Great analysis. Just a note: Dylan recorded this in August, 1963, before Kennedy was assassinated. So he was prescient - ahead of the ramping up in Vietnam.

I don’t know that “We” should put Dylan on such a “prophet pedestal” - give Robert Zimmerman the grace to just be a Human among us. …..still, having said that - I have the utmost respect for him to have the sheer audacity to speak the Truth (at least his perception of) regardless of what he (and All of us, really) were Taught ! “Never ask questions ?”……DUCK FAT !! I’m a U.S. Army Vet - using creative expression (through singing) to address a lifetime of Trauma. Participating in VA Music Therapy programs & singing at Open Mics….. I GOTTA get this song down & start singing it loud & clear when I perform. Kinda seems “We” weren’t listening so good back in ‘63 - and History repeats itself again & again…. Unless we WAKE UP…..and change our future.

most interesting discussion and reminded of the year and context. Excellent most people don't really get the emotions that his songs created. I first heard him in "62 > '63 singing blowing in the wind. and WOW. There was Dylan and there was everybody else. Have you heard "lonesome death of Hattie Carrol"? Good work. Thank you for helping people to see really look at his songs. That's why he won the "Nobel" prize.

The Judas Iscariot line is what inspired Webber and Rice to write the rock opera, Jesus Christ Superstar. To me, Dylan is the greatest writer ever in the English language... no, Shakespeare does not even come close. I also consider him the greatest western singer too... not the greatest voice, but the greatest singer, because singing is all about conveying emotions... and no one does it better than Bob. We are lucky that this transcendent genius keeps a-chuggin' along.

Have you ever read Shakespeare, or Dickens, or Steinbeck, etc.
@girishv.b70705 ай бұрын
@nedludd7622 Sadly, I had to study Shakespeare... one play every grade from 8 to 11... Kalidasa wipes him up every time. Dickens was a total racist who recommended the killing of every Hindu in India. He did have some good stories, though. I tried reading Steinbeck... too boring for me. I love Oscar Wilde... and Russian literature.

Gee Carice, hate to interrupt your meal. Had you ever heard this song before? Doesn't sound like it. This is one of the most powerful songs in my lifetime, and meaningful, and unfortunately timeless. (B1951), please consider the un-said other side, too many people are concerned about God being on their side, when the commandments are the other way, for us to be on God's side. (apologies and thanks to Arlo Guthrie)
