Gary was 22 years old when Procol Harum first did this song in 1967, and had a good voice then. He was 61 in this performance and was in great voice. Gary took care of the pipes as he aged. This is the best performance of this masterpiece that will ever be done. Gary may be gone now, but he will always live on through his music.

Gary Brooker, the lead singer, unfortunately passed away last year. This song is originally from the 60's by this band. It's so wonderful to hear it fully fleshed out with the orchestra.

Desolate, no doubt. Music is exactly what we all need. Now more than ever. I find it kind of ironic the music which really helped us survive the turmoil of the ‘60’s and ‘70’s has come to the surface again, because it was that good. Times may change but people are people. I love the virtual interplay between U.S. and Brit artists of that time - building upon each other's work, swapping ideas etc. The Brit invasion of the States played a great part in bringing the blues back to the U.S public to whom it had for the most part been considered "race music". Beatles, Stones, Animals ..... many of the greatest British bands had learned much from the black artists and re-interpreted it. That's how I (a teenager then here in Australia) got introduced to them and developed a love of blues music. I'm 71 now and still love that music and the 60s stuff that led me to it

I was 12 years old when this song released, 1967. It shook me then and continues to do so, today. I think the organ piece is one of the most beautiful pieces ever written. It never fails to give me gooseflesh! There is nothing like the sound of the Hammond Organ. The lead singer, Gary Brooker, was 22 years old when this song released and was 61 at the time of this video. He passed away in 2022. His voice was one-of-a-kind and instantly recognizable. I watch this video, and I can smell the dust and pine of our old barn, all the instruments, mike stands, amps, drums. I can hear the boys coming in to play, laughing and jostling each other. I was youngest, and the only girl, so, I was excluded for years, until they found out I could sing. By then, the era was almost over, and wives, jobs, children, adulting came along. A lot was wrong back then, but the music was always right.

Btw, this song was one of John Lennon’s all time fav songs! He had a regular 45 record player (yes, turntable, needle and all!) installed in his car so he could listen to records while being driven around. He used to routinely put on this song, “Whiter Shade of Pale”, and instruct his driver to turn up the volume all the way, and repeatedly play this song, while they drove around and around, with all of the windows down! He loved it! Honestly, I used to do the very same thing any time that song came on the radio….i would turn it up to full volume, roll down all of the windows, and circle around wherever I was until the song was over (I did not have a record player in my car like John did, so I could not repeat it, but I did this automatically, without thinking about it, and way before I found out John did the same thing I was doing, only repeated, and with a record player, which I didn’t have, but I did have some serious great car speakers!! ❤ Also, I saw the singer of the group, Procol Harum, this guy, “live”, with Ringo and his All Starr Band in Berkeley, CA, near the UC Berkeley campus! It was magical! He played and sang this song, and he was excellent! He sounded just like the record! Awesome! I will never forget it!! ❤

First time I heard this song was 1982 I was 16 then and i was driving my brother to work and would go back and pick him up after his shift was over at 11pm. I remember so well asking him that day what was the name of this song, I can remember the road and town.He was born in 1959 and passed on Mother’s Day 2020 from cancer. Every time I hear this song I think of him, I love you Randy.
