Cellular Jail(Kala Pani)
The Cellular Jail on South Andaman Island, built during British rule in late 19th century, confined political prisoners. Its unique "Cellular" design allowed solitary confinement. Constructed using local materials by Indian and Burmese prisoners, it became a symbol of India's fight for independence after Japan's surrender in 1945.
The construction of the Cellular Jail was no easy feat. Thousands of laborers, primarily Indian and Burmese prisoners, were subjected to grueling work under harsh conditions. The entire structure was built using local materials, like red bricks and teak wood, which were transported from the Indian mainland.However, in 1945, Japan surrendered, marking the end of their occupation. The Cellular Jail, which had been a symbol of Indian resistance, was returned to India and eventually became a monument to the country's struggle for independence.
