something about these videos always helps get rid of my perfectionism anxiety on my own work - being able to see a writer i respect working on projects and having ups and downs and similar struggles, makes me feel hopeful that I can get better too, and i don't have to be so scared of revision!

That sounds like a great synopsis "After a near fatal accident Tovi unlocked the powers of death. Fleeing the ruins of her city for the oasis of the capital she discovers that the class war is ravaging the city. Adding more pressure everyone is after her powers." Maybe just add in a sentence that adds in something about the world/magic of the world. Also maybe the armoror is like the armoror of a hunting group or something and also knows or suspects that Tovi might have these powers but it's a legend that people with the powers if death come about every 1000 years or something like that.

I am currently revising a book that I plan to publish later this year. It'll be the first book of a trilogy, and the first book I ever publish. It's sort of an old project since I started writing it when I was eight and I'm now in my twenties! I think that the magic number is different for each stage. For the zero draft, it's just getting stuff on the page. For the first draft, I'm done when it's functional. this usually takes at least two runs through each scene (three if it's a new scene, as I often add a lot of new material in my first draft). I have yet to do a third draft and really finish a project, so I have no idea how many times that takes haha!!

I am finally getting back to RFI. Finished the readthrough and now I need to figure out how one does a second draft lol or how *I* do a second draft. Especially one I know is going to be a complete and utter overhaul 😅 Yay for you being back with Project Death! I finished Can't Spell Tea Without Treason by Rebecca Thorne. It was a nice and cozy read. About to start the sequel, A Pirate's Life for Tea. And I'm reading On Beauty by Zadie Smith. Will probably reread romancing the beat soon.

I'm reading Aristophanes Lysistrata and other plays a penguin classics books recently I've been reading more classical books and I've found them as interesting reads never in my life have, I thought that reading classical books can be good, but it is once you have the power to choose what you want to read, also I'm writing in fanfiction for right now as a good break from my novels since I'm not in the mood for novel writing and it's been a nice change! I hope that everybody has a good day or night whenever they are reading this!

I am currently working on a longer piece of fanfiction that was my Nanowrimo project. It's become much longer than I initially anticipated. But there are also some fanfic ship events coming up this spring for one of my fav fandoms, and I want to write for aaaall the prompts. The result is that I write one short fic for these future events per week, and once that's done I get to work on my long fic for the rest of the week. Sometimes these short fics take a long time, and sometimes they're done in a day. This week's "short" fic is still not done, despite all the words I got done during your streams. Maybe tomorrow, if a stream happens, I will actually finish it. I have an old project I really need to revisit soon. I did a reread some months ago where I took some notes, but I never ended up fixing the things. This would be my first real edit of that project, but it feels daunting to start. Maybe during camp in July.

When I am revising, I like to read through the entire manuscript and make mental notes on what feels like it isn't working, then I go back and start the reread again only this time I start to fix the problems as I go. I will then reread one more time after all of those issues have been handled. I am currently reading the books in the World of the White Rat series by T. Kingfisher. So far Swordheart has been my favorite, but the Wonder Engine was good too. I still have 3 more in the series to read.

Have you made a video discussing your recent outlining process that you used in NaNo? I was rewatching it your videos and was confused on your approach. Edit: Currently reading Belladonna by Adalyn Grace. I love her version of Death. He's so entertaining so far. Currently working on a short story about anxiety and outling a romance novel.

What a coincidence- I'm on draft five of my most 'complete' novel, too! I'm re-writing it right now, it's how I 'edit.' I basically have two windows open and just re-write everything, tweaking as I go. I have notes on my previous version I look at and add more scenes because I'm a chronic underwriter, lmao. And I don't really have a magic number of revisions- just until i think it's the best I can get it. I've never gotten to that part of the process though- I've never queried any of my stories.

Woohoo!! I love revision, it’s my favorite phase of writing, especially the deeper you go 🤩 I think that’s why I’ve taken to essays and poetry so much in the last year, because I can get out of the initial messy drafts and into the phase where things are actually coming together so much faster! ALSO-I’m currently reading Lud-in-the-Mist by Hope Mirrlees, a classic fantasy novel from the 1920s (pre-tolkien!). It’s super fun and enchanting. I think folks who like Tolkien’s writing style, particularly in The Hobbit, would like it a lot, and it could be great to pick up if you’re interested in the evolution of modern fantasy writing.

I found all my resource materials and rough draft from 2016. Good place to start, The story grew a lot in my mind over the years so glad I waited. At that time, I didn't even know what an Image Moment was or Modes or even Foreshadowing or Pipeline Beats etc...and other narrative beats, then add in Genre Beats on top of that and mix in one of the 7 basic plots...lots of re-drafts I guess coming. It's enough to drive you crazy. You have to find the right genre for your story being each one has a philosophy to sell to the reader that promotes the theme etc. Planning is 50 percent of the battle or should I say time - LOL.

This month has been difficult, I'm dealing with pregnancy brain which is also screwing with my dyslexia, so I'll be in the middle of a thought completely forget what I was going for and then having to decipher since the letters and words are dancing. Also, the first 10 days of the month were kind of a wash because there's a very annoying stomach/lung infection burning through the schools at the moment, and the stomach bug was compounded by morning sickness. I'm trying desperately to finish the 1st draft of an Age Gap romance. I started it it in September/October since it was invasive, but also not something I've been able to outline. I'm heading towards the end. I've been doing a lot of reread on my scenes since the no outline thing. I'm also editing the rough draft of b2 in my soap series, and I realized I have a plot hole. I may put it down until Camp in April, but I don't know yet. I keep a notebook for when I have random story ideas. I started using page flags so I can add to the ideas as they come.

I've really enjoyed watching the evolution of this project and seeing you stick with it, set it aside, retackle it, reevaluate it, and ultimately stick with your goal of querying it. I'm currently working on first revision of last novel that I finished in Dec (the bulk written during Nano 22) but she's a slow go right now, given other commitments. And since I'm writing fiction, I'm reading non-fic, mostly travel stuff (cause I'm dreaming about this summer's trip to Iceland).
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh Жыл бұрын
Ahh, I’m so glad to hear that! It helps me tune out the criticism that says I should’ve been done by now somehow. 😂 Slow and steady is the way to do it! Especially with other commitments and life happening. And I’ve never been to Iceland but have always wanted to go, omg!! I hope you enjoy it!!! That will be so much fun.

💜 Okay, so what's your method for moving from handwritten notes to revision? I have piles of notes on paper that are just thoughts I've had. Now, I'm trying to revise and I'm overwhelmed by the notes I made. I don't know how to make them actionable. The only thing I can think to do is type them all into a document and then start color coding or grouping somehow...Tips?
@KateCavanaugh
@KateCavanaugh Жыл бұрын
I totally understand this struggle!! Half my handwritten notes are brain dumps just to reach the conclusions, so I can ignore most of what I wrote and just put the important things in the document. But I go through and circle all of those moments, then put them in/around the corresponding scenes. Sometimes I won’t totally know WHERE, but I’ll know which Act or which Beat, so I’ll put the note there and wait until I’m rewriting to find the right spot and actually implement it.

On a 2nd watch. Your issue, 2mins (ish) in, brought Sanderson's second law to mind. Also I'm surprised in your log-line you don't mention 'names can be traded with Death.' In your various vlogs you often mention this idea. At a loss on my current piece, I'm checking over my first self-published novel. On the downside, how much I feel needs correcting. On the upside how much I still enjoy the story. So errors of technique rather than plot. Magic number? No, I always lose count and we go back over it again.

I like to think of morality like this: Everyone has their own moral compas, some people get their morals from their parents or their society, from what laws there are or from their religion, some people have morals that tell them to do good in the world and some have morals that let them justify doing bad things. But it's always important to remember if you are trying to do what you think is good or right because of your fear of damnation, then your not as morally upright as you think you are. Because "good people" don't need a reason to be good, and "bad people" don't need to justify being bad to do bad things. People might think they are good people and justify their hate, discrimination, and prejudice based off of their morals. (Exame someone justifying their hare of minority because their parents hated minoritys or hating queer people because 'the Bible says men should not lie with men') People might think they are bad people and justify donating to a charity or helping a friend in need off of their own morals. (Example this person maybe believes they are bad because they were a drunk driver who killed someone In a motor accident and now donate money to the cherity, Mothers Against Drunk Driving or someone who justify themselves dealing drugs because they let their friends sleep in their apartment when they are between houses and is always looking out for the people they love and care about.) I can't/shouldn't and have no interest in judging these people based off of my morals, because everyone has their own moral compas to lead them.
