There ya go; he has laid it all out for those who wish to hear. In order of importance: quality of composition, rhythm (feel), note choice, good instrument. If you check those four boxes, then just remember to keep it simple. Here is a man that embodies what a musician really is. Bravo Allen. And thank you Lee for a fantastic interview.

Very true regarding Allan Holdsworth. The slower parts of Allan's playing almost pull you out and captivate you. His outside playing and shredding keeps getting highlighted but the best of his music to me was: - his dynamic touch, including the whammy bar use - just amazing melodic chord progressions - the 'slow' parts of his music where it's almost like someone is singing - his guitar tone, which is a rabbit hole for many

Lee, Ted Greene is the Chord Chemist, the master of harmony, the better book is modern chord progressions, lesser-known but it's the practical companion to chord chemistry. Possibly the most important two-volume guitar book of the century.

Thank you, Anderstons! 42:50 the first time I came across this "pull string" technique was a Steve Via lesson of sorts. Steve was explaining to pull the string, then bend it. Almost a circular motion. IIRC, Steve was talking about how it was a true vibrato since the note goes flat/pitch/sharp. Anyway, it takes a bit practice but fun to do and cool effect when it fits. Cheers!

What a world. Rick Beato makes a video, talking about talking, and gets a million views. Allen Hinds plays some gorgeous bits and shares years of accumulated music wisdom, and 250 people watch. Like the Captain, I could listen to Allen Hinds "noodle" all night. There are a few others, too, like Eric Johnson and now, John Cordy. Everthing these guys play is beautiful. They just have something. And yeah, Hiram Bullock playing Cactus is a thrill.

Finally someone else who holds the pick the way I do… never broken a string either. Always felt way more tactile and adjustable between 3 points of contact, plus less drops. Makes chicken picking a nightmare but I can actually pick using either a thumb/first finger or thumb/middle finger grip if I have to so I think it’s added more than it’s taken away

What may be received as real creativity must still be accessible to a wide range of listeners and so must be based not on true originality, in a theoretical sense, but displays the player's response to what is heard and the feeling which accompanies that multi-faceted stimulus. A sense of connectivity tightening the relationship of the artist to the art and thereby drawing the listener into that exchange is the real connection between artist and listener. Never forget that the artist must continue listen while still engaged with the music. I remember hearing Jimi Hendrix within months of his death re-delivering his live set but not engaged in listening and only later realizing why his live playing (at that time) seemed to have died before he did.
