answers to the question, and its why at the end he is no longer treating WoL like some rabid beast to hunt and fight with, but as a reflection or equal to himself, the same but opposite. But regardless, he becomes so warped in his own life, because no one else ever was able to answer the question that he was, "what is the purpose?" It was always trivial or trite garbage based on things even the people answering him couldnt really define or explain. Even in the CS at that point the guy hes talking to (forgot his name) cant honestly come up with an answer, because hes never thought about it before. And thats why people like him as a villain. good villains have a point to make. They're not just evil or stupid for the sake of it, theres a reason for it, intelligent though often irrational reasons behind their actions and views. And Zenos does fit that bill. Like him or not, he started out as a mediocre villain for a long time because his thought process wasnt laid out completely, but over time its been explain and explored better, and people have to actually think about how to answer his question. That is what makes a good, they pose a question that the player can reflect on themselves and how it relates to the real world. What is your purpose? Why do you do what you do? Why do you get up? Why do you go to work? Why do you play video games? Just to survive? To make an otherwise depressing existence of simply striving to continue "existing" somewhat tolerable by distracting yourself with tasty food or novelty games? Is that really any kind of meaningful or rational purpose? These are question that real life people should ask themselves, and its a question Zenos poses not just to the WoL, but to the player behind the screen as well. That.. is why people like him.

He's boring in the same sense that when you see someone that just doesn't wanna be at an event and is only there cause its mandatory is boring, of course they are, they're bored. Now imagine that event is Life itself. Zenos even points out if you ask someone why they live, they'll give what answer suits them. What makes Zenos so Tragic is the fact that while most people if say something important was happening like the APOCALYPSE, they'd be willing to drop say their Art career for the time being to help those in need. Zenos however is to a point he even sees that as the equivalent to "oh someone brought a bag of plastic cups to the potluck. yay" so for him the WoL is that first thing he has ever found enjoyment in. and anyone whos been anywhere they don't wanna be, can prolly attest. If you find something to do that you even remotely enjoy you'll go do that instead cause it beats being bored as hell

The reason I thoroughly enjoy Zenos as a character is because he genuinely views the WoL as a friend who is just too busy to "play" with him. It's sort of endearing. He never gets angry about it, he just keeps trying until he gets the rematch he's been waiting for.
@Mhantrax2 жыл бұрын
Yup, and another streamer seems to miss the point. That man is the only one who understands your struggle. Well, one of two people...He is only the second person in the entire game to actually ask you if you are fulfilled, found joy, or are being pressed by the burden of it all. The only other was Venat in Epis on the bridge between the buildings. If you listen to Venat during that sequence she talks about how getting to truly know people, understand them, accepts all about them, has opened up an understanding of a far deeper and fulfilling life, she transcended her, "banal and triviality," and found connection to something deeper in life. This was the genesis of her deep love and commitment for other human beings. It wasn't love only when they did what fits your narrow, trivial view of what's right, or good, but for all of humanity, including the ugliness. Zenos was trying to do the same. He understood that people are often times just zombies walking through life, accepting the smallness of it as fulfillment. The way I see it is this: Venat was a healthy version of someone sought this understanding. Zenos was a traumatized, scarred, incredibly flawed human being seeking the same. In the end, he found it. In his own way, he attached to you and in doing so, asked, and cared, about your journey. Even your friends, the scions, never truly check in on you in a deep, authentic manner that Venat and Zenos did. But it really is a perfect rendition of human being. this streamer, like almost all before her, lets the hate for the character blind her to a deeper understanding and acceptance in life. Had she a Taoist perspective, she wouldn't have judged with hate and malice, instead just taken in and learned what Zenos had to teach her. Which may have been one of the important lessons in the game.
@Tenkuu-san2 жыл бұрын
@@Mhantrax That is not even remotely true. The Scions regularly concern themselves with your wellbeing, and unlike Zenos, they see not only the burden of being a hero, but the loneliness of being the one who is protected at all costs as others sacrifice themselves for your sake. And please don't ever compare Zenos to Venat. Where Venat loved all life not in spite of their flaws but because they were a part of them, Zenos hated everything and everyone and saw them as worthless. He himself admits that his motives are selfish and petty and doesn't care to even try to be a better person. Even coming to Ultima Thule was a selfish action on his part, it had nothing to do with helping us.

@@Tenkuu-san but like - that's what person above said more or less. Zenos is quite literally like a WoL - that got raised in most fucked up place, with fucked up relationships and all. On top of that he was too sharp for his own sake, seeing a lot of negativity and... plainless of people. And that's a potential azem-like guy. Azem that thrills from new experience, eccentric people, adventure, exploration n shit. Seeing new stuff and all. For person that have similiar urges and interests (even if he didn't recognize them at a time) to be stuck for all his childhood in seclusion, with bad influence all around and most plain people that he saw trough without clear understanding of why they are wasting thier time like that and all. His relationships in family were bad pretty much from the start too, plus insanely talented, he didn't even experienced struggle before. Fights were the first thing that managed to grab him somewhat. Drag him from his boring pointless existence. Ah right, there also were dreams of fucking city burning and people dying all around him all the time. @@zenixvampirchik652 Sorry to be bursting any bubbles here, but Zenos would have been just another nobody had he not been born a prince. Likely not even a fighter sinced he learned that because of his heritage, and likely not an adventurer either since he's more of a stalker than someone who's actually interested in wandering the world. And pretty much the only reason he can even offer us a challenge by the end of Endwalker is his stolen Echo. It's actually the complete opposite of Azem, who we know cares about people and helps others out just because they can. Zenos simply doesn't have that interest in other people, nor for that matter in doing anything that he considers to be monotone. You can blame it partly on depression, sure, but sociopaths are also born, not made, and he is one. A tragic childhood doesn't excuse a violently criminal adulthood.

I seriously don't get this obsession with Azem. Yeah, you're the inheritor of an ancients will, get in line, so is everyone else. When I first made my character, he was a battle hungry warrior obsessed with finding stronger foes, but ended up growing as a person through the journey and ironically his rivalry with his dark reflection in Zenos, the person he very well would have been. After that was done, they intended to sacrifice newborn life to Zodiark to bring back the brethren they had sacrificed to create Zodiark. Venat and others disagreed with this and created Hydaelyn to keep Zodiark in check. Hydaelyn did that by sundering the world and Zodiark. Thus keeping Zodiark alive to keep the Final Days from happening once more but also too weak to fulfill the second goal of the Convocation through the sacrifice of future lives. And you think he's done NOTHING at this point!?!?! Like what are you expecting? A sob story that rivals Emet's? Or the body swap trick. It was obvious Zenos is trying to get the WoL to hate him. He's "THE BAD GUY". Sure he was going to kill the WoL's friends, but if he REALLY wanted to...Wouldn't you think he'd didn't take his merry ass time getting there? I think what makes Zenos nice to me is not anything like Emet or Elidibus. I like Zenos for the two reason that he is an established rival, which I am very much in love with, I always like those, and the fact that Zenos is also just a fun character. He doesn't provide much to the plot, I feel like-whether or not people like it-he is not suppose to contribute to the main plot, but to more of provide the player a nemesis. Emet was killed because he had to be, Elidibus was sealed to stop the sudden continuation of the Eight Calamity, Fandaniel forced your hand to kill him, while Zenos is gonna get killed for the sole reason that you want AND need to kill him, you wanna get rid of him, he is the one that continues to chase after you and you alone because he doesn't care about what's going on, because his story is with you, not the Ascians. He is certainly not amazing, no Emet or Elidibus level, not even Fordola level, but he's there because to be a personal villain. That, and he's also just funny unintentionally with how corny he can get with his goth poetry.
@eatherjourneyman83572 жыл бұрын
I’m not entirely sure how you came to the conclusion that zenos didn’t contribute much to the plot. Zenos is literally the reason that the vast majority of events in base storm blood happened. The only reason the empire wasn’t able to bomb eorzia into oblivion with black rose was because he killed his dad to end the project for good. Our actions on the first ensured black rose wouldn’t be a calamity but it sure as hell would have still won garlemald the war. Him enabling fandanal is the reason why endwalker happened at all. Zenos has been one of the strongest plot movers in the entire game by far
@Kikoou2 жыл бұрын
@@eatherjourneyman8357 Well, I kinda meant more like the fact that a lot of the things that happened are because of other people and Zenos is kinda just there being like "nope not happening" and that's it. He changed a lot, but the efforts to do so wasn't very much.

Zenos was a love-to-hate villain for me, I think. And I did hate him, like, a LOT. But I could also tell that this was very explicitly what he was there for in the story. Where nearly every major villain since HW was varying degrees of nuanced and sympathetic, and defeating them was always kinda sad, with Zenos I could just say, "You, sir, are a PROBLEM and have GOTTA GO." I don't think he's exactly just "evil for evil's sake"--I feel like something probably happened to him in his upbringing and/or Ascian-ificiation that turned him into this completely myopic hedonist who only likes one thing. I had a lot of questions about how he became what he is that this expac never fully answered (which actually makes me wonder if we'll see him again in the far future, or at least get further insight into his story). But whatever broke him, or even if it's innate, his life choices have been wholly abhorrent and it's easy to hand out his thrashing with a clear conscience.
@Wuffskers Жыл бұрын
Also like "fight-sexual" characters are often very fun. People who hate Zenos I often wonder if they've seen Hunter X Hunter and if they have what their opinions are of Hisoka because Hisoka is a very similar character tbh. One other thing I think characters like this do is their singular focus is able to undermine other more grandiose plots in really interesting ways. Zenos does this multiple times, we have this huge clash of Garlemald vs Eorzea and even though Zenos is technically on the garlemald side he could not actually care less about garlemald, he basically straight up says fuck countries fuck flags fuck allegiances. Similarly when he shows up at the end he is so utterly and completely unimpressed and indifferent to the endsinger, treated it as a mere nuisance. Even the embodiment of celestial existential despair doesn't mean shit to him. Things that motivate and affect normal people do not affect characters like zenos and so in spite of having a very singular understandable and relatively simple focus and motivation, characters like zenos actually become sort of agents of chaos because nothing else is sacred and who knows what they're gonna do. No "normal" person would gorge themselves on a ludicrous amount of aether to turn into a dragon and fly across space just to help his senpai so he can finally get the duel he wants, but Zenos's single-mindedness allows him to do these chaotic things where a more "reasonable" villain it wouldn't make sense.

I love how with those 3 simple answers you can see each player personal relationship with Zenos. The first option is for those of us that, deep down, understand his bloodlust, because... well... we are playing a game with a lot of combat, and we love combat, lets be sincere here, our only difference with Zenos (outside of FABOLOUS hair) is that we care about the world and the people, while he doesn't give a single fuck. The second option is for those that really dont understand the guy and dont care that much about him, but know that he must be stopped now or he will become a problem later. The third option is for those, like Shenpai that were TIRED of him and think that he overstayed his welcome way too much, for those who HATE the guy and NOW, finally, FINALLY can put him down for good. Good lord, I love this game.

@@deficit06 I chose option 3, but i broke down from his final speech because I've come to understand his joy and happiness, and why he yearned for it so much. In the end, ive come to like him and I see myself, a former Zenos hater, accept and truly become his friend-rivalry. I hope his final words are "i find it to be satisfying"
@ShujiMikami2 жыл бұрын
@@MenrvaS Being one-dimensional does not necessarily make a character bad. If anything, it helped elevate his character and give us such a satisfying conclusion. From the beginning, he was presented as a foil to the WoL, although SB only showed us that through the prism of his overwhelming bloodlust. But in reality, Zenos is someone who was born with the potential to be an adventure-seeker like us, yet was denied the chance to act upon it every step of the way. Born into royalty, shackled by the duty of a son of Garlemald, bereft of parental love and shunned as a monster. The only outlet he was afforded is that of combat, of hunting the savages for the glory of the Empire. And even when he eventually casts aside all that bound him and accepts the title of "viator"(traveler), he finds that there's nothing there left for him - no comrades to share victories with, no little things to enjoy, no big threats to test his might against. Save for you - a bridge of friendship that has been burned long before either of you were made aware of it. So, the only thing left for him is to push forward and burn the candle of his life once and for all - at the very least, it beats succumbing to despair and becoming a hollow shell. One thing I absolutely love about Zenos is how the authors made sure one could infer all that through what little screen time he was afforded. That final speech just helped recontextualize this aspect for those who haven't caught on early.
@ximakun2 жыл бұрын
I chose the third one myself because I really can’t stand him. Watching the playthrough again now I see how they made Venat and Zenos kind of opposites. Venat’s speech about understanding her call for adventure, her love for the world and its people and finding joy in the journey is the exact opposite of Zenos’ lack of purpose and meaning in life. In my head, the sequence of the Ragnarok coming home and being seen in the sky, in order for your ship to be seen in so many places, yall MFers must've circled the entire planet like 3 or 4 times trying to find a place to park in Old Sharlean. lol Alphinaud: There! Alisae: Ugh, damned pirates are parked there... Urianger: What about hither? Livingway: I don't think we'd fit... WOL: Okay.... TAKE HER AROUND AGEIN! Everyone: Ugggghhhhhhh.....

Warrior of Light was using a linkshell to coordinate the folks on the surface to take all the parking spots. They are just that stoked about being on a spaceship and don't want to get off of it.

The top comments aren't talking about it, but I absolutely recommend running the 89 dungeon with a trust in Scenario mode. There's quite a bit of commentary.

Zenos learned in the end. He accepted to help the Scions in exchange for a bridge to you, he respected his part of the bargain and quietly let you finish ypur stuff, and then he *asked* you for a duel, instead of controving some life or death situation to get ypur bloodlust up. He learned to accept that you and him may share bloodlust, but you have a whole lot more depth than he does. He sees life as boring, and you his only light, and he learned, in the end, to stop trying to coerce you into fighting. In the end, he even propose something mutual, in his eyes, the only thing he can give you, offer you, is a roaring challenge, and it is a gift in the sense that you can refuse. So yes, Zenos learned, and in fact it redeemed him to me in the end. Zenos is boring as fuck, he is Omega lite, because Omega had at least the desire to return home beneath his quest for power. But in his last moments, Zenos just... accepted that. He lamented that he could not bring more, but offered you the only thing he could. And while it's true that he desperztly wanted you to fight him, the fact that he went to the end of the universe for it and was ready to let you go without a fuss is, in my eyes, enough respect for me to respect him in turn.

I don't think I'd call it a _redemption_ but he clearly underwent an arc. It's not like people need to like it, or like him, but it is without a doubt a well written character.
@Contevent Жыл бұрын
@@pedroscoponi4905 Well I didn't meant redemption as morally clean, my bad for the misunderstanding. I meant it made his character interesting compared to what it was before, it made him well written, and not a one note villain with no other quality than being strong.

I gotta say. First I only realized after jumping through the video that it's 19 hours long. Second, after Hydaelyn, I got out after that cutscene and it all hit me like a freight train and I just started crying and was like "......She's dead?" I think that was honestly the most delayed emotional response I've ever had. Like holy shit. My brain was the epiphany of the Apple loading icon to the fact that she was dying. Then it loaded, and it loaded a freight train of emotion that hit me like a thermonuclear missile. Honestly I did not think they'd be able to one-up Shadowbringers, but they fucking did more than that, they knocked it out of the fucking park, like holy shit HOW?! LIKE 80% OF THE CUTSCENES MADE ME CRY! I don't cry easily, but that's one reason I love FFXIV, it breaks my emotional kneecaps and makes me cry with it's tremendously amazing story and characters, music and writing, voice acting and world building. I can't cry easily, buy I want to sometimes, and this game gives it to me, and not fake crying, real, raw, emotional crying. Also god damn, with G'raha being my favorite anything ever, seeing his sacrifice scene again destroyed me, far more than the first time I saw it as I was probably already processing so much when playing through it.

Ok, seeing this confirms something I speculated during my own playthrough. Azem's gender matches your own. As I played through with my female Miqote, Azem was always referred to as 'she/her', but here they're referred to as 'he/him', matching your character's gender.

I love how Elidibus tells us we can't do anything to change the future while in the past. Even though we just spent an entire expansion doing just that! Lol This is why G'Raha is the most powerful hero ever. He was able to change history.
@Shalltear773 Жыл бұрын
I don't know which situation it was with G'Raha as it's been a while since I've played FFXIV, but I can't help but wonder if it's with different circumstances since Elidibus recognizing you'd already visited Elpis from his perspective means that everything you did there had already been done even if it appeared otherwise.

9:58:43 - Yes, Shenpai. You can fly anywhere but not in the spacecraft area. Once you pass the door, your flying mount will automatically land on the ground & you’ll receive a notification that says something like “...your mount cannot fly here”
