Some of these sounds go as far back as the jv range. I had a jv1080 for years, and maxed it out with various expansion boards, including the excellent Vintage Synths board, which I'd buy again and put in a JD990 module some years later. I used those extensively for t.v. stuff. In essence, they've packed all of those sounds in and almost quadrupled the synthesis capabilities. They've also made it hands on & put in a useful arpeggiator/ sequencer. The only let down is the size of the keyboard, which is why the price feels a little bit high; we've got an abundance of choice at that price point for all manner of hard and software synth combos, so you end up comparing and contrasting easily. Overall, I love the sounds and the intelligent arp is good to get those creative juices flowing. If the jupiter X came out first or the street price on this was a tad lower, it would be a no brainer.

I'm already seeing the price on these second hand start to drop a bit. I just picked up the xm for $1100 second hand, basically still new fortunately. For that price I can roll with the little crap keyboard since it's set up on midi anyway. I can't get over how great some of these sounds are. Turns out I'm digging it wayyy more than I expected to! If we're being real, I definitely left a few trash-talking comments on some of the early vids of the xm, basically saying how it's nothing new from Roland. Truth is if you have a system 8 or something that came out recently, this unit is probably 90% the same. Still, the quality of the sounds and sheer breadth of sounds loaded into this thing is worth it to me.

The newer Roland emulations of their iconic synths are seriously legit, but it drives me insane that they can't put it in a decent package. The System-8 was already criticized for its price, and now they go MORE expensive instead of filling the gap between that and the Boutiques. I do think the Boutiques are more fairly priced for what you get, but 4-voice poly can get fucked to begin with.
@benbowland5 жыл бұрын
I mean, I think this is pretty fairly priced. It's a million synths in one, near unlimited polyphony, 5 parts so you can make some massive stacks, artificial intelligence arpeggiator, cord-optional so you can take it wherever, etc. Roland can be hit or miss but I think this is a definite hit. (And I don't know what you mean by "MORE expensive", since the Jupiter-XM is the same price as the System-8.)

Sadly the price is to high. For me 1000 bucks would be the limit for this mini keys digital synth. beside from this aspect Roland did a great job here. a ribbon controller like the asm hydrasynth has, would have been a killer feature here.
@BigBadWolf..............5 жыл бұрын
There is so much going for it but the price will ultimately limit its popularity in today’s market. Considering the minilogue xd, hydrasynth, and argon8 coming out at around the same time they actually might have made more money if they sold them at 1100 or 1000. Economies of scale would probably have sold them twice as many units. If they want to maximize profit then a module at 1100 would be a effective way to capitalize on the current market.
@floridahiker15035 жыл бұрын
If you had a synth with a minilogue, hydrasynth and argon in one it still wouldn't have as many internal synths as a jupiter xm so its like buying 6 synths in one.

@@floridahiker1503 Yes it's a serious piece of gear. The hydra is more flexible in terms of synthesis. The minilogue is analog and knob per function. "all of this should also be inside of that new $4000 Fantom." Exactly. That's sort of what Korg did with the Kronos. It's got a PolysixEX Legacy Analog Collection & MS20EX Legacy Analog Collection engines, as well as AL-1 Analog Synthesizer (analog modeling engine) & MOD-7 (FM synthesis, can load DX7 SYsEx patches) + strng modeling, (sample based) acoustic & electric pianos, & organs engines, and sampled based HD-1 engine. It also has Wave Sequencing (like the Wave Station) and Wave Shaping (from the O1/W) What peeves me about Roland is that it seems they haven't created any new samples in like 15 years. This Jupiter X, as well as the Jupiter 80, Integra 7, and FA-## all use sounds from the SRX/SR-JV boards, and XV5080. (which were awesome in the late 1990s-early 2000s, but are ridiculously outdated now) The most interesting thing I've seen on the Fantom is that instead of using sampled pianos, it uses a scaled down lite version of the Roland V-Piano. (but I haven't heard a demo of it yet)
@neonether4 жыл бұрын
Analog filters would have been more in the spirit of the Jupiter's era. In my mind, it doesn't necessarily have to be called a Jupiter anything...its basically a souped up system 8 with all the vintage glory accurately nailed and available with a just a few button pushes. Having the Jupiter theme is a cool touch in my home studio, but honestly with what it delivers I'd still have grabbed regardless of it's name and theme- of course providing it meets the same level of work flow functionality delivered here.

It sounds good but I can't understand how Roland became a software company. All products are emulations working on "engines" (what a beautiful name for just a piece of software). So you don't have the feeling to buy a synth but just a software. And now they are stacking "engines" in one box to create a "new" product. I feel sad because Roland was the maker of so much incredible synths and now, engineers and PCB have been replaced by developers... I have nothing against developers, I'm a developer myself... but when I play on a synth I don't want to feel like at my office... Please Roland, stop this "all digital" logic and make again some great synths. Since many years now you're just living on the old stock. Soon you will have no more to offer. Another XXX synths with the "engine" of the last engine-based XX itself including the "engine" of the Jupiter XM including "engines" of preceding computers (It's hard for me to call this a synth, sorry) ? Please, you made so great synths. I'm sure you can do it again.
@tyranic15 жыл бұрын
Well said, but it still a good synth, more so for new customers. The main thing for me is the filters, does it come alive when you tweak the cutoff and resonance. The majority of cases with digital synths they don't except from my experience the Hydrasynth. There's a vibe you get from great analogue that is hard to replicate digitally, and there's some digital sounds you can't do in analogue. We need both in our studio's. I have a JDXA and Minilogue XD and a Virus C, the best of both worlds. Love the I- arp for sparking idea's though.
@KNHSynths5 жыл бұрын
@@tyranic1 I agree, we need both type of synthesis, analog and digital. Digital by nature can be a good VST or a "fake" hardware synth, it is almost the same thing, but analog need analog machines (hardware). Both sounds are interesting and have their place in a mix. But Roland needs to create new analog synths. They are going the reverse way of every makers... even a pure software company like Arturia produce now analog hardware machines ! And Roland, the maker of the System 700, System 100, System 100m, Jupiter, Juno, 808, 909, TB303 ... perhaps the brand who made the greatest number of legend machines in the whole world ! Even more than Sequential, Oberheim or Moog ! This brand is turning its back on what did their name just to do what all others are doing, VST and boxed VST they call "digital synth". Computer with a software. I'm sad, really. Either they lose all their R&D capacity to create analog synth and it's the end of this maker, or they are just taking the wrong way. Sad in both cases.

Yes, there are great or new or rare synthesis methods out there, like additive, but when you factor in cost, ease of use, and sound design possibilities, it seems like the best ideas are already here. Synthesists are used to anticipating the next big thing, but I think that we, like pianists or guitarists, are entering an era where we need to shift our focus from the next big thing to what we can do with the tried-and-tested techniques that are already here. It looks cool, but considering it costs more than a Roland FA-08 but has a way less multi timbrality, no sequencer and no sampling those jupiter sounds would want to sound pretty spectacular compared to the SN / XV5080 PCM in the FA

Full size boards for 1500 are generally not Flagship boards. The only one I can think of is a DM12, which is less. This is like a small format Flagship synth.

@digitaldiezel58705 жыл бұрын
My previous comment was wrong! I should have pointed out that this synth is more comparable to the Prolouge , not the Minilouge. That’s why its more expensive. This IS A JUPITER X, in a smaller package 📦.
@digitaldiezel58705 жыл бұрын
Orlando Pergamo I agree. But thats the beautiful thing I don’t need the same sound as analog. I already have a Neutron and a Tempest which is a hybrid. My next synth needs to be flexible and cover all the bases. That will allow me to get more specialized synths in the future. For now I need flagship sounds in a small package for my meager home studio.

give me 48 keys and half the price. and a real sequencer. it's more of a 800 synth in todays market not a 1500 synth. give me a proper piano, b3 and vox. and 8 drawbars. then its a proper instrument not a toy.

I tried the Xm. The Filters sound great but the sound of the models behave like previous VAs from Roland especially if they have longer releases and playing repeated notes or chords you get a phasing or flanging effect like you can on any previous VA like the JP-8000, V-Synth, SH-201 and even the Sample playback Gaia SH-01 and Jupiter-80/50. I owned them all at one point. Too bad these do not offer one ACB model section. ACB found in Boutiques and System-8 is better at emulating the classic Roland Analogs. Too bad.
@funkmachine64204 жыл бұрын
I won't go so far as to say it sounds bad. But it doesn't sound particularly analog to me, which is what it seems to want to be. Personally I'd say less is more, rather see a single use synth well done than a master of none kind of situation.

@GreenHoleSun4 жыл бұрын
You are paying for the new sound engines, real portability (speakers and battery powered), new intelligent arpeggiator and sequencer and an operating system which is meant to be upgraded with new functions in the future since this is essentially a computer with DSP. Just wait a while they'll come down just like the system 8 & Prologue, this is way better than a 4 voice Boutique it has humongous polyphony 256 note to be exact how much would 64 Boutiques cost? that's how many you'd need to buy to have an equivalent amount of polyphony.

@georgegeorgio17515 жыл бұрын
@@tuneunleashed Well the Jup 80 was a much more expensive model at the time , I played the Jup 50 and wasn't impressed maybe the 80 has a bit more under the hood, and we haven't had anyone delve into the Jup X yet I think once clever programmers start doing patches for it you'll see it will be at least on par or better.
@tuneunleashed5 жыл бұрын
George Georgio Yes it does lol overall the Jupiter 80 is the best synth and most powerful synth in the Roland Jupiter HISTORY! It’s better than the Roland Jupiter 8 and better than the X. People don’t like the Jupiter 80 because it wasn’t analog which personally I don’t even care. I like both the key is to make music.
@tuneunleashed5 жыл бұрын
But since I’ve got a Montage 8 there is no use for a Jupiter 80 so therefore why not get a Jupiter X it’s better suited if you want a secondary board. It’s like the V-Synth, Fa-06 and all the 61 keys are meant for. Secondary boards and so as the Jupiter 80 even though it’s 76 keys good secondary board aswell

Meh, the mids are scooped and the top end is dull, it's got none of the buzz, crackle or bite that help a synth sit inside (or cut thru) a mix. Imho, for these kinds of classic, bread and butter Roland-y sounds, the Deepmind is a vastly sweeter-sounding and more flexible instrument.
@techinfusions5 жыл бұрын
@ $1500 you think "a good soft synth can do all of this for a fraction of the price" @$499 everyone would just buy one, come on Behringer whats next from you guys?

@techinfusions5 жыл бұрын
@@digitaldiezel5870 So why is the Jupiter XM $1500?
@digitaldiezel58705 жыл бұрын
Tech Infusion The Dm12 has 12 voices and maybe 2 parts using a split. It has lexicon fx and integrates well with your PC. It gets the job done. The Xm has 256 voices and has 5 parts (4 synth and 1 rhythm). The Xm also has an intelligent Arp and 5 classic synth engines that can be layered to make all new patches. Roland may also include more models in a future update. It’s also battery powered, has its own speakers, and Bluetooth midi. The sound & FX are the same as what’s found in the full sized Jupiter and the new Fantom workstation. Finally, a major plus for me is that it’s NOT a full sized synth. Personally I would not pay $1500 or more for a Behringer product but i would pay that much for a Roland product. I just haven’t done so since 2003. Imo Roland has taken steps to change that. The product is perfect for me but may not be perfect for all, which is why they have the JUPITER X coming next year. They have covered their bases imo. I love the Prophet X but it’s too rich for my blood, i still give that synth all the props in the world, its close to perfect, and its NOT too expensive, I just can’t afford it.

I'd want to get my hands on one before considering this synth - I'm leery because the JP-08 was sonically a big disappointment (only the Emu Proteus/1 disappointed me more). I don't mind the tiny faders but the JP-08 sounds like a cartoon of an analogue synth. Like the difference between a digital piano and the real thing - good enough for a laugh but doesn't fool anyone who can hear the difference.
