I just viewed your video after discovering that the hinges had failed on our 3000 series door. I had our door installed almost ten years ago, but from the door misalignment issues beginning at least a year ago. My question to Andersen is," What have they done to improve this design if it a common failure?". I will be calling them tomorrow to order the z-bar kit. @@beachtroll8344 so when I removed the existing z-bar I found that the rod holding the hinges in place had only slid down causing the upper hinge to come loose from the z-bar. I was able to repair by putting the hinge back and pushing the rod back through the hinge. Success! With new screws and a little spit and polish, the door opens and shuts easily. Thanks again!

I put the z bar on the door first, with the door closed mounted the outside screws, then the inside screws. Had to file the zbar a little to get better alignment with preexisting holes.

Thanks for giving me the confidence to take the hinge panel off. My problem was that the frame has became crooked, about 1/4 in narrower at the top than the bottom, making the door stick closed at the top. I just cut and took out some of the shim board the builder put in. But I never really got that bloody trim strip back in properly.

Thank you for sharing your storm door repair of the zbar hinges. I purchased an Andersen storm door from Habitat for Humanity ReStore. Everything worked properly when I looked at it but when I got home and started getting it ready to paint it I discovered one hinge was broken. I did not want to purchase a whole other zbar and searched how to repair and replace the broken hinge. I ended up using the hinge pin from another Andersen zbar and clamping down on the old hinge zbar to close the gap. I saw one video where the bushing of the hinge pin was manipulated to get the pin out but I couldn't do that. It didn't work for me. I realized how the hinge pin was put in and figured out I could pop it out by pushing in on one end to release the spring from the pin in the zbar. (Similar to a watch wristband pin) Easier to fix than to search how to fix it on the web.

I had the same issue after a number of emails and phone calls they finally replaced the z rail at no cost as its covered under warranty. Not sure the aggravation was worth saving the cost of purchasing it directly but hopefully if your having the issue you can get it replaced for free. Good luck

I was able to repair mine. My screen had 3 hinges and had no manufacturing info on it that I could find. I took 16 penny nails, cut off the heads and used the shafts as a replacement rods for the hinge. To keep the penny's shaft from falling down the tube, I put a self tapping screw about 3/4" down from each hinge to act as a bump stop. I put half of the nail shaft in the top of the hinge and super glued it in place. To insert the hinge, I slid the glued nail shaft in place while the bottom nail shaft was slid up inside the hinge. Once in place, gravity forced the bottom nail shaft to fall and stop on the artificial bump stop. Works incredibly well.

The design weakness seems to be the plastic flange bushings that wear and crack over time. On our 20-year-old door, the bushings on the top hinge deteriorated and the misalignment caused the bottom of the door to bind. My first thought was to just replace the bushings. The size is 0.325" OD, with 3/16" a pin hole. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find a stainless part with an outside diameter that precisely matches the size of the plastic ones. As others have mentioned, a free replacement hinge rail can be obtained by calling the customer service number (have door serial number handy). They asked me to provide photos of the door and purchase receipt. If you don't have an old receipt (who does), then a bill or document that proves residence prior to the time the door was made will suffice. Andersen could save a lot in warranty parts if they would replace those plastic bushings with stainless steel, as that is the only part that wears out.

Just an FYI, Andersen has a lifetime warranty on the Z Bar (Hinge Rail) for the 3000 and 4000 series doors. If you are the original owner (heck, even if you aren't), you can still call them up at the number on their website and provide the serial number of your door. I just called today and they are shipping one for my 5 1/2 year-old 3000 Door. I've already replaced the closures not knowing they were covered for the first 5 years.

I skimmed thru this video,, my hinges can be replaced separately. I used an allen wrench as a tool ,, to push the spring pin inside down, so that the hinge can pop out. Not sure if yours is made the same.. My door came with the house.

I didn’t attach the Z-Bar to the door. It was easier for me (less weight) attaching the Z-Bar to the frame so I didn’t struggle with the weight of the door. Whatever is easier for you. Good luck!

I've got 40 year-old storm doors with the same problem. I'm going to go back to wooden storm doors when I'm ready for the project, but what i did to keep the old doors working until I was ready to get rid of all that metal crap was to cut out the hinges from the stupid sidebars and put in $2 hinges and then caulk my cutouts. This was 2 years ago and it's still working perfectly. My house is a hundred years old. This metal storm door sht redudes your door width. If you treat the old wooden jamb with wood hardener and then apply a good oil-based primer, the old, original method is far, far better.

I just installed my second replacement Z-Bar (it also had different hinge spacing) and it was a MAJOR pain in the ass lining the hinges up to make sure the door closed properly / hit the striker plate. All I have left is that damn strip on the outside but that can wait until another day.

I can't seem to get the door to close. The two strips of weather stripping on the inside of the z-bar prevent the door from closing. It is like when you get something stuck between the jamb and a door, and the door will not close. I triple checked everything. I don't think that I did anything wrong. The holes for the hinges from last time should work...

Can you just replace the hinges and not the Z-bar? The Z-bar assembly is a whopping $70 but a whole new door is $120. i feel like they should sell just the hinges for $5 a pop

I found out after I replaced mine, that Andersen warranties the Z-Bar for life....Contact the company and they’ll send a replacement at no charge.

Anderson has a lifetime warranty on this part. If you call them up and give them your door serial number they will send the part to you for free. At least they did for me.

You should not have to pay for it. Has a lifetime warranty. Just got mine delivered for free.

I feel your pain also. Everytime I turn around and fix something there is two other things that just broke and need fixing. This year it seems to be doors. I had issues earlier this summer with my garage door sticking.

Tina, your post cracked me up. And you are so right; everything is crap and it's so bad that with some things you cannot buy a good quality part or fixture or door or whatever, at *any* price! Very frustrating. But it sounds like you're the type who continues to persevere, so that's great!

Take the whole door down and attach the zip bar with door off then put up the door and screw it in

My door had same problem, called and they sent me a new one but rep had mentioned a different door model piano style.. I told him that was wrong z bar, but he said sending the correct hinge free. I called when wrong one arrived and tried to order correct one again.. But, expected to get it free like the other. I was told that because door did not wear out and was due to some force that the door z bar Correct 4 hinge would be sent with a charge. I told them broke hinge that is several were rusted out and then any thing they saw in picture I sent was after. I sent picture to ID door since my lable was removed or feeled off door for model number. I went on line and many people said they were not given the free forever replacement part as advertised. In the end door is still not repaired. I am writing to the corporate offices to complain. They said they do not want the piano hinge returned.? Stupid. Never by from them again. Also someone wants ed $275. to install the z bar. Just what you did without the cut, The new bar would be $65. You are correct but may include shipping.? That is over $300. To put in a zbar? I don_t think I paid that much. Someone else would charge $500, for a new door and install. But not same quality door I have. Disgusted. Larson door z bar available in Walmart.

That’s unbelievable....So much for customer service!...I would call them back and ask to speak to a supervisor, and explain the problem to him/her....If the supervisor (get name) is not helpful, explain that you’re going to make a complaint with the Better Business Bureau....The BBB is usually pretty good at getting a resolution...Good luck!
