Great video, but if you've got a storm door or security door that isn't as bad as this one, you can just use a helper or a prybar to life the door and insert a 1/4" E-clip at the bottom of each hinge. A few cents and a few seconds. A few drops of oil is a good idea too.

Thank You for giving me an idea. I fixed mine little bit different, I used: Muzata 40Pack Cable Railing Kit Protective Protector Sleeves Grommet for Wood Posts for 1/8" 5/32" 3/16" Wire Rope T316 Stainless Steel CR88 and some 5/16" stainless steel washers. Surprisingly CR88 fit perfectly in place of cheap plastic sleeves ( I had higher expectations from brand like Anderson...). $16 worth of parts, some adjustments and my door opens properly again. Thank You for sharing your fix!

Great Job on explaining and showing in detail how to perform your "fix"! One could argue the time you spent making a brass spacer vs spending the $60 for the new hinge rail, but they also would have to weigh in that the rest of the door is still old and other parts will most likely fail too. Thanks also for pointing out the Brass/Lead chemical components - Nice to know you not only want to help people fix things inexpensively themselves, but you also care for their safety and health. Excellent video!
@SaveMoneyTV2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words, I appreciate it. The rest of the door is in great shape with the hinge rail being the only concern so far, so I feel good about the time spent vs. savings ratio. Time definitely has to factor into the equation when determining the "value" of a fix. Thanks for watching, all the best!

Andersen storm doors have a lifetime warranty (as long as you registered your initial purchase). Our latch gave out after 12 years, they sent me a replacement no charge, no argument. Now starting to have hinge trouble, so will check with them on getting a replacement Z strip.

Awesome video , I was just wondering , if I can use a regular nut , will that work thanks
@SaveMoneyTV2 жыл бұрын
I use the brass because it is a little softer and as much as possible you want the nut to take the wear and tear rather than the hinge. Also, it's a good idea to oil the nut and hinge regularly. Again, by decreasing wear on the hinge, it will extend the life of the rail, and the repair. Good luck!

You may be able to find them on Amazon. Also check a local Habitat for Humanity Building Restore as they may have the whole unit, or something you could strip down for parts.

No way to just buy a replacement hinge? Thanks for sharing your fix.
@SaveMoneyTV2 жыл бұрын
Yes, but the new hinge rail was $60 (Canadian Dollars). I'll probably need to buy one eventually, but this should at least double it's life. Keep oiling it and it should extend it's life even further. Thanks for watching!
@glenleslie8140Ай бұрын
if you get the exact measurements of the hinge length on your door and the diameter and length of the guts from your door, there are multiple hinges "like" these hinges on Amazon. No one names this brand of storm door by name with replacement hinges (as of Aug 2024) but several look similar. I would guess that the reason this company started selling the entire "hinge rail" (pre-mounted hinges with an entire 80 inch strip of metal they sit in) is because over time they changed vendors for the hinges and guts and had slightly different hinge sizes and this way a) they charge you 3x to 4x what just the hinges themselves would cost and b) it covers up the slight changes in size over time.
@glenleslie8140Ай бұрын
p.s. the part (at least for my Emco/Anderson storm door) is now $US89 on the Andersen website.

Is it possible if you put too large of a spacer that the door will be too high ?
@SaveMoneyTV9 күн бұрын
It's hard to say without seeing the door in question, but theoretically the spacer should just return the door to the height where it hung originally. But, I suppose it could depend on how much wear has occured, and where the wear has occured.
@glenleslie8140Ай бұрын
is there any reason you can't just use multiple steel washers of a desirable diameter instead of the brass nut?

I suspect I'm out of my depth there, but I was wondering why use these brass acorn nuts when you will cut them down, removing the acorn part? Just that they provide more material to work with?
@SaveMoneyTV2 жыл бұрын
I used the acorn nuts because of the extra thickness. Each repair will need a different amount of shimming and the acorn nut gives you plenty to work with. I used brass because it is softer than steel so it won't wear the aluminum hinges as quickly (hopefully). Keep them well oiled to prevent additional wear and tear.
@patriciar4427 Жыл бұрын
Isn't there a way to replace that hinge without having to remove the whole door? My center hinge pin has totally fallen out (bought the house that way). If I remove the top hinge and center hinge, is there a way to just replace the pin? Sorry..... I am a senior gal and that much work is too much for me :(

I know this video is a couple years old but I felt compelled to comment. If you're going to grind the top off of the acorn nut anyway why not just start with a regular nut instead of an acorn a nut? I've done similar mods myself many times. I've used a nut or a couple of thick washers to use as bushings. But I don't understand why you had to start with acorn nuts.
@SaveMoneyTV Жыл бұрын
Hi Bill, that's a great point. Another type of nut and/or washers will work too. I used the acorn nut because I wanted brass, and it was an easy to find brass nut that was in stock at any local hardware store and also the perfect diameter. Thanks for watching!
@gailteuschler76722 жыл бұрын
can a storm door be replaced using the same frame and just replacing the storm door itself?
@SaveMoneyTV2 жыл бұрын
Hard to know if they would be compatible without seeing them. Is the hinge spacing the same? Most doors come with the frame and if this is the case, then using the manufactured frame would ensure the best hanging of the door.

Why use acorn nuts when your gonna grind off the acorn
@SaveMoneyTV Жыл бұрын
Good question. I prefer the brass because it's softer, and the acorn nut has extra depth so you can customize it's finished thickness; which will be different for each hinge repair. Don't forget to oil the repaired hinge a few times per year to prevent wear. Thanks for watching!
