Handball offenses are not a simple thing. Before when it was a case of establishing whether it was a voluntary handball or not, and it was much more open to diferent interpretation. As it currently stands, where a punishable handball is only when the hand is streched outside the silhouette of the player, its much easier to establish when it warrants a penalty or not, and its far less open to different interpretations. I guess it all depends on what fans really want... perdonally, i would not want these sort of handballs lead to penaltie decisions, but that will also lead to far more inconsistent decisions and open to different interpretations.

Oliver's job is to apply the current rules of Football in his decisions, and he did so perfectly. And Andersen is lying when he says that similar instances have not been awarded with penalties in Premiership... only in the last season I recall plenty of them given, eg: Romero hand ball on very close proximity during the game Arsenal - Totenham. In fact, 1 of the 4 penalties Andersen's Crystal Palace got in the leagues last season, was exactly a close proximity handball offense with Andersen and other Palace players seen appealing to the referee for a penalty to be given to Palace... figure the hypocrisy!

Football without VAR never had so many disallowed goals and controversial off-side or handball decisions in the past .Football had a set rules until someone in FIFA decide to missinterpted the rules .You don't see none of this bullshit in other ball games ,everybody knows what is to be in offside position ,past defensive line before you receive the ball ,that is a reason we got linesman on the side to decide .Those marginal calls few cm in offside are joke . If he watched the prem he would know there were lots of these decisions at the start of the season and then the referee’s changed how strict the rules were. But then there was still odd inconsistencies and the rules were different in the Champions League which is a European tournament like this, so to compare it to the prem is a moot point.

Main issue is that the punishment (a pen, which is a huge match changing moment) doesn’t fit the crime (hand ball that has only just brushed an atom within the geezers finger). + no one on the pitch, in the stadium, on earth watching appealed for it. @@synlion thanks for your comment, I disagree because whilst defenders can consciously do that, it mostly applies in a 1v1 situation, in an event of a cross or a shot where theres a bit of frantic pin ball in the box & the ball changes direction/speed/height within a fractions of seconds, a defender can have every intention of defending arms behind their back and still incur a handball. The basic premise of needing players to defend with hands behind their backs also slingshots common sense out of the window, setting aside the elements of acceleration, turning and jumping it impacts in crucial situations, just considering the need to do that in a football match conveys the parody in which the game is descending into.

@@JackieG717 the problem is that with basically any other version of the rule, it’s up to interpretation about the intention of the defender. sure, defending in the box, with your arms behind your back, is a limitation that hinders natural movement to some extent, but it’s a relatively easy and straight forward solution that, in my eyes, is worth the tradeoff of not incurring game changing penalties. the game isn’t made a parody, just because it has technology that can actually prove when rule infractions occur. but what would you propose the rule to be changed to? no penalties unless there’s clear intent to defend with your hand?

And secondly, regarding the offside, I mean you literally don't seem to have grasped my point. It's about zoom and perspective. At a different zoom level, the offside cannot be determined. The vast majority of football people again feel this decision is unfair. The margins are too small. The defender does not deserve to be rewarded with playing offside to a 1cm level. The rule again was different in the past. Most people now see the inherent unfairness in it because VAR allows us to see more clearly. If we argued years ago, you would try and defend a different rule if offside to me and your argument would be the same " a rule is a rule". You're boring.
