When Phil Collins was young he played the drums for Muddy Waters at the Chicago blues festival and played the drums for Eric Clapton in the 1980 at one of Eric’s concerts This man was just God given talent He could play instruments and had a great and unique voice and some of the best song writing skills on the planet

Phil Collins was a true musician. He understands the music he writes, tone, pitch, melody, and harmony down to the notes on the page. He plays multiple instruments and wasn't a 1 trick pony. He wrote some of the best songs I've heard outside of my love of hard rock/heavy metal.

Said Collins: "That song was written during my first divorce. My first wife and the kids had gone and I was left there. The song was written out of experience as opposed to a 'what if' song. If that personal stuff had not happened to me at the time, I probably would never have made an album, and if I was to have made an album eventually, it probably would have been a jazz/rock thing. Without that stuff I wouldn't have felt the stuff I felt sitting at a piano night after night, day after day writing stuff." peace out

Against All Odds was written, composed and performed by Phil for the movie of the same name. It looks like this performance was from Live Aid on 7/13/85. The concert was held at Wembly Stadium in England and at RFK Stadium in Philly yo help raise money for the Ethiopian famine. Phil performed in BOTH countries that day by flying from London to Philly. Queen’s performance at this concert is regarded by many as the greatest live set in rock history. It’s great that you appreciate singer/songwriters. You need to hear some early Genesis with Phil. 🔥

I remember this. It’s a shame that Live Aid never had a complete video filming. Some of it’s been lost. I was in my late twenties at this point. This song won the Oscar for the film of the same title. I saw the live concert shortly after. I’ve seen him twice, both in the 80s. His shows were always incredible to see.
@dantedrago76482 жыл бұрын
This performance is from the Live Aid concert in 1985. He was the only performer to play live at both places on different sides of the globe on the same day. Phil Collins played this song, and then a few with Sting at Wembley Stadium in England, then jumped on an SST jet to Philadelphia, where the other half of the concert was being performed. He arrived in time to play with Eric Clapton, and just for kicks, sat in on drums with Led Zeppelin for their set. Also being a huge fan of Tool, you should know that the members of that band were influenced by Genesis (Phil's band). You should listen to the studio version of Mama, by Genesis. In my opinion, it is one of Phil's best vocal performances. It will give you chills. You fell down the wide rabbit hole with Tool, and it is just as wide with the band Genesis. Both with Peter Gabriel as the lead singer, then Phil. I enjoy your reactions. Keep up the good work.

He was originally just the drummer of Genesis, but when the original lead singer, Peter Gabriel, yes, the guy that sings "Sledgehammer" with the crazy music video that played 47 times a day on Mtv back when it first came out in May of 1986 when i was 12...i definitely remember it well. When Genesis started auditioning new lead singers, Phil would sing and teach the songs to the prospective singers, and when no one really seemed right for the band, they more and more started to realize that their new lead singer had been their old drummer the whole time lol. So Phil actually did an "audition" and they all decided he was the best fit and that's history. Best decision they ever made. I think Phil is better than Peter Gabriel as the lead singer of Genesis all day. Peter is great as a solo artist as well, obviously, he had great success. Phil is a great, legendary solo artist as well, and Mike Rutherford, with his "side project" did pretty great as well, that would be Mike and the Mechanics. The whole band oozes freaking talent from all sides.

His rendition of 'Always' by Irving Berlin is luscious. He and Amy Keys (and separately with several other beautiful female singers) do a memorable 'Separate Lives' by Steven Bishop. And of course his versions of 'A Groovy Kind of Love' (The Mindbenders) and 'You Can't Hurry Love' (The Supremes). But yes, Collins is a prolific song writer with most of his material by himself. "Blood On the Rooftops' is amazing (co-wrote with Steve Hackett)
