just came back to this out of nostalgia. this is a great movie. i was an 18 year old re-enactor when this was filmed and you can see me in that huge brawl scene. they filmed it all day, and brought men from Fort Bragg to get in the middle of it. I was smart enough to stay away from them, and up at the top area of that scene we're just wrestling with people. but that middle part - those are Fort Bragg Army soldiers and they were brawling.

As a fun-fact, the ringleaders of the Raiders, after they were executed, were reported once the war was over. The terrible conditions of Camp Sumter ("Andersonville") warranted a cemetery to honor all those who had died in the camp, numbering roughly 13,000. To make an example of the Raiders' dishonor, the graves of the six ringleaders were ordered by the Union to be dug and placed far from the other graves at the site, and that no special attention be paid to these graves. Today, the six headstones of the Raiders ringleaders can be seen at Andersonville National Cemetery Rostrum. As ordered, the graves, to this day, have been paid little attention to, and rest far from the rest of the headstones. They have been weathered, chipped, and have rust-laden dirt embedded into the stone at the bases. They serve as a way to reflect on dishonor, desparation, and justice of those soldiers who would strike and take away from their fellow man in captivity.

They were actors, In reality the fight was preplanned not done when a new group came into camp. Wirz knew it was going to happen, it went down and I forget how many were killed. The hangings did not occur the day of the trial but later after Wirz grew tired of the raiders being locked up in a pen inside the prison.
@charlessaint7926 Жыл бұрын
Some tidbits, @3:06 there's a black Union soldier charging at the Raiders. About one hundred black soldiers were sent to Andersonville. There was hot debate between the Federal government and the Confederacy over the legitimacy of negro soldiers. The Confederate government declared that any black soldier, or their white officers, captured would be executed for inciting servile insurrection. Indeed many black soldiers would either be executed outright or returned to bondage. This was one of the main issues that broke down the exchange cartel. Black soldiers largely served in United States Colored Troops. As well as the famous 54th Massachusetts and the 1st Louisiana Native Guard. Those that arrived at Andersonville came from the battle of Olustee, Florida, in February 1864. About a third of the black soldiers at Andersonville died. Some that did survived became witnesses against Wirz at his post-war trial. Those black prisoners said their fellow white prisoners treated them as one of their own. Confederate General John Winder, in command of prisoner camps, gave authority to the prisoners to form their own police force to keep discipline inside the stockade. Called the Regulators, they searched for and arrested known Raiders. Those captured are then turned over to Wirz, who held them outside the prison until they could be brought to trial. The number of Raiders arrested varies depending on source, between 150-300. Like the movie later shows, six ringleaders are convicted of murder and hanged. The other Raiders received corporal punishment at the hands of their fellow prisoners. Later in the film, as the Raiders are led to the gallows, one of them tries to run. He's captured and brought back. This really did happen, as told by prisoner Michael Dougherty, 13th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Later his diary was turned into a book, "Michael Dougherty, Diary of a Civil War Hero.
