Gillian is incredible in this role... There's a big difference between her Odette and her Odile. Her Odile looks really sad, desperate, pure, so kind and honest and when you see her Odile... is completely mad. She's so evilish, cynical, psychotic, manipulative and seductive at the same time. The way she looks at the public, the way she looks at the prince : she controlled them. Totally. The ending pose is incredible because you can see she knows that she 's winning. Gillian truly becomes her character along her interpretation, it gives me chills.

I would willingly sacrifice my soul on the altar of Gillian's timing in her 32 fouettes. I've seen some truly incredible Black Swans doing this coda but I have never seen timing so exquisite as Gillian's. Her precision is otherworldly.

I have watched this video a million times and never get tired of it. Gillian Murphy is truly phenomenal and beautiful. I love her portrayal of Odile, she looks so sinister. Her Odette portrayal is so pure and the exact opposite. Her strut out of the stage as Odile is also so whimsically breathtaking.

Yes. I agree, . Also, Gillian reminds me a lot of the great Alla Mikhalchenko, unforgettable. There is a video on youtube of the coda of her black swan, the tempo of the music is really fast and fabulous, I love it. Alla executes it perfectly, and leaves the audience amazed, a memorable performance, just like this one by Gillian. Alla and Gillian, are the few ballerinas that for me are considered really unique , and Sylvie Guillem 😉.

I've seen dozens of performances of Swan Lake, and I have to say that I've never seen such a perfect Odile. Gillian Murphy is , in my opinion, the best odile there is. her musicality is innate,the triple twists are simply safe and spectacular, exudes a magic that seduces and captivates, her variation is truly masterful. without a doubt, she is a dancer of an unsurpassed category. I'd say, she's kind of unique , a real jewel. I enjoy a lot watching her PERFECT variation. thanks for the video.

Yes,I've certainly watched a few videos of Julie Kent, and yes, she is actually, divine in white swan. actually, I've only seen her in Odette, not odile, but I'm sure she must be great, as always. we're talking of Julie Kent, one of the best dancers of America. She came to europe last summer 2015 but unfortunately I could not to her performance. but yes, she is with Darcey Bussell and Svetlana Zakharova, my 3 tops. :-)

All ballerina's interpretations of Odette/Odile are great, but after seeing at least 30 different performances by different dancers I have to say...Gillian's is my favorite. The contrast between her Odette and Odile is amazing and what makes it all the more incredible is that both characters feel genuine, she becomes them, she isn't just playing them.

Wo-o-ow...!!! How brilliant! I've been watching Joy Womack's channel and she's been preparing for Odile/Odette for the Kremlin Ballet and so I got hooked on watching this pas de deux by different performers. None of them looked as good as Joy in rehearsals and so I've seen countless ones over the last days. But finally...this one is STUNNING!! Wow!! So glad I kept on searching for a really good performance of this scene. Wow.

At 60 years old, i'm a retired school teacher and I know very little about ballet but I'm very musical and I've got good observation skills for what is good in dance. Like others I have watched lots of versions of the Black Swan pas de deux ....now I've never been a dancer, i've never followed Ballet and know very little about it… But even to me Gillian Murphy and this production stands out as head and shoulders above any others.her acting skills are phenomenal, and she just gets on with the dance. I've seen a couple of versions by Russian dancers were they stop every couple of minutes for applause from the audience, and take repeated bows.... To me that just destroys the flow of the ballet. But as I have endless free time I am indulging my ballet passion by watching everything educational I can on KZbin and reading "Apollo's Angels" A very lengthy and thorough history of classical balletwant to be able to spot a Vagnova Dancer from one trained in the Bournonville method in Denmark

I have also been watching a lot of ballet on KZbin and I agree with you, she is amazing! Not only her dancing, which is superb, but her acting. In interviews she comes across as the sweetest person, and this Odile is such a smooth sociopath, completely enjoying the adoration she is inspiring, as she is completely aware that she is about to destroy his world!

I’ve watched dozens of Odiles. Gillian Murphy is the only ballerina who doesn’t become Odile for the black swan act, but IS Odile for that part. She captures the character and is the most credible black swan for this act. The only ballerinas that I’ve seen having a perception close to that are Marie-Claude Pietragalla and Oksana Skorik. Her performance is incredible. It should be shown to any girl ambitioning to be a ballerina.

Her Odile is just mesmerizing! I can absolutely understand why the prince is so pulled to her! honestly, some strange part of me wishes for a "Bad Ending" so to speak! Where Rothbart and Odile DON"T expose themselves after this triumph and Siegfried marries Odile. it would be a tragic ending, especially for Odette, but the prince as well! he would live a life of happiness while unknowingly being a puppet king. because he truly believes he was successful in "Saving the Swan Queen" it would feed into his own ego which would make him easy for Odile to control! unaware that instead, he has betrayed her condemning her to swan form! a very happy end for Rothbart and Odile built on Odette's despair! (I imagine Rothbart would justify his status to Siegfried's mother as "Odette's father" by insisting the curse, was just a simple father-daughter 'spat' over her marriage that sprung out of control, but thankfully her son's love "Broke the curse!")

So, I'm an instrumentalist, not a dancer.. I just came here because I saw a video about the physics of a turn :P. Can some one explain to me what you guys mean exactly when you say Gillian has really good "musicality"?

Lauren Bennett: In ballets (especially in classical ones like Swan Lake) all movements have counts that they must be performed on. (In general, the execution of the proper movements at the proper time is "musicality".) Properly executed fouettés depend a lot on your center of gravity, and the extending part of the turn is often what helps keep the center properly aligned so you can complete more turns. Thus, the majority of people, especially when they must complete more fouettés, whip whenever they feel themselves falling. Gillian is skilled enough that her extension on the turn is on the exact count (the horns), which insanely difficult during fouettés (because of the whole falling over thing). Watch a couple of other videos and you will see than not all others' fouettés are as exactly on the horns/counts as her's.
