I know it's a small thing but I love when he hits a wrong note on the piano, towards the beginning of the song, smiles and moves on with, possibly, more focus. Life long performers always seem to rise above any mistake while they're performing. So cool

Said Collins: "That song was written during my first divorce. My first wife and the kids had gone and I was left there. The song was written out of experience as opposed to a 'what if' song. If that personal stuff had not happened to me at the time, I probably would never have made an album, and if I was to have made an album eventually, it probably would have been a jazz/rock thing. Without that stuff I wouldn't have felt the stuff I felt sitting at a piano night after night, day after day writing stuff." peace out

Against All Odds was written, composed and performed by Phil for the movie of the same name. It looks like this performance was from Live Aid on 7/13/85. The concert was held at Wembly Stadium in England and at RFK Stadium in Philly yo help raise money for the Ethiopian famine. Phil performed in BOTH countries that day by flying from London to Philly. Queen’s performance at this concert is regarded by many as the greatest live set in rock history. It’s great that you appreciate singer/songwriters. You need to hear some early Genesis with Phil. 🔥

I remember this. It’s a shame that Live Aid never had a complete video filming. Some of it’s been lost. I was in my late twenties at this point. This song won the Oscar for the film of the same title. I saw the live concert shortly after. I’ve seen him twice, both in the 80s. His shows were always incredible to see.

This performance is from the Live Aid concert in 1985. He was the only performer to play live at both places on different sides of the globe on the same day. Phil Collins played this song, and then a few with Sting at Wembley Stadium in England, then jumped on an SST jet to Philadelphia, where the other half of the concert was being performed. He arrived in time to play with Eric Clapton, and just for kicks, sat in on drums with Led Zeppelin for their set. Also being a huge fan of Tool, you should know that the members of that band were influenced by Genesis (Phil's band). You should listen to the studio version of Mama, by Genesis. In my opinion, it is one of Phil's best vocal performances. It will give you chills. You fell down the wide rabbit hole with Tool, and it is just as wide with the band Genesis. Both with Peter Gabriel as the lead singer, then Phil. I enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work.

@Dante, wow!! Thanks for that Info man. Phil had to fly to different Continents in the same day 🌍🌎. I never knew that he "sub'd" 🥁 for Led Zeppelin👍. The respect level just went up a few more levels for Phil 🐐🙂😎, not many left...🙂 Your *Tool* analogy, 🤔💭👍🎶🎵. Mine would be; 🐐of🏀. Without Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, many more, etc... We probably wouldn't have any Michael Jordans, Lebron James, Kobe (RIP😢), Steph Curry, many others, etc....

He sang with Genesis since 1970 thru the 90s, so you are right, his voice can carry over a rock band, but still sound so good. He is pitch perfect and has impeccable timing. His emotion is so, so well felt. (oh, and he played leading roles is a couple movies too!)

He was originally just the drummer of Genesis, but when the original lead singer, Peter Gabriel, yes, the guy that sings "Sledgehammer" with the crazy music video that played 47 times a day on Mtv back when it first came out in May of 1986 when i was 12...i definitely remember it well. When Genesis started auditioning new lead singers, Phil would sing and teach the songs to the prospective singers, and when no one really seemed right for the band, they more and more started to realize that their new lead singer had been their old drummer the whole time lol. So Phil actually did an "audition" and they all decided he was the best fit and that's history. Best decision they ever made. I think Phil is better than Peter Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis all day. Peter is great as a solo artist as well, obviously, he had great success. Phil is a great, legendary solo artist as well, and Mike Rutherford, with his "side project" did pretty great as well, that would be Mike and the Mechanics. The whole band oozes freaking talent from all sides.

His rendition of 'Always' by Irving Berlin is luscious. He and Amy Keys (and separately with several other beautiful female singers) do a memorable 'Separate Lives' by Steven Bishop. And of course his versions of 'A Groovy Kind of Love' (The Mindbenders) and 'You Can't Hurry Love' (The Supremes). But yes, Collins is a prolific song writer with most of his material by himself. "Blood On the Rooftops' is amazing (co-wrote with Steve Hackett)

great reaction! You nailed it on songwriting. Ive seen Phil solo and with Genesis 20+ times from 1978 to 1994. I have avoided this song for 17 years for the reason you mentioned: it's a sad song. The line "There's just a memory of your face" digs too deep from a breakup with my soul mate in 2007. We burned bright for a short time. But my career kept me away for 300 days or more a year. It was my calling to do that job. I chose to stay with my calling rather than doing local runs in SoCal. I'm still paying the emotional price of that decision..but it did not diminish the rewards of my career choice. Sometimes, you may be a handful of people who can do something great that other people could never do..and you rise to the top - you only gotta give up a wife at home waiting with a drink for you, family and all the other things that normal people have. And when it's over and you can no longer do it, it's over...and you live with that choice made 17 years ago. If it wasn't for the joy in watching people like yourself discover this music, I couldn't listen to this song. Thank you for the smile my friend.

You should watch the end of the movie, he wrote this song for it, and he caught every nuance of the girl watching Jeff Bridges leave, it made me hold my breath. He would have gotten the Oscar for it, but he went on a talk show and got cocky about how he was a shoo in...right before everyone voted, and they smacked his nose by voting for another song. Best movie song scene ever. Still gives me chills.

Check him out with Peter Gabriel, when they were Genesis, before both branched out on their own. Both have ridiculous amounts of talent. This song from the movie with same name, was perfect for the film, but also reflected how he felt when he marriage was breaking down. The song gives us butterflies in our stomachs because of the sense of urgency that it emulates. That’s Phil Collins. The genius.

This song MADE the movie. The lyrics here are so good they resonate, but when you watch the movie and hear the lyrics the movie became more powerful and meaningful. Movie title: AGAINST ALL ODDS.

So many great songs to checkout, some of my favourites are: It's In Your Eyes, Sledgehammer (edit this one is Peter Gabriel lol sorry). An artist that I associate alot with Phil is Peter Gabriel, (Probably because they were both singers in Genesis at one point.) A great song from Peter Gabriel is Solsbury Hill, it has very poetic lyrics.
