You guys should do a "pick your rig" blindfold challenge where Lee and Rob have to choose their favorite guitar, amp, and pedal out of a line up while blindfolded to make a rig.

Old amps/guitars vs new ones would be awesome as a blindfold challenge. People always talk about how "it's not as good as it used to be". So it would be interesting to see how that plays out when you can't see which is "new and improved" and which is vintage.
@ithemba
@ithemba 6 жыл бұрын
that most certainly is something interesting, but I tend to say thats something we'll never see on Andertons youtube channel - since they can not easily make a buying argument for them out of that. Nothing wrong with that, but all those hours of delightful entertainment serve as nothing but advertisement for a big internet music retail shop based in the UK - and as such they have far more stake in pushing the new ones that they actually can sell in the hundreds, instead of sending people onto the hunt down the rabbit hole for a 5150 mk1 or a plexi or whatnot.

The first example to come to my head is the Fender Bassman. In the 1960s, it was a guitar amp. Now, it is marketed as a bass amp. That said, is it simply the same amp? Will it still be every bit as good for guitar? That would make a great blindfold challenge.

@wildcatter63 I'm not talking about reissues and replicas. I'm talking about new things vs old things. Like actual new models of things that have evolved, not juts something that is trying to be the old one.

LOL, let's be nice and relieve El Capitans from the torture and instead inflict it on someone like Rob, Bea or even Pete. (Ah heck with it: ALL THREE!) I change my mind, include the Captain! But to keep it under a manageable length, use just 4 profiles with one being a fender. Also use amp sims that are supposed to be in the same category (like Fender Blues Junior and the Roland Blues Cube, etc.). Try use amp head sims so as to allow the use of just one cab. OR ye could just use the real things! 4 heads one cab. (Hehe, just thought of a twist: as the 5th test item, have the opposite playing. A real physical amp head with a set of 4 sims or a sim with a set of 4 physical heads. In either case, all using the same cab.)

All this shows is how important it is for you to be on-axis to hear the treble frequencies. The V40 was right behind him, and he's off-axis for the rest of them. Ideally the guinea pig should be in the centre of an arc where all of the amps are pointed directly at them, rather than the amps being pointed at the camera, and Lee off-center.
@niclastname
@niclastname 6 жыл бұрын
Not only that, but they're all behind them, when you're used to hearing an amp that you're at least somewhat facing. The shape of your ears makes a huge difference in how things sound coming from different angles. I wonder how these challenges would differ if the person playing were turned toward the amps.

Lee previously picked the Blues Cube as his favourite amp in a blind shootout. In this video, it's his least favourite. It shows how a lot of factors, such as where the amp is placed and how it's set makes a huge difference. I've got the Blues Cube Artist and I like it a lot, but it doesn't sound great if you're too far off axis, whereas my '65 Deluxe Reverb sounds pretty good no matter where you stand. I think these combo blindfold tests need to have all the amps in the same spot, which I know is a bit of a nightmare, logistically.

The one thing they didn't say was what type of Fender. During the vid I did think Lee was looking for a Black face sound. The HR Deluxe's normal channel is based on the Bassman. To be fair, the Victory probably sounds most like what Lee was looking for. :)

Don’t think Rob knew which input to plug into on the blues cube. The hi and lo inputs do make a difference to the sound. I also have never heard a blues cube sound that bad - even through the internet. In my experience each amp needs to be eq’d to get the best sound for the guitar going into it and for the ears listening to it! The cynic might say the blues cube was eq’d in a way that made it sound bad so that Lee would not choose it ‘..because it’s not a valve amp’ as Chappers was nearly too quick to observe. I think the whole valve non-valve thing needs to be put into context when listening through the internet. In my experience a valve amp generally is more about feel for the player - especially these days when power amps in none valve amps are much better than they used to be. Anyhoo - these are just my opinions, I’m sure others had theirs. Enjoyed the vid - keep doing more please.

The Blackstar doesn't have a solid-state preamp in it- there are tubes in the preamp and power amp- it's the overdrive and reverb that are solid state. It runs 2 EL34s in the power amp and 2 ECC83s in the preamp. I own one- I just don't use the od or the reverb- I run pedals. The only weak spot of the amp imo is the speaker- it's a 12" Celestion 70/80, if you can swing the upgrade to a 75 Cream back- you got a really great sounding, unbelievably heavy valve amp. I'm telling you- it's heavy as is, the 75 heavy magnet Cream Back makes it considerably worse. But man, it sounds good- crystal clear, well balanced, and takes gain really well. You will think you've lost some bottom end but if you pay attention, it's just tighter, more focused- not as flubby. It's there but it's not bleeding over the rest of your notes, so everything is coming through nice and clear. It's like adding a really light, really transparent compressor.

I must say that I have 1964 Princeton (6G2 model), know that "fender sound" and in the headphones the Morgan is too bright/tight, Fender neutral, Roland not so warm and bitty, V40 has that warm sound like my old Fender, Blackstar is totally different amp.

I have an idea for a blindfold video : blindfold Lee and give him various Les Pauls to play : genuine Gibsons, maybe an Epiphone or two, maybe a couple oddballs like an ESP/LTD or a Chapman, forbid him to touch the headstock or other parts that would give away what it is, and ask him to rank them in order of *quality* (not price), see what comes out ! should be interesting... "battle of the budgets ?" I said Lee, not Chappers, because he identifies Gibsons by bloody SMELL and also knows too well what ESPs, LTDs and his own brand feel like, so it's less fun.
@SG-wj2qj
@SG-wj2qj 5 жыл бұрын
Thats short of a loaded test... Your forbidding him from touching components that will dictate quality in order to hide the identity. I also noticed that Lee can't tell the difference between a Nitro & and a Poly finish by feel. Witch is huge when it comes to quality.

@@SG-wj2qj for me the only thing that counts is how solid the guitar feels. nitro finishes are okay, they look cool if you like finishes that ge but they're not as protective, poly finishes don't look as vintage but are much harder. That's secondary IMO. Is the guitar put together well ? that's what counts IMO. tone can be influenced by pickups, pedals, amp etc. You can't really modify the build quality.

@@wombat6 while yes the Nitro finish isn't as durable and ages differently. It still is a much more expensive finish to achieve, and has less a plasticy feel. If the cap can distinguish the feel of the finishes. He'd easily be able to feel the higher quality instrument....but again if he knows what he's feeling for. Feeling if guitar was put together well just of playing it without touching hardware....seems like a bit of stretch.

@@SG-wj2qj you're saying more expensive finish is synonymous of higher quality. I still completely disagree with that. To me, and to a LOT of people, a harder (more protective) finish is worth a lot more than one that is less protective.
@SG-wj2qj

@@wombat6 you disagree that a more expensive, labour intensive process is not synonymous with quality as apose to spray on plastic. Their are downsides to poly finishes as well, harder = more brittle. Digs that may dent a Nitro finish will often chip a Poly finish. They're also extremely difficult to blend and repair a Poly finish. But taking your logic, not to insult or question your choices, but if durability is the biggest concern. Does that make Devcon 2 ton Epoxy the best guitar finish? Since... It is the strongest clear coat on the market.

The PR12 is based on a Princeton. "The Morgan PR12 is based around the small American 12W combo from the 60’s." Hence, PR(Princeton Reverb)12. Had he picked it, I'd defend him until the end because the HRD is barely a Fender, and a Princeton Clone is much more of the Fender Sound. That said, he picked a Victory, which is a "do it all" style amp. At least he didn't pick the Blackstar. Idk, I just think that the choice of a HRD to represent the quintessential Fender Tone was a bit of a misstep. That said, these videos are awesome. Keep em coming!

Guys... Can you do a comparison of the best playing guitars based on thickness of the neck? I have huge hands and have found the thickness of the wylde audio "Warhammer & Odin" to have the thickest and most comfortable neck for me being a very large guy. But I just don't have the knowledge to test enough of them out. Thanks very much.

Chappers had it easy. When you think Marshall you tend to associate it with a sound like a JCM800, which they tried to replicate with the Jubilee 2550 head in the video. If they had chosen a DSL40 or one of the newer Origin series It would have been more difficult for Rob. The amps put up against the Jubilee sounded NOTHING like a Marshall, even to my comparatively untrained ears. Fenders have very different sounds depending on the era and the wattage. Also, making a clean tube amp sound Fenderish is relatively easy. Let's see Chappers try this challenge.

I had the same reaction when I shopped for a low wattage ultimate clean Fender type amp for recording. The Victory V40 Deluxe (which is 42 watts but can be dialled down to 7 watts) was by far the most Fendery (and the best) of all the amps I tried. So I bought one.

Rob would probably have said what each amp was along with the serial number and manufacture date. I feel a Twin/Deluxe Reverb or Blues Jr would have been a better representation for Fender though.

Great challenge avec le blindfold!! Keep it up! It would be nice to see a review on the fender '57 Custom Champ 5-watt. Also would be interesting for us to see at which volumes the amps are set when testing them since we hear it all the same on youtube, this way we can listen to how much gain is on the amp at a specific volume.
