Andalusian yearling on the lunge for the first time

Diablo our Andalusian horse has been with us a week and he has started his training on the lunge.

Oh Tara... I just can’t believe how well developed he is for a yearling. If I had to guess I’d never think he was that young. He is going to be one great looking horse under saddle. Love your confidence in the manage with him. He will soon realize that as long as you are there is is perfectly safe. I do believe that he is going to learn fast and show you what a good choice you’ve made in him.

I see a sweet yearling speaking horse language and a human trying to communicate using human language. Out of kindness that equines exhibit, he is actually trying to manage. I am glad, at least, that Tara seems to want to help him and be kind. However, horses are herd animals and they communicate with horse language. Humans will get farther if they learn to teach using horse language. Right now, you are depending on the kindness of your yearling to reach out to understand you. He will miss half of his education which could be dangerous as he grows older. I wish you all the best. Edited to add...this is what I am talking about. Diablo is learning manners around the humans. Lol! Like all young geldings and especially colts, they tend to be pushy. A little like unruly teenage boys! Everything is a huge game including lunging. Diablo is picking it up well he is an intelligent horse. I like your training methods Tara, firm but kind.

Oh so funny watching have a roll in the sand, just a baby...then head down and bum in the air!! Great to have short lunging time, gets him listening to you and understanding your words. So beneficial for handling on the ground and putting everything in place for the future. Love your matter of fact approach with your horses. It's when you are weak and indecisive that people get issues with their horses

Short and sweet...that’s what is best. Without manners any young horse will become a bully and possibly dangerous when grown. It is vital they learn who is in charge, which makes for a good relationship all around. He is doing very well! 🥕🐴❤️

I think Diablo did really well for his first time on the lunge line. I loved seeing him trotting around the paddock looking happy. I can’t wait to see what he is like with some company. Loved that rolling! 😊 I have always heard that when a horse rolls all the way over, it indicates that he is an excellent horse! Don't know if there's any truth in that, but he does seem to be such an intelligent horse! He reminds me of my filly, Dixie...she just wanted to be close to me for scratches and snuggles! I was spending the night with my aunt and cousins when she (Dixie) was born, so she was 3 days old before I could see her...I spent all day with her. By the end of the day, she could be at the bottom of the pasture with her momma (Lady), and when I called her, she would leave her momma and come running to me...at just 3 days old! I miss her so much. I am so happy you put out these videos, it gives me so much joy to watch! 😊

Good day, Tara! What a magnificent boy Diablo is! He is absolutely stunning to watch. I love hearing your confident and reassuring voice as you introduce him to your commands. He is very intelligent and eager to please you. He reminds me of my now two year old German Shepherd, in that he tries to push you to see how much he can get away with at first. You are so skilled and know you cannot give him an inch, lest he will take a mile. There are so many similarities between horse training and dog training, it is amazing! Tara, this little chestnut colt is smart as a whip and onery as all get out! He doesn't miss a trick, and suddenly has become extremely confident in himself! He is a handful, and will continue to be, but ultimately may prove to be the best horse that you have ever had. Hang in there...

Diablo is a delightful yearling, although seems quite a bit older. He’s a really clever young man & seems to be very quick on the uptake! Diablo has come such a long way in the matter of days. To me, I read it as a sign of trust when a youngster is willing to roll so close to a human. I remember him rolling next to you in the paddock not long after he first arrived too. But it's great that you are setting boundaries with him, good manners are essential. I hope that he enjoyed his first Birthday and that Lovely Bella is also feeling at home too. They will soon be whinnying with a Yorkshire Accent, Tara :-)

... and so it begins, the formal training. This is one of the many things I enjoy about your videos. All that patient, positive reinforcement ("good boy") and naming what he is doing: walk, trot, canter, so he gets used to the words. Sweet to see Diablo follow your instructions and to roll. Tara, if Diablo had been with you from birth, at what age would you have started this lunge training? Or is 1 year old the perfect time? Or maybe it varies from horse to horse. I love how spunky he is. I think he learns quickly. Improvements from first to last lunge showing already. 🤗

You don't want to do much lunge work when they are young as it can strain the legs. A little 5 minute session like this is perfect. I had a 5 month old who we noticed was developing poor body carriage - head up, back hollow, not pushing from the hind legs. We actually put him in a biting rig with loose side reins attached to his halter as a form of physical therapy. Two short walk trot sessions and he started moving correctly. His muscles developed properly after that.

What a gorgeous colt. He is doing very well when you consider that he just left his momma a week before these two training episodes in the menage . He has come a long way. He is going to be a handful as most colts his age are, but I don't see meanness in him, only spirit. (limited perspective as it is) That's a good thing, as long as he knows you are the leader ... you will set the ground rules firmly and he will conform after testing you. That's the game he is playing. Loved that he had a good old roll when he first hit the sand. Thanks for bringing us along for this adventure.

Well that got him fizzy lol he did good for first time he definitely needs ground manners, personally I do it after he's been out not fresh out the stable for a while, but you do exactly how I do it as long as feet are moving and you can tell him so he learns the words good job he looks stunning

Love to see horses roll around , he's very excitable and confident and pushy like a teenager but he's a quick learner, he has a sweet soul but once horses get excitable or try to release pressure they can kick whether in play or not the hard part is preempting it and it only comes with many years of experience like yourself have than us green folk it's great how you explain to us novices of what is happening and what should be expected from the horse. !🐎💛

Horses are like cats, always ITCHY! Especially in the face/head :) Oh Diablo is so adorable, he really wants to please you Tara. I think he's a quick learner, and it doesn't hurt that he's so darned cute! I hear an "oerff" as he trots around. The hand on the forehead, it's so precious I can't stand it! Really it's just like our cats, well just the one (Penelope oh! is her full name more on that some other time). I am sure he's in heaven there. He learns quickly, very willing, what a good boy, you have only good boys Tara! Has he and Bella tasted carrots? It's all so exciting :)

Nice job Tara! Diablo is certainly full of energy and could be a real handful with someone less experienced. When he is by himself he definitely does not look like a yearling. Next to Apollo or Farouk you can see he is still a youngster. Since green is my favorite color I appreciate you choosing it for the lunge line. 😁

What ever happened to Diablo? Did you trade him in for Bella. Not sure when you got each of your horses? I know you have Appolo, Faruke and Bella now but who did you get first, then second and then third? Diablo seems to be a lovely gelding and learning quickly. What happened to him and why don't you have him still?

Diablo turned out to be not as described and didn't fit in, so went back to the breeder

This is my own personal opinion, but I've found when my horses roll when they enter any arena, they work better! Not bad for a first time! So many words to learn!

Hi Tara I think you are doing very good with Diablo, he is gorgeous you will always get people that will criticise. You are very good with your Horses very kind and firm, Diablo has to learn, and you have lots of patience. He seems to learn very quickly. Good luck with him and Bella.
