I was a manager and repairman in a Violin shop. We measured instrument specs down to a 1/10th of a millimeter using magnetic calipers because wood makes a massive difference in sound quality. Not only the type but rigidity and mass as well. Listen to a European orchestra with instruments that average 150 years old, made of very well cured wood, then compare that to an Asian orchestra that has new instruments made in China. The difference in the instrument tone is astounding. I'm on tour working with an orchestra in Taiwan for the fourth time as I write this. On an acoustic guitar, the wood clearly changes the sound, just between a cedar and spruce top, much less back, sides, and neck. The first important thing to understand is that from an acoustic string instrument, all of the sound comes from the strings vibrating the wood, moving the air in tandem with the variations in sound wave reflection produced through reflection, diffusion, and reverberation. This is undeniable science that's very easy to prove outside of opinionated internet amateurs. The second important thing to understand is that from an electric instrument, the sound comes from the disruption of a magnetic field, which mostly occurs through the vibration of the metallic, ferrous strings, though the wood still makes a huge difference in tone because it also disrupts the magnetic field through ancillary resonance. Again, very easy to prove. Also, the most important thing to understand is that literally, everything makes a tonal difference, from the wood to the cable length to the noise interference from stage lights to the altitude, temperature, and humidity of the physical location you are playing in. There's a tone of acoustic engineering science directly related to environmental effects of sound, notably high-frequency loss over distance as calculated specifically, built into all professional line array PA systems, and again very easy to scientifically prove. Put the most expensive pickups in a cigar box with a broomstick neck. Does it sound like a professional guitar? What happened? Does everything, including the strings, pickups, plectrum, wood, and environment, make a difference? Including the wood? Yes.
@frantisca7 жыл бұрын
Agreeing with you. I own a Les Paul for 45 years: without changind anything since 1973, it sounds different just by the aging of the wood. I am not sure most of the people commenting would hear a difference between a Stradivarius and a violin made in China. Anyway... I agree that the music instruments industry (19 billion/year) is manipulating a lot of hype around marketing gizmos that end up disturbing people's opinions about what should sound best...
@fableclub63197 жыл бұрын
I also agree with you! Besides, the music should always come first, from the heart, regardless of technology. Those are just tools we use to share our feelings with each other.

@howabouthetruth21577 жыл бұрын
Fable Club.........THANK YOU. That was the best "verbal explanation of scientific FACTS" concerning TONAL WOODS that I have ever read to date. As a guitarist ( electric AND acoustic ) since 1969, and playing guitar/harmonica & singing all at the same time professionally for nearly 2 decades in various rock/blues groups, and even solo or acoustic duets all over eastern central Florida spanning 3 large counties, I can say with absolute certainty, that tone wood DOES make a difference in WELL-MADE guitars. As a matter of fact, years ago, I learned to shop for my electric guitars by play-testing them UN-PLUGGED ONLY. ( You had me cheering when you said: "ANCILLARY RESONANCE" )........I found that the electric guitar that sings/resonates/sustains the most WHILE UN-PLUGGED, definitely do so head & shoulders over other test guitars unplugged. Electric guitars with this unplugged capability over others, also possess A VERY DEFINITIVE WARM & DISTINGUISHING TONE that the seasoned ear can hear with NO amplification whatsoever. Certain choices of pickups, amps, etc, even strings, will ENHANCE certain instruments. Newbies to this approach for "shopping for electric guitars" should be warned NOT to be fooled by simple "VIBRATION" often associated with poorly made instruments. I've picked up TERRIBLE sounding, poorly made electric guitars that were rather "loud" when played unplugged.........but only due to something simply vibrating, and those crappy/loud unplugged guitars had TERRIBLE tone, and did NOT naturally sustain for very long either. So anyone reading this who is new to this approach: LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NATURAL SWEET TONE/RESONANCE/SUSTAIN.........vs "VIBRATION" from a crappy guitar unplugged. Cheers. ................PS: ....and for all you tone deaf "techies" who still refuse to believe in tone woods.......why don't you try playing CLEAN, NON-DISTORTED TONES ON REALLY WELL-MADE GUITARS for once in your life, to "hopefully" discover what many folks like myself already know. I say "hopefully" because most if not all people who are tone deaf, will NEVER hear the differences in tonal woods anyway.
